My family lived in WNC for seven years before moving to Texas in 2013. I still keep up with the local Asheville sports because I want see how a lot of the kids that grew up with my boys are performing. My oldest son would have been a senior at Reynolds this year had we not relocated.

The playoff brackets always generate a lot of conversation regarding how teams are seeded and the "rematch" issue. I know there are probably politics at play but at least the NC system has flexibility.

I thought I would describe the Texas process and get your opinions on what you like about each state.

6A (enrollments between 2,100 - 6,000) has 32 districts and 4 schools from each district make the playoffs (128 teams). 64 teams are put into both 6A "big" and 6A "small". This is where it gets a little crazy.

The 1 & 2 teams from each district are split by enrollment into big & small and represent the district as the top seeds. The 3 & 4 teams from each district are split by enrollment into big & small and represent the district as the 2 seeds. So, whether you go big or small is based on the other schools in your district not how you stack up against all schools in the playoffs.

The bracket structure stays the same each year so there is no seeding outside of your respective district standings. You start to get a feel mid-way through the season who your playoff opponent will be. For example:

District 23 - 6A Big #1
District 24 - 6A Big #2

District 23 - 6A Big #2
District 24 - 6A Big #1

District 23 - 6A Small #1
District 24 - 6A Small #2

District 23 - 6A Small #2
District 24 - 6A Small #1

After round one, District 23 wouldn't play a team from either District 23 or 24 until round four (region finals).

I actually prefer the NC method because it splits schools based on overall size and then seeds based on records.

What do you guys think?

Sounds confusing to me lol. I don't mind the system we have right now to be honest. My only complaint would be the split class thing they implemented a decade or so ago where you have a 3a and 3aa champ. For example this year the 3AA west is loaded and has 3-5 state champion caliber teams, whereas the 3a east and west combined has probably 3-5. So you get in these scenarios some times where one champion could beat the other by 30 and they are both "state champions"

Texas does sound confusing, I'm sure I'd figure it out eventually....however it has to be better then NC, we have a 3 win TCR team HOSTING a playoff game against a team from Fayetteville that won 9 games.....crazy!
