With a lot of Western NC teams not even being able to play the Conf Tourneys due to snow, how rusty are the west teams going to be since they have not had a game in 10 days ??

It definitely won't help, unless to let a few minor injuries heal.Good luck to your Wildcats, scrappy group of young girls. They could shake things up in the SMC in the next couple of years.

Didn't seem to hurt Smoky much. Girls won by 40 and boys by 30. Hopefully other teams will not be rusty either.

What's going to be REALLY interesting is if thing gets ugly out east. A bunch of first round games for Tuesday have already been bumped because of weather, meaning that some teams might have to play back to backs while others will get the day off in between.

Agree, we have nearly 4" of snow at 5 am this morning in Rosman ,and it's still pouring with more snow possibilly on the way for Wednesday night into Thursday morning....A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Wed night into Thursday with several more inches possible?

Looks like the start of the basketball playoffs is going to really be impacted this week, and we could see Sunday games scheduled as we did several years ago?

Normally these kinds of situations end up being a huge disadvantage for the mountain counties with games getting backed up and the mountain counties having to play back to back when others don't. This is going to be different though. With light snow falling over most of the state, and superintendents propensity to cancel stuff, the playoffs are going to be backed up in a big way. If you believe the forecast and who does based on the fact that they totally missed this one, the first 3 rounds may well end up being played back to back to back on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I assume that the regional dates are reasonably rigid in that the venues that are being used are unlikely to be available in the days following the original dates. Is anyone familiar with a situation like this from the past. What would happen if the games could not be played by Sunday?

These cancellations on Tuesday shows why we should play on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The NCHSAA should move back to MWF format. I never agreed with the TTHF.

Tues thurs and Saturday is a better format for teams. Allows coaches to get their teams ready on Monday. Especially since most conference tournaments end Friday it allows for a day of preperation before the first rd.

Seems like the MWF schedule would have been a perfect fit this year since most of the conferences didn't hold their conference tournaments, especially the Western Conferences?

I know the NCHSAA wants to give teams as much practice time as possible after the brackets are released on saturday afternoon, and I'm sure that played a big part in why the schedule is what it is, but the Tues,Thur,Sat schedule allows for very little wiggle room, which is problematic at best during the winter?

And another predicted bigger snow storm is now predicted for Wed night into Thursday with Winter Storm Watches already in place, and snow likely over the entire state with 3 to 5 inches predicted for most places, and a predicted 8 inches or more in and around the Raleigh area.....

Is it possible that we could see a Regional schedule condensed to the point that teams would play later next week in the Regionals instead of early week games, due to all the postponements, particularily in the West?

Going to be a headache for the NCHSAA scheduling-wise and the team Coaches who have to prepare their teams with little or NO practice time or preparation, which could lead to a few unexpected surprises in the playoffs?

I think play conference finals on a Tuesday, brackets come out on Wednesday and play Friday. Then play Tuesday and Friday of the following week. Teams have time to prepare and also it lessens the impact of the long travel without the pods.

Good points, it will be tough to play back to back especially after driving 4 hrs one night then heading back the next for 4 or 5 hr drive again

I know of 2 conflicts that came up with Wake Forest playing at the Joel on same night and we had to play at a high school.

Of course, this year 1A and 2A are in the Annex.

Thanks roadglide, we are hoping the next 2 seasons will be better. We ar very young with only 1 senior of the 2 getting any playing time. We also have a couple of good freshman coming up next year. But with any small area you just hope they stay together.

Wlos said Rville would get 0.4 inches and Andrews would get 3 inches. I knew that was wrong. IF Andrews gets 3 then Robbinsville will get 6 or 7 inches. I live 2 miles from the school and we have 5 inches or more and still snowing.
This Global Warming is Freezing me to Death. lmao.

64 teams now in the playoffs adds an extra game which crowds it a little bit logistically.

I always liked the idea of conference tournaments being played on Friday nights. Better crowds.

I like the teams getting Monday off but if weather is going to be an issue they may need to look at it and make a change.

The state is looking at going to the regional semi-final at a central neutral site or the home court of the higher seed if no suitable neutral site is available and the higher seed gym meets what is needed. The regional final would then be played at a set regional site, like Winston Salem. The positive of this would be the regional semi-final schedule would be much more flexible as court and travel time would less of an issue.

It was moved to T Th Sat cause that's what the coaches wanted. The first game is the most important game in the playoffs. You don't win that one, you are done. Weather happens. It's what is best for teams, not fans.

I agree with Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday for the sectionals. I do think they may should be more flexible with the weather.

Does anyone think with the 64 teams it is time to ditch the conference tournaments? One person told me to make do that and make it more teams but have play in games the Tuesday after the season ends. The brackets would be set on Saturday still and the playin games would just advance the winner on as one of the 64.

I think 64 is more than enough but the conference tournaments could be replaced by two non conference games played during the current season schedule which would back the start of the sectionals up a week. One idea that I thought was good. Finish the regular season the same Friday, skip the conference tournament, and then start the sectionals up the next Thursday or Friday. Everyone would have played Friday so a few days rest. Also, with some of the travel in the first round Friday makes sense. This would also offer more flexibility for weather. The sectionals would end the next Friday. NCHSAA has looked at trying to play the state title games a week earlier. Regionals would not compete with Duke v UNC or the ACC womens tourney. State finals would then compete with them but not the ACC mens tournament. Issue then become availability for the arenas as that is the last regular season week of conference play at Wake and UNC. Reynolds at NC State is the women's gym.

I agree Knights4 . The first game is the most important and if you don't win and are done. We would not ask Football Coaches to go play a play-off game without a practice. So we should not ask any other coach to do the same. The brackets were not finalize until 7:45 on Saturday night. So a solution to that would be to allow teams to practice on that Sunday As far as conference tournaments are concerns this is a big money for most conference which helps pay for the hardware that the conference give out not only in Basketball but in all other sports so to cancel them would be a huge loss for the conferences. Just my thoughts

I never understand rushing bball playoffs anyway... 3 playoff games in one week is unnessary... Go to 2 games a week .. The season is long enough for everyone to get games in.. If football didn't go into middle of dec teams could actually play game before then..

Good stuff, and I agree with a lot of those ideas.....A restructuring of the Regionals has been needed for quite some time because venue use or conflicts seem to have been the norm, and things didn't get any better when the Regionals were in Greensboro with the ACC Men and Women's tournaments and other concepts that were NOT fan friendly if you know what I mean?....Interesting to hear about the possible future Regional Semi-final venue changes?....I would eventually like to see a Regional held at UNCA's new activities center in Asheville, simply because it would be great for some of us casual fans in this part of the state to get an opportunity to see a Regional Semi-final or final without having to spend 8 hours on the interstate to do so as has been the case since the Regionals left Hickory?

The thought of moving the Sectionals back a week, seems like a good idea to me as does the elimination of the conference tournaments...Although, I know that could be a contentious issue in some conferences where the season-ending tournament carrys a lot of meaning.... However, the additional rest that you mentioned would have to be an overall good thing for all the playoff teams as it would allow them to get some rest, and heal the wounded for the playoffs, which in turn, would likely make the playoff games more competitive with rested and healthy playoff teams....

I completely understand why the Coaches would want a Tues,Thur,Sat schedule because it does give his team more rest as well as more time to prepare for his team's playoff opponent, and agree that you've got to win the first one before the next one....However, a lot of Coaches may be more flexible after this year's playoff schedule, thanks to the weather?
