Guys I know there is a lot that goes into shrine bowl selection. No Mallard Creek players. I know they are young but the big kid that plays tackle and DT not on the roster or the other big kid. is it because these kids passed on combine? I see no Zamir which I understand from his standpoint. The national all-star games or nothing. Also he is enrolling early to UGA. I guess that would be the same for KJ Henry? Glad Tyler Smith made it. This will surely help get him a D1 offer. MY bad didn't see henry

Nice team....wish them well. This thing is usually won by the best Oline and QB and I just dont know enough about thses QB's to evaluate much. As far as the MC kids.....Its really a low level intrest for those kids typically. Mostly because there HC is one of the most sucessful coaches in the country and he cant get a gig on this staff. Meanwhile we have coaches who have been in CMS for 10 years as a HC and have never even won a playoff game and they will be coaching this year. Its all political. Old boys club stuff.

Only 4 kids from Meck county on the squad. You tell me.

Ahlers impressed me. Big and moves pretty well. Can spin it. Smart. Team has put up big numbers.

Would have liked to the QB/defender from Cape Fear on the team. Big, strong player that leaves it on the field. Missed first three games (?).

Just off the top of my head the kids missed in Meck County-

- Kalan Allen MC
- Damir Faison Vance
- Hickman and Cujisck Butler
- Emanual Wilson North meck
- Jalen Weddington MC
- Garret Nagy Hough

Now....its possible these kids didnt wan to play and that takes nothing away from the kids who did make it.

MC probably had six players st least that are strong enough players to be on the team. Don't think any of their players showed at a combine which would be helpful. Players that will early enroll freshman year have had some obstacles with CMS scheduling and regulations in the past.

Glad to see the Harding kids, who are both terrific, making the squad.

The Center Nick Mackovic and OLB Alan Tisdale from Page are both very good ball players, solid picks overall. Was surprised to not see more CMS players though. Congrats to the kids either way.

If you have to attend the combines? I pretty much don’t see anyone from Mallard Creek making the squad in the near future. Not a lot of interest within the program. The majority of them are not familiar with the SB.....

Charlotte may have had the lowest turnout for the combine. Smaller towns and traditional football schools seem to know more about the game than the larger city schools.

For Gerald it was a shock n were so proud, damir said he didn't do the combine because he initially was gonna graduate early n didn't wanna get hurt b4 enrolling in westpoint

True...but you can do things to help make it more interesting

I'm not sure they need to, just to cater to one or two schools that show no interest. At the Olympic combine, they had 121 kids with about 40 signing up from Mecklenburg County (none from Mallard).

At AC Reynolds they had another 202 show up, none from Mallard.

At Kinston they had 78 show up, none from Mallard.

They get enough kids who show interest, over 400 not counting the 2 specialists camps. I doubt anyone sees any need to go beyond to try to attract some folks who show no interest.

SC had over 560 show up.

Lots of kids...mostly 3rd string right guards. Kids who have zero chance of making the team.

Now...Go look at the top 25 recruits in NC and tell me how many actually play in this game. Not selected.....but who plays. By December 20% of these kids say no thanks.

There is an issue. Some of the top players are not interested, withdraw from the process, or decide not to play after being selected. Injuries play a part in some of those but many decide they do not want to participate for various reasons. There was a time that players would never think of turning down the opportunity.

The Shrine Bowl attempts to generate as much money as possible (for the hospital) with the least amount invested utilizing a lot of volunteers and donations. It is a thin line to walk and more so now. The job the Shriners and volunteers do is amazing! I agree that there are things that need to be done from a grassroots level to bring the interest level back up.

Go look at the top 25 and of those that didn't play each year, how many were truly "not selected" vs didn't participate.

The coaches want the best players. The Shriners want the best players so they can sell the most tickets. Hard to choose folks to play who don't choose to participate. I guess we could just pick on what the recruiting gurus say, but I'd guess you'd still have the same folks as no shows.

They dont get the best and in some cases not even close. They have started Olineman in recent years that wouldnt start for some schools in NC.

They have perception issue and the selection process for the coaching staff is as political as it gets.....Pure and simple.

You have an assitant that has been a HC in Meck county who has not won a single playoff game in 10 years as a HC. Good ole boys club.

on that we agree 100%. We had kids in the late 80s in WNC that played Div-I the next year that didn't even get invited to try out. Very political and cliquish.

They did not have tryouts in the 1980's! The combines started in the last ten or so years. Anyone can attend. For around 15 years the Shrine Bowl was played the same day as the NC state title games.

A lot of D1 (FCS formerly D1AA and FBS formerly D1) do not get selected. There are 44 slots with one guaranteed to the specialist and usually one to a long snapper. That leaves 42 players. A few years ago they lowered it to 40 players for only one game. There are 378 football teams in the NCHSAA. A lot of teams are not going to have a player on the team.

thats sounds even more accurate - that around the mid 80s they just invited folks and they're weren't tryout or camps.

In Zamir White's case it was simply and issue of timing. For him to graduate early, he has to take his final exams the week of Shrine Bowl Practice. I know at Scotland the honor of playing in the game is emphasized.
