North Surry Hire

It's a surprise for sure I wasn't expecting it. I had no clue Lyons even had a masters lol. I'm happy for him though; he got what he always wanted the past 2 years, I've been with him since his 2nd year there so we've went thru a ton so it's gonna be weird not seeing him around.

Have no idea how it's gonna go. We got 2 really solid coordinators that I think would do well. t 1 has HC experience before if he wants it, the other's very old school and does good with his unit. External wise I expect quite a few people will go for it but that makes me nervous as he could change things and I don't wanna see us go off track.

We got talent left so I don't expect us to drop that much. Swartz will be a senior, we got several senior WR's and O lineman and we return a lot of kids on defense who grew a ton last year from start to end; they had 2 shutouts as well which is something we haven't done very much especially not in my 11 years there. We got some solid JV kids coming up and I'm very excited about the next 2 freshman classes. Whoever gets the job will be fine.

Biggest ? for us is who they will pick and how the conference is gonna go in 2020. Realignment may be a saga..

Hate to see him go, I guess I was at his last game. He has matured and become a good coach. You guys will miss him.

Where was coordinator a head coach at?

We all will; I know he'll be around he's a lot like muah in how much he loves NS football. He's gonna be a good principal though he's got that side to him, the kids never messed around with him. He's the one who gave me a shot though I'll miss him an extra bit due to that. He let me do staff stuff when I was playing JV when I tore my knee up and missed a year; I got my first taste of it then.

Coach Taylor HC'ed down in Georgia for a few years at a private school. Never really asked him much about it but he knows his stuff, he's runs the offense and the kids love him. He'd the best in terms of continuity, either him or the weight lifting coach. He was JV HC for a few years including our '17 season and he knows his defense. I would say our D coordinator but I don't think he wants it.

Outsider wise I'd have to wait and see on who it is; I'd hate to see our system go away because the kids have made great strides with it. I O wise we had our best year passing it last year and on D they went from being very young to being a very hard headed D in a short time. Minus the 4 really good squads we played I felt we were mostly good after we got rid of the growing pains. JV wise the screwed up weather hurt them as well as the QB having to move up a few games but they fought hard and overcame a ton to get what they got I don't think they will lose that scrappiness.

There’s a certain guy from across the creek that if interested would be a top pick. I would find it hard to believe Kelly holder isn’t in this conversation . Not to say coach holder is interested , but it would be a homecoming and a unique challenge with a program that has talent year in and year out but has never in my eyes lived up to expectations. If I was the hounds I would be after holder HARD.

Good timing I just finally got the schedule sans our scrimmages (guess we are still on the fine details with the replacement team since North Wilkes ran away. No idea if we have RJR on either. Scrimmages can wait.) Anyways:

1. Alleghany (Endowment)
2. @ Elkin
3. East Surry
4. Open Date (MUCH better placement)
5. @ Mount Airy
6. Walkertown*
7. North Forsyth*
8. @ Forbush*
9. West Stokes*
10. Surry Central*
11. @ Atkins*
12. @ Carver*

Non conference wise it went like I figured it would. We didn't want to drop you guys after signing the paperwork and us scrimaging last year (you all did us a major solid after the weather ruined our East Wilkes/RJR scrimmage and neither would make it up,) so we just moved you all up to fill in for North Forsyth. It all works out as we hosted NF in '17 so we could just fill you guys in and not lose anything from the past 2 years. Only bummer is we aren't doing JV in Sparta so I will wait another year to come up there.

Conference wise is kind of a suprise though. It starts and ends with Forsyth schools. I like it though, first game gives the kids a solid chance at redemption after they didn't play their best vs Walkertown in either game. Then we got NF off the bat. West's 4th up and that's the perfect spot for them. We end with Atkins and Carver so those two will be more than likely quite cold. At least we aren't their homecoming no more.

Gotta play them on Halloween night next year.. trick or treat.

Any word on interviews or have they got their man???!!! Everybody else is getting organized and hitting the weight room really hard!

Still nothing yet. I ask around all the time but they are keeping it quiet. If I had to guess they were waiting for Basketball to finish. Badgett's more patient than Goins was in that way. The 2 coordinators are running after school stuff so the kids aren't being wasted, plus we have a good # of kids in the weightlifting classes. Seen several of the JV kids and they are looking in shape.

Hopefully something will happen this week or next. I'm ready to get it over with so I can get my schedule and planning ready for the summer.

Without a teaching slot, they are able to wait as long as they wish. They could use the coaching to attract a particular subject area teacher if needed. It is hard to find teachers in core areas. If they get this right, they hire someone who can help them in the classroom... Worse case scenario...they wait...end up hiring someone within. Either way, they will be fine.

Very much so. That's what I've told everyone the fine details are as important as the grand scheme. From what I understand we had a good wad of folks apply like I figured we would. That's a great thing on the cap of the last 2 HC's we have had. The program's in better shape than it has been in my time there.

Having a principal and AD who have been head coaches before is a nice thing to have for a school as they have been on both sides. Not many schools can say that.

I think so; I'm very excited for the next few years.

I'm thrilled to all high's. Coach Taylor was the best possible pick in terms of continuity for us. He's been with North since my senior year and has done everything and deserves the shot. The fact he got when we had a ton of guys apply is awesome it shows a lot of good when you have that much interest.

Ready for spring practice now and to get back to work.
