I do not know the 1st year head coach, only what I have heard. But since I like to judge for myself, I will not criticize him. But as a school, a program and as a team, improvement is a MUST. To help with that improvement, may I suggest a few things:
A. Get your feeder schools on a 4A playing schedule and stop playing 2A feeder schools....once they get to hs the level of competition is something they are not used to.
B. Get the school, booster club or even local community leaders to provide a van for the kids so they can have a ride home after practice. I know for a fact most of the Maxton and Prospect parents are hesitant to drive to Pembroke every evening to pick their son up from practice. This has worked in the past.
C. Go into the Prospect and Maxton communities and RECRUIT! Sell these kids on playing football. Former Ram coach Russell Stone was GREAT in this department. ..he went out and brought the athletes into the program. Makes little sense for your roster to be 90% Pembroke kids, and you have a whole pool of talent lying 5-10 miles east of you doing nothing.
D. Establish a repoire with the Pembroke State football staff and develop some type of football technique camp. Don't wait for Vonte Leach to give his annual football camp and hope some of your players attend.
E. And finally, think about this....out of the Maxton, Prospect and Pembroke communities, Maxton was known for winning state championships. What ever happened to those coaches? Their staff? Their former players? Why not bring some of that wealth of experience on board at PS? Winning is an attitude, so if you don't like winning, just ignore item #E.
So, powers that be at Purnell Swett, go back and consider some of these things.
