Official Catholic @ Weddington Thread

I have seen five teams in person that I think would beat Weddington. Mallard Creek, Dutch Fork, Vance, Richmond, and Gaffney.

I believ MC and DF would run the score up on them.

Vance defense would shut them down but they would not put up a lot of points. The issue in the matchup for Vance may be field position due to the Weddington specialist. Gaffney would be much like Vance with a better O due to the line play.

Richmond would be able to contain on defense and move the ball on O. Would win by a few TDs.

I think Butler and Weddington would be a good game. I lean to Weddington although Butler has more room for improvement. If Butler cuts down on the mistakes, penalties, and dropped passes they would win.

Matchups make games but I can assure you that MC and DF are not in tight contest with AK or PR.

MP seems to be left out of these convos a lot... are we not drinking the kool aid yet with the Mustangs?

Btango I've read your posts for years, you've obviously watched A LOT of high school football, so I have to ask, how does these schools become ranked nationally across America when other teams seem to fall through the cracks? Obviously there is multiple schools that could beat both Weddington and Catholic and yet they barely "at best" crack the top 100...is it because there is just too many high schools to keep track...or leagues, or conferences or classifications etc...?

It is hard to judge and compare when there are so many schools that do not play many, if any, common opponents.

Although Catholic played close games against the two out of state opponents and were blown out by Weddington does not mean those two would lose to Weddington. I don't think we saw the best Catholic 2019 but at their best they are not as good as the last few seasons but I do think they will go deep in the playoffs.

I have always felt that the very best teams in most of the larger states or from larger urban areas can play competitively with one another. With the "super" teams turning up, often for only their senior season, at privates (and some publics) it has changed things a bit. The two teams Catholic lost to are top five in their states by most people I spoke with. I think Weddington is a top ten team in NC.

Catholic lost to Good Counsel of Maryland. They lost by 23 to a California "super" team which only won by one point the following week against a local rival, Servite. Servite lost to Bishop Gorman by over three TDs to start the season. The week before, Gorman lost by two TDs to a Honolulu powerhouse program.

Went to see Joliet Catholic play about 12 years ago in the first round of the Illinois playoffs. Was at Notre Dame the next day and always catch a local high school game. They were ranked top twenty in the nation. Think they lost in the quarterfinal that year but had won several state titles. Would have been may be about fifth best team in Charlotte that season. Looked a lot like Charlotte Catholic and would have been a good matchup.

Don’t let the scores of AK and PR fool you. There was nothing tight about AK as younger players were put in AFTER Weddington being up by 4 scores. In the PR game, the game was tight in the first quarter, then Weddington went up 3 scores. Again, when the game was out of hand, reserves came in to gain experience, just like they have in EVERY game. PR scored a TD on the last play of the game to “tighten” up the score.

Anyway, Idk if Weddington is in the class of RC, MC, Vance, DF, or Gaffney. However, they wouldn’t be scared and all of them would be in a battle. Weddington’s defense is awfully tough and I think they showed Friday they are more than just Shipley on offense.

With their backups in it would have been more than four scores. Not knocking Weddington but I think we are reading a lot more into the point differential than what it is. I expected Weddington to be the team to beat in 3AA. At this point any thing less than a state title is disaster. (Same for Mallard Creek barring injury to the QB.)

The main difference now is that Catholic is a hunter and no longer the hunted. Weddington has a lot of very solid players. Catholic has a lot of question marks especially at QB. Not only the passing game but being a field general and directing players especially a backup. That has been a Catholic strength in the past and the QB could throw it a bit when needed.

The difference maker in the game to me was the specialist! He is a weapon. Average high school kicker / punter I think makes for a different game. It is a mental smack to watch the ball fly over your head every kickoff and start on the twenty. One item that helped Albemarle set national record in the early 2000's. He did knuckle ball one into the end zone. Catholic worked long field and Weddington went short field.

I agree the K/P is a weapon, the best I’ve ever seen. However, that Weddington D is fast and is as good as any in the state. The big stick by 42 on 33 caused a big fumble that gave Weddington a short field. Also, the lateral gave Weddington a short field. The interception by 25 was incredible and gave Weddington a short field. His closing speed is amazing. IMO the Warrior Defense was the deciding factor. CC broke one long run. Other than that, they didn’t sustain any drives.
Just like last year, this team is improving game by game. We still haven’t seen the best from this Weddington team.
Catholic is very fast on defense. But they got worn down. They certainly do not look like championship caliber at this time. However, idk if they lose another conference game this year.

No they would not

Starting at the 20 every possession is a huge advantage. The best Weddington kicker, however, is a walk-on RS Jr. at Iowa. Keith Duncan. the number of his kickoffs in 2015 returned was virtually none. He holds the UC record and the NC record for field goals . Third in NC history for most points scored by a kicker in a career, third and 10th ever for points in a season, most field goals, career (51), most field goals season (22), most consecutive Xpts (104)--next closest is 77....

when you can score 104 TD's and guarantee the 7th point and a touchback after, things are good.

Understatement. The kicking game helped Albemarle establish national records and put up huge points. Rarely in 1A at that time did you see those kickoffs. Rarely punted but when they did it did not require accuracy and only a bomb.

I was at the game against Wisconsin where he had his only missed (may be one other) FG that season. He was a true freshman and a walkon handling all duties. Did not play the last two years but is back now. What was the deal his second and third seasons there?

If you ever get a chance to go to a game at Iowa it is special. Loved the atmosphere and the folks. The wave to the kids in the children's hospital. Great stuff!!!

The strongest leg may have been Matt Wogan. Did not have the accuracy Duncan did but his leg strength was unreal. Great athlete. Spoke to him after the Virginia game at Autzen Stadium in 2016. The Umpire (Mike Morton) for the game had called Marvin Ridge at Porter Ridge Wogan's freshman or sophomore season.

Union County, Charlotte metro, and NC have turned out some impressive kickers.

Reminds me of this:
