NW, haven’t heard much about Mt. Airy baseball, seems E. Surry gets all the attention. Obviously they won last night, but tell us a little about them.

They seem to be a scrappy bunch and they improved throughout the year. After a few really tough years they have now posted back-to-back winning seasons. Looking at their schedule on Maxpreps, they only had 2 big losses this year (one to East Surry and one to North Surry). They played everyone else close throughout the year. They probably don't have enough to stop such a powerful Murphy team, but the fact that MA picked up a come from behind playoff win (the first in MANY years) on the road over a perennial 1A presence like South Stanly speaks volumes about the direction of that program. Big win for Coach Cawley and his kids!

West Craven over Red Springs 11-6 in 2A. Red Springs came a long ways to play and played hard. It was a good game for 6 innings.

Nash Central 5 Eastern Randolph 0
Providence Grove 4 East Duplin 1

PG travels to Nash in 2nd round. Guess all the PAC7 has to go through Rocky Mount?

Kidd, give us a run down on ER / Nash Central and what you heard about PG. Close games. The Randleman game Tuesday was close.

I see Cherryville plays Chatham Central Saturday. That should be a good one. I think game time for that game is 3:30 and then girls softball plays at 6:00

Nash Central threw a good junior right hander that had command of four pitches. I had to sit behind home plate and keep pitch count along with a guy from Nash. Something the state put in for playoffs because of numbers not adding up. Nash not an overly scary team but solid. Second batter hit his first ever home run but field is not very large, 315 down lines 360 in alleys according to fellow pitch counter. Balls carried well too. They do try and run a lot but slowed down after having fastest thrown out at second. As I said solid team but ER was in a rebuilding year. Final should have been 3-0 but for a dropped fly ball and another by catcher on force out at plate. I think PG can win if they score a couple of runs and Evan throws well.

As far as PG game heard it was close for most of the game. Kaleb, the catcher, came through with a 3-3 game to pull them into 2nd round. Glad because he is a fine young man. Patterson, their number one starter, left game fairly early with an unknown injury which could give them problems if they get past second round.

Wow 3:30? Getting quality umpires there then going to be interesting. Most have jobs that make it tough for a 3:30 game.

does anyone know much about mount airy, I am wondering if I should take the time to go watch mount airy @ murphy today. Do they have any arms good enough to hang with the big dogs?

Millbrook at Jordan: Suspended at 0-0 in 2nd inning due to weather, will resume at Noon on Saturday

Despite the loss of Howard, I'm really surprised to see North Stanly bow out in the 2nd round, shocked really. That was a really talented bunch that East Wilkes beat.

At this point it looks like a cakewalk for East Surry to the regional finals. No offense to East Wilkes or Polk County but I don't think they have a remote chance of beating East Surry.

If East Wilkes was good enough to beat N.Stanly, they’re good enough to beat East Surry. Anyone can win on any night at this point...you better come ready to play (ask teams like South Stanly, North Stanly, Rosman).

PAC7 teams hanging tough. PG will be a stern test for South Granville. Randleman just keeps winning but Midway will be a tough out.

If #1starter is healthy Tuesday I would agree on PG...

Randleman in that hole is hard to beat.

3rd Rd Matchups
1A West
8-East Wilkes at 1-East Surry
5-Polk Co. at 4-Lincoln Charter
11-Cherryville at 3-Uwharrie Charter
7-Pine Lake Prep at 2-Murphy
-Observations: Every team with a 1st Rd bye made it to 3rd Rd except Chatham Central

1A East
16-Manteo at 9-Falls Lake Academy
5-Rosewood at 4-Riverside
6-West Columbus at 3-Perquimans Co.
10-John A. Holmes at 2-Bear Grass Charter
-Observations: Manteo has been a charter school killer in the 1st two rounds, tough test ahead with Falls Lake to keep that streak alive...all of these games could get very interesting

2A West
24-Mount Pleasant at 1-North Lincoln
5-Forbush at 4-Smoky Mountain
22-Salisbury at 3-North Davidson
10-Ledford at 2-Rutherfordton-Spindale Central
-Observations: Mt Pleasant has won two on the road, toughest test yet Tuesday though, bottom half of the bracket is a do-over of the Central Carolina Conference Tournament with RS Ce. traded in for West Davidson

2A East
9-NC Sch. of Sci. & Math. at 1-Whiteville
12-Providence Grove at 4-South Granville
6-Midway at 3-Randleman
10-West Craven at 2-North Lenoir
-Observations: No one expects NCSSM to compete with Whiteville, but at the same time, no one expected them to get by SWE in the first round...PG & SG looks like a great pitching matchup and one would expect a low scoring game, so watch it turn into a slugfest...Midway and Randleman are two of those programs with a lot of success the past decade or so, like somebody alluded to earlier, those Tigers are tough to beat, especially at their place...WC & NL is the always interesting round three between conference opponents, NL won twice in the regular season to get to host this game, Can they do it again?

3A West
8-Alexander Central at 1-Crest
5-Jesse C. Carson at 4-Marvin Ridge
6-Southwest Guilford at 3-A.C. Reynolds
10-T.C. Roberson at 2-Southeast Guilford
-Observations: Almost all of these teams were "supposed" to be here based on seeds, only missing JMR, who lost to TCR 15-10...I guess both teams were out of pitching, slate full of intriguing matchups, as one would expect in 3rd Rd

3A East
8-West Carteret at 1-New Hanover Co.
5-Ralph L. Fike at 4-Chapel Hill
6-Terry Sanford at 3-Western Alamance
26-Union Pines at 15-Western Harnett
-Shocking to not see a team from Pitt Co. still alive, not only here in 3A, but other classes too, one of those double digit seeds who took out Rose/Conley will be in the 4th Rd

4A West
8-Ardrey Kell at 1-Providence
13-West Forsyth at 5-South Caldwell
14-South Mecklenburg at 11-Ronald Reagan
10-Hickory Ridge at 2-East Forsyth

4A East
17-Middle Creek at 9-Fuquay-Varina
12-Jesse O. Sanderson at 4-Charles E. Jordan
14-Garner at 6-New Bern
15-Apex at 7-Pine Forest
-Observations: I thought having a 1st Rd bye was supposed to be an advantage...look at the seeds in the 4A brackets though...of the 16 still alive, only 7 had a 1st Rd bye...#1,2,3,5,8 in the East are gone...#3,4,6,7 in the West are gone, many teams hosting a 3rd Rd game that many expected to not even be still playing in the 3rd Rd

Tarheelg, Nice job. Please copy and paste in new thread I started for rounds 3 & 4.

Thanks,

OK have a serious question about Maxpreps rankings.

Eastern Randolph lost in first round of playoffs to Nash Central, a team with a much higher ranking. Providence Grove and Randleman have made it to 3rd round in 2A and Union Pines the same in 3A. Those teams continue to rise in latest rankings, which makes sense. However ER has fallen.

Shouldn't "strength of schedule" component everyone talks about be an improvement in ER ranking? The three teams I mentioned ER played a total of 7 games, almost 1/3 of their schedule. Makes sense to me that if that is so important in Maxpreps rankings that it would improve the final ranking of ER?

Sorry I still don't get it
