In February of 1981 Lexington was ranked #3 and North Davidson#1 in the 3A poll. They met on a Friday night in Welcome in the old gym affectionately know as the Crackerbox . What unfolded was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in High School sports. Over an hour before the tip the Fire Marshall locked the doors letting no one else in. The stands, around the court and the lobby were packed. Many locked out would not be deterred so they climbed the school roof and watched the game thru the large windows behind the Visitors side of the gym. It was hard for the ball to be thrown in bounds there was so many people. Coach Larry Wall's Jackets with Chip Anderson, Jake Welborn, and Kenny "the Thrill" Hill edged Pete Jones Black Knights featuring Charles "Punkin" Douthit, Gary Leonard, and David Rhodes going down to the last play. With these teams playing for 1st place 39 years later thought a good time to reminisce, Mistermean if you can find the article about this game in the Dispatch archives I would appreciate you posting it on here. With all the junk going on about hitting refs and fights in the stands etc it would be nice to see one of those magical nights in high school sports revisited.
