Prep & Voyager will be the heavy favorites for the title entering the year as most of their closest respective competitors from recent seasons have been severely weakened by graduation.

I'm sure we'll see some new teams rise up to put themselves in the hunt, but I'd be surprised if it's not those two in Chapel Hill when it comes down to it.

Voyager coach will be sending me info when he an son come back from Virginia visit. Prep will be heavy favorite but there are a few teams in the west who will push them for that birth to go to states.

I think Lincoln Charter will be on a mission this year. They have everybody back and are looking good from what I've been told

Hayesville has 10 seniors and 4 returning starters this year. I believe they only had 2 seniors last year. One of those 2 signed with North Georgia--so not easy to replace--but they will have a very deep and experienced team.

Lincoln Charter is another team that lost one of their best players but returns pretty much everything else from a good team. Their point guard (leading scorer and SPC player of the year) was a freshman, so I would expect them to be good for the next few years.

Avery County has three of their top four scorers back and has been to regionals the last two years, so I expect them to be good again.

Thanks for the info Observe and Report I know about Lincoln Charter I actually coached there top players on travel ball. I need someone from Avery to send me there info and Hayesville. I know Hayesville has the Zach Cottrell kid who just commited to app state. It's going to be a good year check out the preseason polls November 1st.

Cherokee lost a great pg but have Jason McMillian and a host of young kids that dominated youth league and middle school .. They had a Soph playas a fresh last year that will step up this year and a a jv kid that was unstoppable and is the qb on football team. Looking forward too both girks and boys this year both should be top 10

I like Lincoln Charter, Cherokee, and Prep as the favorites. I think Hayesville could be in the hunt. Sleeper team will be North Stanly and Albemarle. Albemarle could make a run depending on a couple of factors, North Stanly I expect to be a much improved team.

Cherokee plays hard and will be a tough out for anybody.

It will be tough for Cherokee to replace their PG...pretty much everything they did ran through him. I also hope they have some size coming up, because they graduated the only players over 6-0 on last year's team. However, if they can find a primary ball handler near as good as Johnson, they'll be dangerous against teams that allow them to dictate a frenetic tempo. Right now I would pick them second out of the SMC...but then again I picked them 3rd this time last year haha.

What are your predictions for the Cherokee girls team? They should be pretty tough again.

Kind of like the boys, they have the potential to be good but have to find a way to replace a point guard who was the catalyst for everything they did. Some of their better secondary players last year were freshmen, I believe, so if they can step their up and perform with bigger roles, Cherokee can be very good. But I would say Robbinsville is the favorite in the BSMC girls at this point.

Albemarle will be great in two years but now, North Stanly has received a few great transfers these two teams will definitely be solid sleepers.

Avery county should be in the hunt after returning most of their players. They have se great length on the perimeter for a school their size.

And for the SMC, I know everyone is picking Hayesville as winner probably with what they have returning. The two seniors they lost will hurt them more than what people think, I felt that the kid that went to north Georgia was a really solid player and could go through him to score at crucial times. Also with his scoring ability he took a lot off of Cortrell. The other boy was a great rebounder and a real hustler. I do not see Hayesville have any problems getting up and down the floor and scoring. I would say they will rotate a lot of players and put a lot of ball pressure. They do not have many holes but if I were to guess maybe rebounding? Don't know but excited to see them play.

Cherokee lost a lot in Johnson and a couple other of the kids. That will be hard to replace, but a very solid jv team that was on a whole nother level in the smc. I look for them to be down a little bit just mainly because of leadership. But with a good coach that will push the tempo and some good young guys, I look to see a team that will make some noise after Christmas.

But there's two teams that the SMC better look out for and that's Swain and Rosman.

Swain has pretty much everyone returning on a middle of the pack team from last year. The Shuler kid can play and when he gets going he gets going. Who's gonna help? The other good scorer they had from last year is back as well. I really like the way their two bigs play in Marr and Keyshawn I think his name is, I'm not sure. Those two with Shuler can really control the boards. But here's what is real intriguing is the new jv basketball coach Vince Bradley and his two sons. His oldest son Evan will be a junior and can really light up. He is a spot up shooter that will make you pay when left open. His youngest son zeke and after watching him play some before I feel that he is going to be something special the next couple years. He's only a freshman but got some good size on him and some really good footwork and good touch around the rim, he also can step out and shoot. I look for them to really surprise some teams this year.

Rosman returns their core group of guys. They really can put up some points and put them up quick. Stroup, Reese, and Thomas are capable of scoring 20+ on any given night. But what I hear is one player is ineligible and their best jv player has transferred. The Tesnow kid can play too and is a great defender and very physical, but can he stay healthy. Also green just broke his leg so is he going to get to play? So depending on depth I believe judges the Tigers. With their style of play it is good to have 8 or so guys that get a lot of play time. And their defense? Their defense was horrible last year. If they can seem to fix these two things I think the will have a very successful season.

We will have to agree to disagree. He is a good shooter descent defender and is some height. He is a pretty good baseball player as well. But he will help North with his shooting.
Where did you get him being a shooter from lol? This kid can not shoot! I went to every single game last year he had maybe two 3 pointers, and a total of 16 points on the season.

Then you know who he was behind last year. He didn't get a lot of PT last year playing behind who he was. I'm not nor did I say he was a game changer I'm saying he was a descent player that is a good shooter. At AHS he would have been in the rotation this year and would have been a descent role player.

51 pts on the year avg 38% from the field. From a percentage standpoint only 2 better one was at 34% and one at 42% from 3. He shot 33% from 3.

I agree that it will be tough to replace two 6-4ish starters, including one who was probably the second best scorer on the team. But I also think this year's team has the potential to be better than last year's because their personnel will fit their system more. If you look at the most successful teams under Coach Cottrell--2004 state champs and 2012 sectional champs--they had a bunch of seniors and the personnel for a lot of 4-guard lineups, which allowed them to force their tempo, pressure the ball on defense, and take care of the ball and create mismatches on offense. As talented as last year's group was, I think this year's team fits that M.O. better.

I think you mean a middle school team that was on another level for smc .. I heard today that the ms boys have won 33 straight games .. So the future is looking bright for cherokee

That's pretty impressive but middle school success doesn't always mean varsity success--sometimes it just shows who hit puberty first. Seen a lot of 6-0 kids with a mustache dominate the post in 8th grade then turn into average 6-0 high school guards 4 years later. If Cherokee's kids keep developing, physically and skill-wise, and stay focused, though, it sounds like you might have a special group coming up.
