Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the JV for basketball 9, 10 graders? Does anybody know why we play 11 graders on JV. I got to watch last 2 games and I was little shocked. I think 3 or 4 start and 2 are first one off bench. Personally how does that get them ready for varsity some are really good could come give varsity kids a break especially with all we had going on? I guess I'm just confused about this decision.

I’ve never understood it either. This year we have a lot of freshman and they are getting very little if not any reps on JV!

Anyone grades 9-12 can play jv ball. Several reasons exist for this, coaches may have low numbers and need upperclassman to field a team. They may have a large senior class and have some juniors who will contribute next year that need more experience. The jv team may be short a crucial position player, such as a point guard. The coach just wants to win.

Who does your 9th grade team play? Do they play Jv also? Must be a big class, which is unusual for a 1A. The last big class I remember was the oldest Cottrell brother’s class at Hayesville that started with 12 freshmen. 8 of those guys stayed in all 4 years.

I’ve noticed for Cherokee it’s become accustomed to move up and start freshmen. It has been happening for a few years. I know they are not the only ones. But the girls team has very young kids every year. For the most part they do contribute and not necessarily hurt the team. Though I have seen 11th grade kids playing JV. I mean those kids are getting to play more and they weren’t as talented as the under class kids but I’ve always assumed once you hit upper class you can almost guarantee a spot on Varsity. Especially for small 1a. I get it, it’s not the worst thing but if I was an upper classman it could feel disheartening.

We have a freshman team that plays mainly on Sat. Sometimes with a game during the week. Than our JV team has mainly juniors and some additional freshman but what I don't understand is juniors aren't getting better playing down and we have low # on Varsity right now with everything going on. I guess it just doesn't make sense to me anyway.

Can’t deny Cherokee girls success with that happening so I can’t knock it

Doesn't bother me for kids to play up but I have a problem with kids playing down that are decent and could get some minutes on varsity.

Who does Rosman's freshman team play against? With this and the plans to field essentially a freshman football team, Rosman looking to operate like a 3A school.

Juniors on JV for basketball is common in states that have 5 and 6 quarter rules, like TN and GA. Not as common in NC, but not unheard of.

I think this is first time we have done this. We're just looking to give our kids something extra. I think it's great.
