Although I would be the first one on the boards to pick Hibriten to repeat as the 2AA State Champion, and fully think the adjusted Max Preps rankings leave us all pretty much shell shocked, I would also be the 1st to say that what any team did last year should not be taken into consideration. Now I realize that it has to be, for the first polls released based on returning talent and last years performance. I am far from a Pisgah fan but if you only take this year into consideration, their strength of schedule has given them the right to take the #1 seed for this years playoffs.
As a Mtn. Heritage fan, most of us realized early in the year, especially after the MItchell game, that we would get no further love from the rankings because of our remaining strength of schedule. It was just how the cards fell this year. I assume the same thing has happened to Hibriten this year and their conference is really down (or may have been for some time now). That is why both of our teams got little respect in the final rankings. We did have 1 loss to #14 in 3A Erwin this year, but even if we won that game, we may have jumped Reidsville for the #2 spot in the playoffs, but would not have had the resume' to pass Randelman I do not believe.
It appears to have the statewide respect or at least on the adjusted rankings, Heritage needs to get into the Mountain 6 conference and Hibriten needs to try to get into the conference with Shelby and South Point. Our conference has been down for a few years and if it had been stronger, we may have gotten to host Reidsville at our place last year instead of traveling.
Now with all this said I do believe Pisgah will hit a wall and Hibriten will get to host the West Regional anyways so it will all play out. If my Cougars are not still playing, I would love to make that trip and get to see Hibriten play.
