The Smoky Mountain Conference was the only 1A Conference in the state last year that had a team to start and finish the season unbeaten as Robbinsville had the perfect season to remember....Fast forward to this year, and every conference in the West still has an Unbeaten team heading into this friday night with the exception of the Smoky Mountain Conference who had NO undefeated teams left by the time conference play began in late September of this year...Statewide, there are 6 unbeaten 1A teams remaining with only 1 left in the East(Southside), and the Seahawks will face a major challenge this coming friday to stay unbeaten when they travel to Beaufort to face a tough CPC foe in East Carteret.....

SPC-7
-----------
Pine Lake Prep's(8-0 & 3-0) memorable and historic season continued last friday as the Pride recorded thier 5th shutout(26-0) this season with their first victory over Bessemer City(2-6 & 1-2)....Meanwhile in Davidson, the Spartans(6-2 & 3-0) remained tied atop the SPC Standings with the Pride as CSOD knocked Thomas Jefferson(6-1 & 2-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 26-14 victory over the Gryphons....In Gastonia, Cherryville(1-7 & 1-1) ended a season of futility with a 39-7 victory at Highland Tech(0-7 & 0-3), sending the Rams to their 23rd straight defeat....In non-conference action last friday, Mountain Island Charter(3-5 & 1-4)beat (48-14) Hickory Grove Baptist Christian School....The Raptors are apparently finished with conference play, even though they haven't yet faced SPC foe Cherryville, and aren't scheduled to play the Ironmen this season in a strange scheduling setup in the SPC?.....

Looking Ahead: Pine Lake Prep will host Cherryville in the regular season home finale for the Pride, while CSOD will host Highland Tech....In the SPC Game of the Week, Thomas Jefferson will travel to Bessemer City, and attempt to do something they've yet to do, and that's beat the Yellowjackets for the first time.....Mountain Island Charter will continue their non-conference schedule when the Raptors host Greenville Christian....

1A/2A MVC-4
---------------------
East Wilkes memorable and historic season continued last friday as the Cardinals remained unbeaten(8-0 & 4-0) after a closely-contested 31-28 victory over 2A Ashe County(4-4 & 3-1) in which the Cardinals handed the Huskies their first MVC loss of the season, and now sit alone at the top of the MVC Standings....In Sparta, 2A Wilkes Central(7-1 & 3-1) kept their MVC title hopes alive with a 40-28 victory over 1A Alleghany(2-6 & 1-3)...In Boonville, 1A Starmount(5-3 & 3-1) also kept their MVC Title hopes in focus with a dominating 54-13 victory over visiting 2A North Wilkes(1-7 & 0-4), sending the 2A Vikings to their 6th straight defeat....Meanwhile over in Millers Creek, 2A West Wilkes(3-5 & 1-3) picked-up their first MVC victory with a hard fought 20-15 victory over 1A Elkin(1-7 & 1-3)....

Looking Ahead: A high playoff seed, and a possible MVC Title hangs in the balance when 1A foes East Wilkes and Starmount clash in Boonville this friday night in the MVC Game of the Week....In other MVC action, 2A MVC foes Ashe County and North Wilkes will face off in Hays, while 2A Wilkes Central will host 1A Elkin in another MVC matchup....In the regular season finale in Sparta, 1A Alleghany will host 2A West Wilkes....

1A/2A WHC-2
--------------------
In a game full of offensive fireworks, 1A Mitchell County(8-0 & 3-0) remained unbeaten in their pursuit of their first WHC Title since 2011 as the Mountaineers handed 2A Hendersonville(5-4 & 3-1) their first WHC loss with a 56-40 victory in Spruce Pine....In another high-scoring WHC game in Newland, 1A Avery County's(1-7 & 0-3) bid for an upset and WHC victory came up just a little short in a 43-41 loss to 2A Polk County(4-5 & 2-2)....Meanwhile, 2A Madison County(1-7 & 1-2) edged(15-14) 2A Owen(1-7 & 1-3) for the first time since 2012, and beat the Warhorses for the first time in Black Mountain as the Patriots ended an overall 11 game losing-streak with their first win of the season....

Looking Ahead: In the WHC Game of the Week this friday, 1A Mitchell County can take a giant step toward the 2015 WHC Title with a win this week, but that victory won't be easy in Burnsville against a 2A Cougar(6-2 & 2-1) team that is rested, and still has hopes for the WHC title themselves, having only lost to Hendersonville in WHC play....Speaking of the Bearcats, the WHC will be showcased once again this coming Thursday when Owen travels to face Hendersonville in a locally televised game by WMYA-TV40....In other WHC action later this week, 1A Avery County will travel to 2A Madison County, while Polk County will be Idle this week....

