Conference play began in 7 different conferences around the state last week, and there were a few surprising results...In addition, 2 of the top 10 teams in the 1A class lost, so a shakeup in this week's poll will take place...Let's take a look at what happened around the state...

1A West(36)
-----------------
SMC(7)
----------
Conference play began last friday in the SMC, and the two teams that have won 2 of the last 3 state 1A titles clashed in Murphy as the Bulldogs(5-1 & 1-0) broke away from a close game in the first half to subdue(28-12) the Black Knights(3-2 & 0-1), thanks in large part to Sr. RB Kadrian McCrae who rushed for a TD, and returned a 1st Qtr kickoff 98yds for another TD...In Andrews, Rosman(2-4 & 1-0) jumped on the Wildcats(1-5 & 0-1) to take an early 18-0 lead...However, that lead wouldn't last as the Wildcats rallied with a late score in the final 2 minutes only to have the Tigers bat away the potential game-tying 2pt conversion pass attempt in the Tigers 21-19 win...Meanwhile in Hayesville, Swain County(2-3 & 1-0) pummeled(48-7) the Yellowjackets(1-5 & 0-1) in the SMC opener...Cherokee(5-0) destroyed the Carolina Gladiators(53-6) in their final non-conf tuneup before traveling to Bryson City this week for the SMC Game of the Week with Swain County..

NWC(6)
-----------
In Dobson, Mt. Airy(6-0) remained unbeaten as RB Johnathon Smith rushed for 3TDs to lead the Bears over 2A Surry Central(37-7)...In Jamestown, East Surry(3-3) played Ragsdale off their feet, but missed a late FG attempt in the final seconds in losing(34-33) a heartbreaker to the 4A Tigers...In Yanceyville, South Stokes(2-4) got a big morale boost as the Sauras edged(29-28) 2A Bartlett-Yancey..Meanwhile, Bishop-McGuinness(2-4) beat(22-8) the Greensboro Panthers Home School to the delight of their home crowd...W-S Prep's(1-3) trip to Charlotte to face Country Day didn't end so well for the Phoenix as they were shutout(51-0)...North Stokes(0-5) was OPEN last week, and will try to end their 17gm losing-streak this week in Concord at First Assembly before beginning NWC play on Oct 6th...

YVC(8)
----------
For the last several years, West Montgomery(3-2 & 0-1) has dominated the YVC, but that may be coming to an end this year as North Stanly(4-1 & 1-0) stunned(28-20) the Warriors in Mt. Gilead...Meanwhile, North Rowan(4-1 & 1-0) reintroduced themselves to the YVC with a dominating(54-7) performance against North Moore(1-4 & 0-1), and will look to make it 2 in a row at home this week when they face South Stanly(2-3 & 1-0) who won their first YVC game in Denton(41-7) against South Davidson(1-4 & 0-1)...In Albemarle, the Bulldogs(2-3 & 1-0) ended their 3gm losing-streak with their first shutout(27-0) of the season against Chatham Central(1-4 & 0-1) in the YVC opener...

Thanks Tigertown for continuing to do these weekly 1A reviews. Much appreciated

Your welcome, and my thanks to NCPreps, Carolina Preps, and all the NC Newspaper writers around the state who still provide free access to read their material, so that I'm able to recognize some of the young men who make contributions to their respective teams!
