North Davidson vs Cummings

I would have preferred to play St Pauls. Cummings is a soon to be ghost when Alamance / Burlington Schools redistricts and builds the new high school. Bye bye Cummings and Graham.

How does Cummings travel? My gut feeling, and I could be wrong, but I anticipate a crowd about like what First Flight brought. About 50 people.

They don't travel well.

Even when they were really good, they only traveled for big games. So they would have traveled well to North if they were good. They may bring less than first flight.

I was born around that time but my father told me about those teams. He went to a game back in the day between HP Andrews and Cummings when both were powerhouses.

Honestly even though the computers are supposed to take sos into account I feel like the playoffs are even more watered down this year. Maybe I'm wrong, just my opinion.

2AA East is as weak as I can imagine, I thought Randleman and S Granville would be in there also... when they were placed in small 2A, it honestly made it weaker than our (CCC) conference slate. Oak Grove, without a senior class, would have gone to the third round if they could avoid Ledford, SWE and North Davidson.

Well, if they could have played 2AA. their numbers were a very firm 2A.

What anot West Craven?

I thought about throwing them in there with the other three... but I decided not to. west craven doesn’t look all that great to me on paper, or from looking at their schedule.

The East is a three horse race. ND, LED and SWE.

I’d love to hear from someone from Alamance County about where they stand in the redistrictimg / new school / closing schools.

Got to see them once as a kid, read about them in the USA Today sports. This was during the USA Today high school rankings before HS football got big on the internet. Their offense was ahead of it's time in high school, as alot of teams didn't know how to defend it and the talent level was offr the meter at every position.

Cummings winning a playoff game was obviously a huge surprise ... but perhaps the Mid-State 2-A isn't as weak as suspected?

Cummings played a tough non-conference schedule that included Lee County along with the strong 3-A teams from Alamance County - Eastern, Western and Southern.

Carrboro, the other Mid-State team to make the playoffs, held highly-ranked Ledford to a 7-0 game through the first half last week.

All that said, Cummings will be a welcome second-round foe for the team from Welcome.

You can't imagine how good they were in the late 80s. They did things most schools had never seen. Spread offense with dayglow stripes on the balls. Throwing to spots vs players. Complex defensive schemes. I wittnessed it first hand.

Redistricting is done. The new high school will be built. Probably opening no earlier than the fall of ‘21. My opinion only is that Cummings will still have teams but I’m not so sure about Graham. I’m not sure that’s been decided. I’ll ask around. My contacts are pretty good.

Gathered a little more info... so here’s the deal... as I knew, no schools are closing, 1 additional high school is being built. Graham & Cummings will be magnet schools. Both Graham and Cummings will field teams in every sport where there is demand from the students that will support fielding a team. That being said... with Cummings becoming a school of the arts & Graham being more of a trade school... I think both will field athletic teams but not necessarily football. This actually makes me think Graham is more likely than Cummings to have football. Both could, neither could.
Fall of ‘21 still a guess as to the opening of the new school which will be in the Southeast of the County roughly speaking. No idea how it will be opened in terms of which grades when opens & grandfathering. Much of that is still TBD.
In other words, we’ll see. Clear as mud?

Thanks! Time will tell, but I appreciate the info. Always interesting to watch these kinds of things play out. It was fun to see our new Davidson county high school’s process to opening last year.

Those schools are only 2.2 miles apart. Don't need them both. I think they were in different school systems when Cummings opened.
Waste of money to keep them both in business.

Wonder what size (ADM) the new school will be?

I agree with you. Under the current system, they are really close together. Cummings is actually the most recently built school in the county. They are both staying open although repurposed (for lack of a better word). Growth in certain areas of the county could see them change & be full up again. Time will tell how this plan works out. To answer your question, the new school is projecting at 1250 once it is full up & running. I think it will have room for 1500.

As for the game this Friday, I think North Davidson will cruise.

66-7 North Davidson wins. Unreal that this is a 2nd round game in the playoffs, embarrassing. A game like this does not challenge North Davidson to improve and prepare them for the real test to come. This is no blame on ND mind you, they must play who is put in front of them and they more than handled their business. They came ready and got it done. Good job by the staff and especially the boys. But what a waste of time.

I was thinking the same thing...geez,there's a lot of lopsided games tonight

The level of uneducated fans in the stands never ceases to amaze me. The guy behind me clearly hadn’t been paying attention, as he kept telling everyone around him, “this is Cummings, man... the big time!”. I skipped out at half time only to hear the doofuses on 99.9 telling everyone listening that SWE would have been the 1 seed in the east had TARBORO not upset them in the last game of the year. (And misquoted the final score as 15-14). SWE is a good ball club, but there were NOT the favorite in that game.

Thankful for this forum and the vast majority of posters who know at least a little something about NC HS football!

Well, it was actually 62-7;) but who's counting?! I know one thing, those Cummings fellas are going to be really sore on Saturday morning. About 30 minutes before kickoff, the Cavs players decided during warm ups that they were going to go to the "ND" in the middle of the field and stomp on it and tear it up with their cleats. All in full view of the ND players and coaches. Credit to the ND players for keeping their calm, but WHOA NELLY did they pay for it in the game. You could clearly see that the tackles were a little bit harder, and the blitzes on the QB were a little bit faster. All the poor kids on the Cummings offense took an absolute beating. Maybe they'll learn something from this.:)
