I do not know much about Kinston except they are 15 and 0 and that tells me a lot.

You never know what your getting in the east.1997 and 2004 I thought for sure we were bringing back championships.

Yeah I'd like to see that Shelby vs Monroe match up. Shelby shouldn't sleep on kinston, although I know nothing about kinston this year, I've seen them in the past and they've had some good teams. Made the state championship a a couple of years ago in football and semis another year.

I have come across a couple of 2A threads during the last couple weeks. A lot of people expected the Northeastern and SW Edgecombe games to be close and for Kinston to lose. Both times, Kinston has eked out a 1 point victory. Against Northeastern they were down 13 at the half and down 15-8 going into the 4th quarter against SWE. In their 2nd round game, they slipped by Ayden-Griffin ( a conference foe) 18-14. They may not look like much competition on the surface, but they apparently know how to find their way to a win. Shelby will have to jump on them early and often and don't sub with JVs until the 4th quarter to make sure they stay down. Prepare for them as you would Crest, South Point or Lincolnton.

You gotta be kidding. "Don't sleep on ...........". The most useless term on this site. How many times you seen either of these 2015 teams play? Those eastern 1A, 2A, and 3A teams never see anything remotely like Shelby's offensive passing. Shelby is a 3AA or 4A fourth round team cloaked in 2A.

Yeah I saw Hough play AL Brown this year and those teams had very good defenses but neither of them could beat Shelby, in my opinion.

Northeastern has been over rated every year by this site and what have they done? Nothing. Ever. Shelby has played many backups in many games this year and it hasn't changed the outcome. Kinston has a real shocker waiting for them.

Film doesn't do preparation justice. High school coaches don't know how to prepare for what Coach Ware has instituted at Shelby. Nor do they have defensive backs to cover 5 receivers on a play. Shelby's offensive line is freakishly good.

Going into the semifinals this week, there were 8 teams undefeated in all classifications, only 4 remain - Charlotte Catholic, Crest, Monroe, and Kinston. No team survives 15-16 weeks of football undefeated unless they have something special. I think Shelby is better and has been well-tested but they need to prepare for Kinston as though they were trying to upset big boy Crest.

I haven't seen Kinston play. But like I said I have in the past, I know the term don't sleep on is used too much but I stand by it.

I still expect shelby to win by 2 or 3 tds at least. But my point was seeing kinston in the past if they have anything similar to what they have it could be a better game than people think.

I also haven't seen Shelby this year, but I know what they bring to the table. I've seen them multiple throughout the years and I'm not from the east and yes usually they have nothing for the western teams.

The east has some good talent. But at the smaller schools a lot of it is wasted on many good skill players playing behind other running backs. Seems the middle of the state has embraced the passing game and the far west and far east have not. There are plenty of kids who would excel in the far west and far east from a more progressive approach to the game. The 4A schools in the east went to more passing long ago.

Shelby is the best team Crest played this year followed closely by South Point and Weddington.
They play their game and lights out.

I would say I hope we clean up the penalties and turnovers but that is not going to happen especially the penalties.I saw a couple refs throwing their flags while Shelby was warming up.I guess they were warming up to.

I've seen Kinston play 3 times this year and here's my opinion of their team:

Offensively

They run a variety of schemes, depending on the game situation, but they primarily run a spread offense, utilizing alot of screens (bubble, tunnel and middle) when they pass with a little bit of zone read with their running back Tavon Hearns. Hearns and Jeremiah Fields are their speedsters so if they get a seam or the sideline, Shelby better have a great angle to stop them. They also run some unconventional offensive formations (you have to see them to understand how they line up), which they can use in either short yardage or 2pt conversion situations. Their QB Vermillion is a smart passer who is very efficient with passing the ball and gets rid of the ball quickly. He is a pocket passer who isn't the fleetest of foot, but once again the offensive passing scheme is set up to make up for his lack of elusiveness and speed.

Defensively

They have a big and tall defensive front that does a great job at stopping the run, either outside or inside. They are rangy in the secondary, which can make it hard to consistently pass the ball on them due to their height.

Special Teams

Their kicker, Bailey Blake, is in her first year of kicking for Kinston and handles their extra point duties. She has nailed some clutch extra points in the playoffs against both Northeastern and SW Edgecombe and has improved as the season has progressed. On extra points, their formation allows them to decide to whether go for 2 or line up for the XP depending on if the defense is focused enough to adjust after a score! Kickoffs and punts are your typical for a high school team, where they do enough to get the job done.

Overall

Some may think that Kinston hasn't seen the type of speed or athletes that Shelby has, but remember that this is the same school has has won the past 4 2A State Championships in basketball and most of the basketball team plays football! Kinston has 20 seniors on its team, so they are a mature group who is as tough mentally as any team I've seen; if Shelby goes up they don't panic and will stick to their gameplan. I agree that Shelby's schedule has been tougher than Kinston's, but this isn't a 7 game series...Kinston just needs to be the best team at 4pm next Saturday if they want to win.

Has the Lions faced anyone who run pretty much the spread as them? I never seen the Vikings play but what I've seen on film their playing calling reminds me a lot of Shelby. It's had to judge speed on film, but from what I've seen so far I would give Shelby the edge on team speed but Fields "looks like he can get ghost 0-100" & "#23 just seem like a do all player."
I'm taking Shelby in this one for the seek of the Wild Wild West! But this Kinston team seem like the real deal but I don't know enough about the teams they've played, while I can the Lions has played the best the West has to offer from 3a - 2a outside of Monroe & EL! But I've seen enough to give Shelby the edge.

Yes sir we have I think we actually play better against the spread type teams ...we had the most trouble with the line it up and run right at us types ....

Crest Burns KM East Burke Ac Reynolds are just a few during the regular season that runs a little derivative of the spread in some ways ...

Kinston is undefeated we will have to play very good to win our third straight

Here is the scouting report on AG, for anyone that has to play them.... Oh wait never mind.

Not trying to sound cocky...but I really wish you could have seen us clicking like we were earlier in the season....like when we played East Burke...even Crest. We did what we had to Friday night but we didn't play our best football. When this Shelby team is clicking they are so much fun to watch. When Lee is healthy and our receivers are on it....man....it's fun.

Which player for Kinston is the one that won the state 100 meters?

You could make that comment about any of teams. If the teams that lost would have been clicking and healthy, they wouldn't have lost. Kinston has been winning, but the offense hasn't been clicking.

I think this will be a fairly ugly, hard fought game. If Shelby's defense holds tight in the first half, we'll pull away in the second.

I am from the East and don't think this game will be close. Kinston's offense is not impressive at all. They will not score many points. They have one speedy receiver who is very fast. The East is down this year. However, I am hoping Kinston wins.

Last night, I read a News & Observer (Raleigh) article about the playoffs. Although Shelby was mentioned in another part, they were left out when it came to streaks:

"Streaks: Plymouth is making its fourth straight appearance in the 1A state title while Charlotte’s Mallard Creek (4AA) and Boiling Springs’ Crest are making their third straight trips. Wallace-Rose Hill (1AA) and Charlotte Catholic (4A) are making their second consecutive appearances."

I think you guys got dissed.

I read somewhere (maybe facebook cant remember) that Coach Ware so far in his head coaching career has been to the title game more than he hasn't been to the title game

Pretty spectacular coaching resume already....

Good luck to the Lions Saturday...Bring another home
