Surry Central @ East Wilkes

Thoughts? Last year EW sneaked out of Dobson with a 24-18 OT win. Last week SC handled Alleghany just as easily as EW did west wilkes. Being so early in the year it's hard to tell if your good or the other team is just bad.

I think this game will tell us a lot about 3 teams: EW, SC and Allegahaney.

It'll come down to the defenses for sure here. Both weren't tested at all week one but the offenses were the show.

Last year's game could have went either way, East played with more heart and made the most of it. SC imo was more talented on offense but lacked the D to pull it out. East had #'s issue but their heart won it for them.

This year it'll be the same. I think East's win was way more impressive last week, they ran all over West and that's not a good sign for West. SC meanwhile faced a young and out of wack Alleghany squad.

We will see the true teams for both this week. A great underrated series this is.

I dont think surry central is that great of a team I think it had more to us being that bad. Worse I've seen us in a long time... Its going to be a long season. We might beat elkin, north stokes, or south stokes...but then again that's basically all we won last year with much older imo better talent...usually a typical year for us these days unfortunately. 2014 seems like a distant memory almost... Loved that season

When is the last time Surry Central was good? With the way East Surry & Mount Airy have been so dominant and North Surry really taking strides in the right direction, when will Surry Central be able to do that? Do they just not have solid male athletes in the school?

Over the years I've seen Central play the offense has been biggest issue.

Surry Central under Monty Southern has proven people wrong in the past. I see them taking this game. I think it will be close.

They had a real good year about 7 or 8 years back, but don't think they have ever had consistently good years. Usually middle of the pack in there conferences.

SC's issues have always been pretty much the athlete department. Pre 2000 they struggled to have consistent classes until the 90's when Alex Mebane got there. Before him they had one of the nation's longest losing streaks, it was even on ESPN according to old newspaper articles (never seen any footage though.) Mebane installed the wishbone option set and they found stability which never left. Even Holder ran it when he was there some years. Dave Johnson and Southern were really the two who got the program stabilized. Their talented classes are once in an era though, 2005 and 2016 were literally around dry spots.

As for their issues now, SC's having numbers issues like a lot of schools. Their Junior class situation was really dire at one part in the summer, early on they had 2-3 kids show up. I counted 5 in the season preview which is a step up, but they are very senior heavy this year. The skill players they have are good for them, especially the QB. He's the best I've seen them have, the kid can chunk it. They also have a nice back set. But going down the ages it's not as good. They play awfully hard but this gonna be their best year at getting stuff done.

? mark for them is what is going to happen once Southern retires, he's been the HC as long as I've been around he started my freshman year in 07. He's close to retirement age. Whenever he does go that's gonna be a huge ? mark in terms of how they good. If they make the wrong hire they'll be in a deep spot. I expect it sometime in a few years.

Very good game too. I hate NFHS wasn't around then, the clips I seen of it were super fun.

2016 in that area was insane. So many good teams that year. Probably the best all around year for Wilkes county, every team had winning records that year. WC finally woke up after underperforming for so long, North Wilkes was underratidly good under Chipman, West had their one excellent season under Hunt, and you guys were solid again. Never before that I can remember and it was a nice surprise. Hard to believe that was 8 years ago.

Wasn't that the year there was a 3 way tie for the conference title between Mount Airy, East Surry, and Walkertown? They did a coin flip or something to see who got the title for playoff seeding purposes. Think that was North Surry coach's senior year at MA. I forget how young he is sometimes.

Very hard to believe I currently work with guys who was on the EW 13-1 team from 2015. Unreal how that's been almost 10 years. Seems like yesterday.
