OK. It's finally here. Playoffs. Unfortunately, Week 1 is a lot of yawns and blowouts as too many teams that have no business in a playoff get one more game. Bottom line, it is money week for the NCHSAA. I appreciate and respect the job this organization does, but this is about an extra week of revenue. The true playoffs don't start until Week 2 once the pretenders have been weeded out. A little harsh but also reality. Hopefully, all teams stay healthy for when it gets real.

Is this year the last year of this format in the playoffs? Multiple times the last few years, my Asheville high cougars have played schools in the playoffs that have more male students than we do total students. Marvin ridge this week will as well.

Yes playoffs will be different next year with 8 classifications. Excluding the Big 32, I would imagine most other classes will have 32 team playoff brackets, 16 teams in the west and 16 teams in the east. That is just a guess.

You do realize it's the coaches and AD that chose this amount of teams in the playoffs. What do you want the NCHSAA to do? Go against what they wanted and voted for? Not being smart ,but it's just like when the NCHSAA has been wanting 6 divisions for years but people are blaming them for the 8 we are about to have.

Perhaps a ready, fire, aim comment. I will also state that I am a big supporter and fan of the NCHSAA, Que Tucker and what they do. To the extent that the Board of Directors is made up of NC school administrators and athletic directors, you are right. Regardless, the first week of the NC playoff is still a revenue grab. A few decent matchups in the first round but most of the games will be blowouts with a few running clocks in the mix.

I actually thought this was some of the best 1st round match-ups in a while. When you look at all classifications. I don't see there being as many blowouts(my opinion). One of our local teams in 3A was co-conference champion and ended up with 13 seed and first round game against a 7-3 team that just won a state 2 years ago. Also in 4A you have Mt tabor and independence I believe. So I think there are going to be some really good 1st round and several lower seeds beating higher seeds. Not sure if any very lower seeds can be a Cinderella story this year, but its definitely always possible. 'Any giving Friday night', is my thought process when dealing with kids and high school football, you just never know until they line up and play.
