Pre-season Interview with Clinton Coach Johnson

Oh ok. Are you able to tell me some highlights of the interview?

Johnson excited about season. Helped 9 kids move to next level last season. Stressed importance of a scholarship and education at any level helping a kid continue to play and be educated. “A scholarship is a scholarship”- Coach Johnson. Not every kid is a D1 athlete but their are other opportunities than just D1. Says last years team was most blue collar team he has even been a part of. Says we got everything out of them possible. “We were talented, but we worked hard for our success”.

Lost a coach to Goldsboro, he will be successful there Johnson believes. I asked him about his thoughts on Turf, how Brunswick Co. schools went to turf, colleges like UNC have gone to turf. He said he prefers grass but will play in the parking lot if that’s where we have to play, just loves to play/coach.

Talked about how 90% of current players ran track in offseason. Others played baseball. Guys worked very hard in weight room this offseason.

We talked about the schedule. Surprise team of the conference: Goldsboro
All non-conference games are gonna be tough especially Cape Fear, NS Jax, and Central Cabarrus.

We asked him favorite sports movie: Remember the Titans

Thanks!! He couldn't be more correct in that a "scholarship is a scholarship". I've always said that if an athlete is good enough, someone will discover them, no matter how big or small the school. I'm also ecstatic to know that the guys have been working hard in the weight room and running track and baseball in the offseason. New Hanover Co. Schools is also contemplating the move to turf fields for the other schools. Legion Stadium has to be refurbished soon, it's at the end of it's life cycle.

I’ll try and find another way to post it so u can catch all of it. Off air though, his energy is infectious. I’m ready to come down from the booth and play for the guy.

I think he is spot on with Goldsboro being the surprise team. I feel confident in pre-season saying they have 3rd place locked up

Coach Johnson talks about WRH, ED, and JK in this interview. He has mad respect for those programs.

I liked what he said about "we will play in a parking lot if we have to"....shows the teams mindset and his coaching mentality...also like what he said about Spencer Westerbeek he was great for us last year as a sophomore only going to keep getting better reminds of a guy we had a couple years ago Chandler Whitfield...always around the ball always there to make a big play...our LB core is going to be very good

I agree! He said last year's team had a 'blue collar' mentality, they worked with what they had. I wonder if Coach Johnson is carrying that same mentality to this year's team....we lost a lot of seniors. This team is going to be fairly young, but I think we have enough senior leadership to have another successful season. I also love the chemistry between Coach Johnson and Coach Davis, encouraging the kids to play more than one sport, that an athlete at the school could play as many as four sports during the school year. 90% of the team ran track, the other 10% played baseball. Johnson said that Blake Smith is faster now because he played baseball and basketball. He also had the kids in the weight room, concentrating on getting bigger. I like Coach Johnson and Coach Davis. If you get the kids' trust, they'd run through a brick wall for you, and that's what Coach Johnson is doing. His enthusiasm is definitely rubbing off on the team.

Yeah looks like a couple basketball players are out there this year a couple 6'3 kids saw one 6'4 a couple more targets in the passing game huh....think it could be a breakout season for a kid like Blake hes gonna get opportunities on both sides of the ball probably in the return game aswell was impressed with his athleticism as a freshman....its a couple other guys im excited to see in action we got some athletes we are going to be faster in the backfield and in the backend of the defense
