First of all, I commend the coaching staff, and whoever else was involved, for setting up these scrimmages. Richmond was able to get some practice against 6 different teams this past week. That is something that I haven't seen much of in years past. Unfortunately, I got sick on Friday and was unable to go to Holly Springs, so I'm not sure how well they did there. I did see them against Millbrook, Reagan, Jack Britt, and Wakefield.
Concerns
1. The offense is definitely more versatile. However, when they line up, you can tell if they are going to pass or run. They fooled nobody in that regard. It's so strange to see a Richmond team have success in the air, but struggle on the ground. I'm not too concerned at this point, because there is a lot of speed in the backfield. I just do not see Richmond breaking any rushing records this year.
2. Turnovers were a big issue, but I kind of expected that considering all of the changes that they made on offense. Ziegler's passes are pretty accurate, but at times have been easy to read. There have been a hand full of fumbles, but most of them have been by the backups. For the most part, the play makers do seem to be protecting the ball.
3. There does not seem to be a lot of depth. The twos and threes struggle significantly. That could be a concern later in the season.
Positives
1. I like how quickly the offense is setting up for the next play. Last season, they used up nearly every second of the play clock before snapping the ball. This season, they seem to be ready to snap the ball when the ref blows the whistle. Despite the fact that they are lining up quickly, they are still doing a good job at rotating players in and out. That's not easy to do at that speed.
2. The receivers are getting a lot of yards after the catch. There have been a few times where they have been able to catch the ball in stride and turn it into something big, but for the most part, the receivers are having to make some big moves and break tackles in order to turn a pass into big yards. For the most part, they do seem to be doing it. There haven't been too many instances where one defender was able to end the play after a Raider reception.
3. The defense is showing some improvement. I know everybody in Rockingham is excited to see what the Raiders are going to do offensively, but defense has been the real issue the past few seasons. They still have their breakdowns from time to time, but for the most part, I like what I've seen from the defense. The tackling seems to have gotten better, and they are doing a pretty good job reading passes. They have had quite a few breakups and interceptions. They are still getting burned on some deep passes.
