Spring sports suspension extended

They shouldn’t have shut things down to start with. This is going to have to run it’s course. All they’re doing is bankrupting the country especially the service industry.

Shut it down and the deaths are in the tens (or hundreds) of thousands. Pretend it’s a hoax, and it would be in the millions. Listen to the medical people and not the politicians.

We survived measles, mumps, small pox, polio, and scarlet fever. The problem is you can’t quarantine a virus in 2020. If we were all subsistence farmers with no need to go to the bank, supermarket, or pharmacy then quarantine might work. As it is this thing can live on surfaces for 3-14 days, if you’ve been to the gas station, supermarket, Walmart or anywhere else chances are you’ll be in contact with the virus. The answer is a vaccine not quarantine. Quarantine is going to bankrupt us and we will probably still contract the virus sooner or later.

Yeah so we’d might as well go on about our lives. Quarantine isn’t going to work.

There is almost no chance of reducing the risk to zero. But staying home as much as possible, and taking reasonable precautions when it’s necessary to go out will greatly mitigate the risk.
I’ve been down that path of months in the ICU in a coma, with a ventilator, months of rehab, learning to walk again and being fed through a tube for six months. If staying home with little income is the alternative, I’ll take it every time.

Staying at home will work if people will do it. South Korea managed to get it under control very quickly. I don't guess some people will care until it's their dad or mom that bites the dust with it.

We’re not South Korea. It’s apples to oranges. All I’m saying is I’m not sure this will work for the United States period

If everbody in the United States had this virus how many would it kill, I would guess 5 million at most . When the economy is destored, which it will be,them we go into a depression that will make the 1920s look like child's play. 10s of millions will die from hunger, secicide, murder it will be like the wild west .. I never though this many American citizens would fall for what's been laid at our feet. I remember my grandpa telling me when I was just a young boy, that only 1out of ten people are leaders, and the rest are followers . Been one of the most accurate statements I've ever heard.

Are you and all you love willing to be among that five million that you estimate would die?

lol wow. Completely uniformed and ignorant. I sincerely hope this virus doesn’t kill one of your loved ones. The healthcare system cannot operate without the quarantine. Do you not understand what that means? It’s unfortunate that people are being furloughed and/or losing their jobs entirely. Maybe electing politicians in the future that actually care about the working class and not corporations will improve our well being.

who employs the working class??? Corporations. Oh yeah and if there’s no corporations there’s no working class. Well I guess we can all work for the government and be like the old ussr

Don't buy that notion. That's an excuse to let corporations do as they please.

greed drives economy regardless of political system. I’m much more comfortable with the corporation setting wages based on supply, demand, and skill set as opposed to the government doing it

562 died in NY state on Thursday (one day) from the virus. Will that continue to increase?

It’s not about the government doing it versus the status quo. There are plenty of companies out there that realize that their employees are equally important to their customers and their shareholders.

Unfortunately, there are far more that operate with the premise that anything that makes a dollar is inherently good. Especially huge companies where the executives are far removed from the people who are the nuts and bolts of the operation. And their pay, bonuses and stock options drive their decision making.

There is a large space between socialism (or communism) and a robber baron society. We need to be filling that space as a society. But we seem to be headed back to the days of the Mellons and Carnegies. And our political process is driving that. And the megarich and some greedy corporations drive the political process.

I’ve said it before. I’m a small business owner whose business is at a standstill right now. But also a capitalist who happens to believe in equal access to healthcare as a right. And one who will stay at home as much as possible until this thing has passed. At which point, we need to reassess some of our values and who we choose as leaders.

that’s good. All I know is my pocketbook has been larger with trump than Obama. Up until coronavirus the country was in the best shape it had been in since before 2008.

The financial success began with President Obama’s last four years and continued under President Trump. I don’t dispute that for people’s stock portfolio and chances of having a job, the last three years have been good. Whether it truly has benefitted most Americans is questionable.
But that’s missing the whole point. The issue here is that not everything should be measured in dollars and cents. And that’s a point that totally eludes the current administration.

It is about dollars and cents. A great democrat once said “it’s the economy stupid”. If people are working and have more money their lives are better. Democrats pretend to be idealistic, but they’re just as greedy and immoral as republicans. Plus if it’s about more than just the pocket book how about aborting fetuses? What about all the immoral bull crap the democrats stand for?

What-about-ism. The great argument of the far right. People’s lives aren’t necessarily better only because of economic circumstances. There’s a holistic viewpoint that matters. The economy is part of it, but not the whole picture. The environment. Public health. Quality of life for all people. All of those matter. As does the economy. Still doesn’t all boil down to the dollar only.

lol. A seemingly staunt republican crying about immorality.

Obama care really has improved public health. Look at how many more ventilators and resources hospitals have now. It’s is the most unfair tax ever levied on us citizens. Tax the lower middle class so the lazy bums can have insurance. Democrats that are rich don’t mind paying the Obama tax, but true working class Americans that we’re trying to get ahead got screwed with Obama care. America should be the land of opportunity for those who will work hard, not the land of mediocrity, free bubble up and rainbow stew.

People only had to pay a tax or penalty if they chose not to have insurance. So those without insurance end up in the emergency room where they get treated anyway. So who pays? The rest of us.
The selfish freeloaders are those who choose not to be insured because they don’t want to pay for it, even when they can.

The lack of preparedness can be blamed on a lot of things. The fact that we never seem to learn from other health crises. The elimination of the pandemic expert from the security council. The reduction of staff in the CDC in China. The cuts in CDC funding. All done by Trump.
But mostly the fact that the administration spent six weeks calling it a hoax and saying it would be over by Easter.

Requiring someone to buy something is totalitarian. It was an extra tax for my family. Insurance cost went up nearly a thousand a month. Maybe you can afford that, but I had to get a partime job to pay kids insurance. All the while if my wife would’ve quit her job we’d have paid a third of that

I work in health care. Obamacare did more to ruin the system than anything in the last 30 years
