Let's talk hoops

The season is winding down as most teams are in the final stretch of 4- 5 games.
I think 1A in the West is loaded again. You have Hayesville in the Mountains undefeated, Pine Lake and Mountain Island playing well in the Mooresville Area, Lincoln Charter and Christ the King in SPC, North Stanly looks good again, Mount Airy must be back to their standards as they are undefeated in conference play. Should be a fun playoff. In the East, all I have is Henderson Collegiate. I haven't seen any other team in the East that can match their athletics. Plus, they play a loaded schedule.
In 2A, Shelby is undefeated, Forest Hills looks strong again, Pisgah in the Mountains have only 1 loss, Patton looks like the favorite in their conference, RS Central and West Caldwell are playing well, Hendersonville is always tough, North Lincoln looks to be the favorite in Denver....As for the East, I say Farmville Central and South Granville are the only 2 I see coming out of east.
That is my take on 1A and 2A...Let's hear some other opinions.

I don't know that there's much enthusiasm on here for talking 1A hoops any more--at least beyond the conference level.

But I'll bite because I just can't help but talk basketball.

Would point out for your 1A West list that Chatham Charter is undefeated again. I doubted them on here last year because of their weak conference and how they'd come into their playoff game with Hayesville the year before with a great record and lost to a bunch of freshmen and sophomores...and then they made me look foolish when they beat Hayesville and Lincoln Charter and gave W-S Prep all they wanted in the Regional Final, so I'm not going to doubt them again. They lost their star big man, but I really liked the Golden kid last year, too, and he returns, and it looks like a couple of sophomores have really broken out this year to fill the void.

No further comment on 1A West, other than to say I really wish we could've seen what Hayesville could have done with the kids that left for Georgia, but now I'm rooting for the kids that stayed to seize the chance to prove the program is more than one or two kids. Kind of like '02 Mount Airy after Wake signee Richard Joyce transferred. Not saying they'll win the title like that Mount Airy team, but hope springs eternal and all that.

As far as 1A East, I think Henderson Collegiate is definitely the heavy favorite, but I think there are a few teams that could make things interesting for them.

Granville Central did take a bad loss to a very good 2A South Granville team that's led by Louisville commit Bobby Pettiford, but it's their only loss so far and I think we'll have a better idea of what that means for the 1A bracket after South Granville plays Burlington School tomorrow (always some risk in comparing scores, but considering Henderson Collegiate lost to Burlington School by 30, then if South Granville can hang with Burlington School I think there's a decent chance Henderson Collegiate wouldn't have fared any better against South Granville than Granville Central did). Granville Central is going to be pretty-well tested coming out of a 1A/2A split conference with some good 2A teams (South Granville, Webb, Bunn), they have an impressive blowout win over 6-3 4A Rolesville in non-conference play, and they'll have one of the best players in the 1A bracket in Appalachian State commit Terence Harcum running the show.

Edenton Holmes also gave Henderson Collegiate good games in the playoffs the last two years and is off to an 8-1 start.

Riverside is 7-0 and has a 6-7 kid with a couple of DI offers and could be tough.

Princeton is undefeated and is absolutely killing people, including a double digit win over 6-3 3A Clayton.

I've been wrong before, but as far as boys are concerned I don't see any team out of the SMC making much noise. Our conference is the weakest from top to bottom that I believe I have saw it in years. We really don't have any outstanding teams
Victim of circumstance, add McTaggart and McClure to Hayesville, Ellis, Holloway and Martin to Andrews, Groenewold to Swain and Smith to Murphy and it goes from one of the weakest in recent years to one of the best in recent years in my opinion.

At this point though that is moot. I do agree it would have been different if circumstances had been different, but they're not. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is. It is a conference of mediocre teams at this point, and that includes our only undefeated team

I guess the glass-half-full of it is that there's only one bad team--and let's be honest, there are years where there are several bad teams in the SMC--and the parity among the other six makes the conference race interesting. Lots of good games, and things are more interesting than recent years when the top one or two teams just beat everyone else by 30. So I'm enjoying that there is a season and that the games are pretty good.

One thing that I believe has actually helped Hayesville though is more opportunity for Kolbe Ashe. If Hayesville can keep games close in the playoffs Ashe has an uncanny ability to close games out. Some conference opponents have seen when its been like in a close game late. Like when he had 32 points at Robbinsville with 12 in the fourth quarter or when they played Andrews, he had 30 points with 14 in the fourth quarter. In some ways Hayesville is actually better without the two that left. They play better team ball and better team defense, now their ceiling would be higher but they have been fantastic either way. Despite his size I am not sure Hayesville will play a team until deep in the playoffs with a player better than Ashe. Often times in high school basketball the team with the best individual player wins, especially when that player is a point guard.

I think this Hayesville team is very similar, personnel-wise, to the 2012 Hayesville team that made it to Greensboro--talented point guard who can score, with a scrappy, experienced, and unselfish (but undersized) supporting cast. But they still have a few areas where they could improve before I would consider them on par with that team. I am pretty confident they will be able to take care of the ball and dictate the tempo they want against most teams they'll meet, and if they're shooting well could a tough out.

It's been really rough not being able to attend games. I've seen a few teams on Youtube but it's just not the same.

In my area, it looks like we have a few teams that could make some noise. In 4A, the NW Guilford girls look strong again. In 3A, Dudley, Northern Guilford, and Asheboro girls are looking sharp. In 2A, TW Andrews is tough again (along with Randleman). So is North Davidson. They still have their dynamic duo of Hege and McMillan.

On the guys side, Northern Guilford looks really tough. Mt. Tabor seems to be doing well again. In 2A, North Davidson's having a great year.

I wish I could analyze things better but I just haven't seen anything. These are crappy times.
