The playoff picture is now in sight and the excitement is in the air. I have followed HS football closely since I graduated and the power from east to west and west to east is a given to flow back and forth. From 1970 to 2002 the west has won 20 4A championships and the East has won 12. However 2 of those were to RC playing in the west. Most North Carolinian's probably consider RC and eastern team but lets not split hairs. Sub division started in 2003. Since then the West has won 13 out of 14 years in 4AA. One of those years was RC playing in the West as well but there is clear domination over those years. Most of those games were not close.
In 4A, ACR won it in 03 then 4 straight by Greenville Rose followed by Hoggard and 71st as the East claimed 6 straight before ACR ended the streak. Then the East won 4 of the next 6 years. So the East has fared much better in 4A . This year things looked very bad in the East until SC was pushed East, now they have a chance again, other wise this appears to me, to be one of the weakest 4A East fields that I can remember. Look at the comparison of SOS from East to West with projected scd. There are 101 4A teams this year.
Rose 59 vs N.Durham 56
Cardinal Gibbons 89 vs SE Raleigh 87
W.Johnston 88 vs Person 97
Cape Fear 69 vs Clayton 90
Scotland 67 vs New Bern 76
DH Conley 84 vs Seventy-First 61
Hillside 85 vs Hoggard 48
New Hanover 31 vs Pine Forest 49
Davie 10 vs SE Guilford 28
Glenn 42 vs AL Brown 38
Watauga 101 vs SW Guilford 45
Dudley 18 vs Alexander Central 95
E.Forsyth 17 vs McDowell 96
TC Roberson 99 vs N.Davidson 35
Mt.Tabor 39 vs Porter Ridge 46
Catholic 47 vs Parkland 86
It isn't as difficult to be 9-1 or 8-2 when you play as soft of a scd as you see in with the East teams.I would say SC is by far the best team in the East probably follow by Hillside and CF. Hillside most impressive game to me would be an 8 point loss to Dudley. Hard to believe the game was that close looking at the stats, 512 to 225. Hillside struggled to beat a 5-6 NB team and a 7-4 SD team. They also beat Cardnal Gibbons 41-35. Hard to say how good CG is because their scd is very weak also.
CF best wins were against 3A Terry Sanford(7-3) 42-35 and 71st (8-2) 29-27. The rest of their scd is very weak. Also, 75% of their yards come from 1 player. This can work, just ask NB and Page but it usually doesn't.
If we took SC out I would say there are at least 7 teams in the west that could win the East and I don't think there are any team in the East that could win the west. I hope to see the shift start to change back to the East soon but it isn't here now.
