FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE: Many playoffs delayed by flooding in eastern NC

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors and Commissioner Que Tucker have made the difficult decision to move playoff dates following historic flooding in many parts of eastern North Carolina.

“The logistics of moving the fall championships dates, especially this close to the events are complex; however, we must do everything in our power to do what is best for our student-athletes in the state,” said Commissioner Que Tucker. “Keeping our young people safe as we try to minimize risk of injury must be paramount in our decisions.”

so how about winter sports and the start of their conference play? lot of Basketball and wrestling teams will be affected now.

This just gives us another week to come up with 50 million mock brackets. BBall coaches across the state i am sure are not too happy.

Don't #1 seeds get a 1st round bye? If so that means 3 weeks before their first playoff game. I would hate that if I were a coach

So basically there will just be a bye week between the end of the regular season and the 1st round of the playoffs?

Well I guess it will give the schools a chance to make up games. North edgecombe has played only 5 games and this is week 10 so you may see some weird schedule scenarios.

Tarboro played like 3 games in like 7 or 8 days earlier this year.

Why not just adjust schedules for those teams affected down east? Figure out the minimum games that can be completed by the end of the normal season, and determine seedings based on that, how much of a difference is it going to make anyway? This just screwed us for the Shrine Bowl.

Curious as to others thoughts, with two weeks to prepare for your 1st round game (for most teams) do you think it will allow for more upsets in the first round?

I dont think so as the more talented team has the same amount of time . It will allow teams to get healthy and put the best out there.

My thinking was that the 3/6 games or maybe the 2/7 games could possible upsets because in a two week period a team can put in a whole lot of be stuff. The 1/8 games the better team will win and the 4/5 games are a toss up anyway.

This is actually a blessing in disguise for my Cougars. We will need an extra week to not only prepare for the 2 or 3 seed we are going to be playing, but also for travel arrangements for the 2 dozen fans we will bring to our game in Fayetteville.

:D:D:D That's just funny right there! I still say you will be visiting the Charlotte area!

I can't really say this would be an advantage for anybody except for maybe the east...

West teams will have no idea who they are playing so they can't really prepare for their 1st round game, all they can do is work on themselves.

Down east they keep playing and maybe keep rolling. I don't see the bye week doing the west any favors.

Prayers for all those affected by Hurricane Matthew.

NC and SC will have championships on same day now.

Correct. Due to SC going to five rounds of playoffs they were on the same schedule as NC. They added a week to the season due to the storms before NC.

SC added a week last year due to the floods but were on a four round playoff so they finished the same week as NC.

Hurts the Shrine Bowl overall but it is more fair to the teams to get the game in.

Lol....

That extra week will help those who are trying to get healthy and recover from a few bumps and bruises.

Gonna use this as the * that keeps Crest streak alive of making it to the second week after the regular season ends.

Statement from Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas "the 80th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is still scheduled for Dec. 17. A plan is in place to compensate for players who will miss the Shrine Bowl due to participation in North Carolina state championship games."
