Reading the past 3 posts from greydog, kingbluedevil, and packrep1 I reflect on some of the best advice I have heard on this topic and it was from Bobby Bowden to Lou Holtz after his West Virginia team killed Lou's William and Mary's team: "Lou it is not my job to keep the score down".
I too coached for 7 years in the same little league you guys are talking about and have been on the receiving end of having the score run up on me. I can remember a program from north of the Dan in Stokes County run a double reverse pass with a 26-6 lead. Fortunately they did not connect but I told my kids after the game it is not their job to keep the score down. The prior year against the same team with a 30 something lead I had Quan Martin playing offensive guard to keep the score down. Not my job to keep the score down but I did. The same team my last year coaching when they had a big lead (Thanks to the Hundley kid) the last play of the game threw a perfect 40 yard faid for a TD to go up by over 30 points the last play of the game. Again I told my kids it is not their job to keep the score down.
A lot of accusations thrown at the Prowlers over the years and they have always been a talented bunch. Never coached against you packrep1 but went against Fleming for 7 straight years. There were times in the early years when I would be like really??? I remember Zack Manley running for a TD in a 20 plus point win in the last minute of the game. My assistant coaches got upset and questioned why the hell he was running the ball (one confronted Steve after the game) and I had to remind them that it WAS a FB dive and not their job to keep the score down. Other times I felt the score could have been a whole lot worse if the dogs were not called off. Regardless I had always thought Steve ran the organization with class. There was also a time in 07 when we lost in double OT to the Prowlers and IT WAS MY FAULT!!! That is when I felt bad for the kids is when I let them down. Never because a team (even the north of the Dan team) ran the score up on them. That should have the reverse effect if the kids have intestinal fortitude.
As far as the original thread I too wonder what the heck it is for?? Predictions??? It will most likely be ugly tomorrow night. South being void of athletes has a huge problem tackling in "open space" which is what I hear N Surry"s offense creates a lot of. All is not lost at South. The JV team has been competitive winning 3 games and competitive in others with dwindling numbers because of players exhausting their 8 quarters and being moved up to varsity. They had about 14-15 dressed out tonight losing to N Surry by about 10-14 what I heard. I can remember back in 2009 you had a similar situation when teams worried about running the score up on South but they had freshman that year named Zack Singleton, Aron Pensuiglia. Justin Rodgers, Todd Gibbs, Austin Bullard, Danny Smith, Tyler Hawks, and others that built on those experiences and had winning seasons as Jrs and Srs.
My advice to N Surry is the same Bowden gave to Lou Holtz. It is not your job to keep the score down. Run your O and run your D. Show class when you can but it is not your job. That job lies squarely on the kids, coaching staff and most importantly the community at South Stokes.
