This is week two of 4AA West, otherwise known as the Greater Charlotte Invitational. As happens every year, this region is loaded with great games.

Hough (9-3) at Independence (12-0)

This game is a rematch of an earlier game on September 19. Independence won that one 27-17. Hough is scoring 33.58 ppg and giving up 23.17 ppg. Independence is scoring at 40.67 ppg clip, while their defense is giving up a very stingy 7.08 ppg.

Last week Hough defeated West Forsyth 45-17, while Independence shut out Olympic for the second time 35-0.

This is another heavy weight bout, with both teams involved in a slugfest. Will it go 12 rounds? I don't know, but Independence should move on. Independence by 10

Ardrey Kell (9-3) at Lake Norman (11-1)

This will be the first time these teams meet. Ardrey Kell is scoring 32.58 ppg and giving up 20.25 ppg. Lake Norman is scoring 41.25 ppg while allowing 19.75 ppg. Lake Norman has 9 wins in a row, including last week's playoff opener against West Charlotte 35-7.

Ardrey Kell's schedule strength is 21.9 as opposed to 14.8 for Lake Norman.

That win last week for Lake Norman was the Wildcats' first playoff win. They are 1-7 in playoff competition. Ardrey Kell presents some good news and bad news for Lake Norman regarding their playoff history. The good news is, the Knights are average in the playoffs at 4-4. The bad news is when they aren't playing Mallard Creek, they are 4-0. After a slow start against a better than their record looks Page team, Ardrey Kell went on for a 28-16 win.

This game could very well be a slugfest. Ardrey Kell can't afford another slow start. Because of Lake Norman quarterback Josh Ladowski and playing at home, look for Lake Norman to get playoff win number two. Lake Norman by 2

Butler (9-2) at Mallard Creek (11-1)

This match is the super heavyweight bout in the west and the state. There aren't enough superlatives to describe this matchup. These teams met earlier on August 29,with Butler prevailing 28-27.

Since 2008, Butler has a record of 90-10 and Mallard Creek 85-8. Between them, these two teams boast 4 state titles since 2009. Mallard Creek is the defending state champion. These teams have played each other 7 times, with Butler holding a 4-3 edge.

Butler scores 46.83 ppg while giving up 18.75 ppg. Mallard Creek is scoring 42.08 ppg and allowing 17.67.

Butler has two losses, but those losses were to teams with a combined record of 22-1. They lost to Richmond in overtime 55-54 and two weeks ago to Independence 34-28.

Mallard Creek has won 27 of their last 28 games. They haven't lost at home since 2010.

This is going to be a big time slugfest. I look for Mallard Creek to even things up, but barely. Mallard Creek by 2

Providence (9-3) at East Forsyth (11-1)

The good news for these teams is one of them will move on. The bad news is the winner will face the Butler/Mallard Creek winner.

Providence comes into this game after a 34-15 playoff opening win over Northwest Guilford. In fact, Northwest Guilford is the only common opponent for these teams. East Forsyth took the measure on November 7, 36-13. Last week East Forsyth opened their playoff run with a 59-14 win over McDowell.

Providence is scoring 31 ppg and giving up 16.25 ppg. East Forsyth is scoring 46.75 ppg and allowing 19.92 ppg. The schedule strength for Providence is 22 and 14.1 for East Forsyth.

These teams last met in 2012, with East Forsyth winning 42-7.

East Forsyth's record against teams from Charlotte is 9-13. This is going to be a good test for both teams, as East begins more than likely their Charlotte gauntlet. East Forsyth by 9

Butler and Mallard Creek have faced off 6 times with a 3-3 split.

Butler won twice in 2012 and earlier this season, while Mallard Creek won in 2011 and twice in 2013.

Butler's 3 wins are the only three wins that anyone in the state has over Mallard Creek since 2011. Since 2008, the only teams in the state who have beaten Mallard Creek at all are Butler, Page, Vance and Indy.
