One of the skewed statistics is the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations. When hospitals started back with non-emergency surgeries, they began to test all for COVID-19 as part of the pre-op process. Of course, many of them test positive, but exhibit no symptoms. Because they are hospitalized for the surgery, they are classified as COVID-19 related hospitalizations. Now I have no idea what percentage of these hospitalizations are like that, and obviously they aren't the ICU patients, but that definitely skews the numbers.
I’d be interested in knowing the source of the information showing diagnosis codes for all the ICU beds in the state. Haven’t seen that anywhere.
I suspect that the vast majority of non-emergency surgery patients who test positive pre-surgery are not admitted at all until they are negative. Especially if they’re asymptomatic. The doctor will postpone the surgery. If they’re symptomatic and serious enough for hospitalization, they’re there for COVID, not the surgery.

Thanks TD. I was looking for that info that shows all the other reasons people are hospitalized, in ICU, or on ventilators, besides COVID. Don’t think that’s available. My point being that, regardless of why ICU beds are in use, they can run out pretty quickly, especially in rural areas. And it’s likely that a large portion are being used for patients with this virus. A lot of people are looking for ways to minimize or ignore COVID instead of helping to work to defeat it. Only when most people take it seriously can we get back to “normal”.
Exactly. Rural NC could really be impacted terribly by this if it starts spreading like crazy and right now it is. I'm afraid of what the next month will look like. We also need to take into account the poor health conditions of many people in these areas.
With that said, take this seriously. Stop acting like it's some crazy ploy. Take it serious, or your kids will not go back to school, you won't have football, and people you love will die.

Depends on your definition of death rate. In North Carolina, 1479 deaths for 81,331 positive cases is 1.82%. Certainly not staggering, but higher than most diseases by far. For most, it’s not a death sentence. But what about for your mother or grandfather?
More people have died from Covid in 4 months than the last 3 flu seasons combined. It doesn't matter how old these people are or what their conditions are.

This is been going on for 7 plus months or more. It seems like a bad dream and I wish I would wake up in the morning and things would be back to normal. Instead, I worry how much longer I have to worry about getting it, know at my age I may never see my son and his family again. Prayers for all of us ! Don't mean to sound like this but I have never been this scared of anything in my life but just try to take it day by day and pray for my son working in Forsyth & Davidson Counties facing to many people every day. I try to stay strong for him. I have not seen my granddaughter since Christmas. Sorry just venting. If you don't like to hear it just say so and I will keep it to myself.
TD I worry about people like you during this time. It angers me that so many people don't seem to care for lives like yours and if you get it and die that they would dismiss it as "well he was old, or had health problems."

Herd immunity isnt going to happen Rblackk. New studies show antibodies only stay in the blood for as little as 5 weeks for some people.
It's either: A) we create an effective vaccine, which will take years B) we're stuck with it but we find an effective treatment that greatly mitigates the risk C) we're stuck with it but eventually it mutates to a weaker form or D) we're stuck with it and it retains it's current level of lethality

As for the low true case fatality rate for Covid, that's fantastic but a .3% or .4% death rate is still at least 6 to 8 times higher than the true flu case fatality rate (the flu doesn't actually kill .1% of people infected, those numbers are based on documented cases). Also we still don't know what ramifications this virus may have on your long term health. For some there may be permanent damage to organs even if they didnt get critically ill, we won't know the answer to that question for years because this is a novel virus.
No, I dont think people should be locked up in their homes for years, humans can't live that way. But life as we once knew it won't return until A), B) or C) in my previous post happens, that's just the reality of the situation. Do I believe that wearing a mask and socially distancing in public spaces would make things more palatable for everyone and lower the risk for the most vulnerable amongst us in the interim? I do.

All mainstream media has an agenda (MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, it's all garbage) but no matter what slant the media outlets take after November that doesn't change a thing, the virus is still going to be here and it's still going to be real.
Personally I wouldn't get my info from paid shills and talking heads nor base my opinions off that content. I would instead digest the latest findings from the medical experts and scientists who haven't been corrupted by political agenda, but that's just me.

Fauci has been all over the board, wear masks, don't wear masks. It's going to get worse and it is nothing to worry about. Fauci has lost his mind or this CORONA-19 virus has taken his common sense when he was quarantined. Sick man or working for China....
Originally when this started research suggested wearing a mask might not be effective. There has been more research since then that suggest wearing a mask can help reduce the amount of droplets from you mouth.

Fauci is a has-been and this Covid-19 has been more than he can handle along with many others. It is more different than anything anyone has faced so they don't know how to predict it's progress. Lots more testing needed.
That right there is why we must take this serious. There are so many unknowns.