On a side not, Robbinsville joins Swain as the only teams in SMC history to beat Murphy 3 times in a row.

Good job Rick. You have the conference record for Mountain Heritage wrong. You have 2-4 and it should be 2-1. Good report though.

Rosman also beat Murphy 3 times in a row between 1998-2000, but that 2000 victory was the Tigers last in this series!

Thanks for the correcttion, I generally do a good job of proofreading and editing before I post, but must have hit the wrong key because I knew MT. Heritage had only lost to Hendersonville in conference play....Again, thanks for correcting my error, and good luck to the Cougars this friday...

Mitchell actually won the WHC in 2011 Rick. As always good job.

Thanks for the Correction, but wasn't that 2011 title a shared WHC Title, or was it an outright conference championship for your Mountaineers?....Again, thanks for the correct info...

great report T-town.....NW 1A will be decided on that last Friday night in Pilot Mtn......the Bears and Walkertown on the 30th is huge but either way it will come down to the last one.....1AA west to be very interesting this year....too many good teams to put finger on a solid pick.....

Murphy and Rville playing twice a season is coming to a end very soon.

His petition to launch an Early College in Graham County has finally made it through and they will no longer be in Murphy's division. Robbinsville will now be moving down to the 1/2 A division where they will play tag football at weightlifting. Right now I hear 4th period is the toughest but the 2nd period class is going to give them all they want in the coming years. Whoever wins it will have to earn every bit of the title.

It is either this scenario or he is praying that the casino creates enough jobs over in Murphy to bump them up to 1AA. What say you BK? ;)

Murphy went from around 440 to 495 this year. 10 or 15 more kids and they will be all over 1AA. Thats all I meant. But I am sure they are working to fix the problem as we speak. lol. If Murphy had to count the nerds they would have never been 1a.

Tiger, I read that in the ACt or Graham star. cant remember for sure but I did read it . Talking about the 3 in a row. Was Rosman in the SMC at that time? I think so.

Yes 2011 was a shared championship with Hendersonville even though Mitchell beat them head to head in the regular season and playoffs that year, we slipped up and lost by a point to Owen that year, thus the share. Not totally sure but just going by memory of looking at banners in the gym I think we have maybe 2 or 3 other conference championships, maybe 1 in the mid 90s and 1 or 2 in the late 80s, not sure if any of these were outright, but I'm pretty sure the one in the late 80s was a 3 way share with Mitchell, Avery, and Owen, with all one loss, Owen beating Mitchell, Avery beating Owen, then Mitchell beating Avery.

Good stuff!

Appreciate the info, and just seems to make this game with Mountain Heritage all the more important since there's an opportunity for an "undisputed" conference title?

I know there's been a lot of big games between the Mountaineers and Cougars thru the years, but where would you rate this one Mitchaneers1?

Yes, Rosman was in the SMC, and these games were all conference games:

1998: Rosman 21-13
1999: Rosman 26-20
2000: Rosman 27-16

Bulldogs were state-ranked in both 99' and 00' when the Tigers pulled the upsets...

The 1997 and 2001 games also came right down to the wire, but Murphy won both of those conference games in Murphy 27-21 and 18-13...

Ever since 2007, Murphy has scored 40 or more points in every game against the Tigers, which were all victories by the Bulldogs....

The '00 Murphy team were unbeaten and a serious title contender before the injuries hit.

For as many injuries as Murphy has had the last two seasons I don't think it compares to the 2000 season.

It sure seems like this is the biggest one, but my years run together so bad without looking at the records I can't say for sure. It seems like when one of them has a very good team the other one is usually down. We have generally played bigger more important games with our other rival Avery in the past, and they used to be our predominant football rival and Heritage was more of our basketball rival. But since the resurgence of Heritage football 6 or 7 years ago this rivalry has become very heated again and this has been the most buzz in the community about the game I can remember, as you would expect with the championship on the line. It also helps that they have 4 starters from Mitchell County on their team, and we have a couple that have played on Yancey County teams in the past.

Sounds as though it's going to be a great atmosphere at the game this friday in Burnsville...

Thanks for the insight, and good luck to your Mountaineers this friday!

It was a shared title Rick, but since we beat Hendersonville in the regular season and the playoffs, I say we won it. :)
