The next realignment process has been delayed a year. The new conferences will still go into effect in the 2021-2022 school year, this just eliminates the “lame duck year.” I like this because enrollment fluctuates and a school may be 3A size when the realignment figures come out, however when the new conferences actually start 2 years later, enrollment may have dropped to 2A size and they are stuck in 3A for at least 2 years...usually 4. Case in point...Burns...thankfully we were able to move down this year but I digress. Now this might just be a one off...because they are looking to add 5A. They basically already have...but are just calling it “4AA” for now. They have to change the bylaws. But sounds like it’s gonna happen. Just not sure how the classifications are gonna be divided up, or how the playoffs are going to work yet. Should be interesting. The football coaches and AD’s are just going to have to hit the ground running on the scheduling for 2021 and 2022 because of the process being postponed. That’s the only downside to this.

I got a feeling the NCHSAA will screw this up.

The schools were very passive when they were presented numerous options seven years ago. The schools do not like change very much from what I have seen over the years especially when things are going good for them at the moment.

The schools should come up with ideas and tweak what the NCHSAA puts out. The five classes is not a done deal by any means. Getting the ability to have it available is why the change in the by laws is coming. It will be interesting the next two years, that is for sure!

Expect it to remain at eight football champions.
If it goes to 5 classifications, then there will be 5 championships. I actually like the proposal. Will there likely be uneven numbers in the classifications? Yes. But with the number of new schools coming online each year, it was bound to happen at some point.

I would love for it to be five!!!!!!!!!

If there are two classes, 1A and 5A, with 12.5% of the schools and three with 25% which is an idea that has been discussed do you think there will be five champions?

Do you think the schools from 2A-4A would go along with no subdividing when there will be more teams in their classification than there were between 2002-2016?

Once again, five or even six champions would be my ideal scenario. I expect eight to continue. Hope I am wrong.

Are you thinking 2A, 3A and 4A will subdivide and the other two won’t? If so, I suspect you’re right. I do think, however, that only having 12.5% in the classes at the top and bottom could place some schools in a precarious position from a conference standpoint and create even more split conferences.

oc, I agree with you 100%. I think they are selling out the anti split conferences for five classes to separate out the smallest and largest schools as much as possible.

That's what I said earlier, 5A or 6A for football, all other sports stay the same.
If that were to be the solution, does that mean that a school would be in one conference for football and a different conference for all other sports?

This was an option on the realignment before the current one. One alignment for football and one for all other sports. They would have probably staggered it like the Winter and Summer Olympics. The response heard the most from the schools was this would be too complicated and hurt school rivalries.

I have always thought due to logistics and geography that football could easily be aligned differently. Only travel to an opponent once every two seasons instead of yearly and almost all games are on non school nights except for JV games which have a bit more flexibility. Makes travel much easier.

Realignment will always be an issue based on ADM's going up and down and all the new charter schools opening that do not offer football. Five classes with five state titles in all sports is about the best option if they can get them lined up right.

Yes. Other states have done it that way for years. If I'm not mistaken, Alabama does it like that.

From reading this article, it sounds like it will require a 75% bote to change the bylaws to allow five classifications. That would surprise me greatly if that happened.

They need 75% of the schools to vote that the state can deviate from four classes. Currently the bylaws say four classifications. The change will allow there to be more. They will get that vote.

You’re more in tune with it than I am. Talked to an AD yesterday who doesn’t think so. But I don’t claim to know. Just seems that there is very little that 75% agree on.

The NCHSAA should not even work on a five class system proposal before the vote. They could change the bylaw and stay at four or go to six. I think 1A schools should see this as the first step needed in eventually separating out the “non traditional” schools.
