And quite a few non seniors that are playing key positions and getting it done. A year of maturity has helped this team for sure. They still are not immune to lack of focus and discipline as seen during the first half against Cummings before blowing them out. Big time win by the raiders.
Does HPA still have the same coach? I remember just last year how all the Red Raider faithful were giving him the business, even though he guided the team to a state championship just the year before. Made it seem like the kids did it on sheer talent alone.
Andrews still has the same coach. Great guy, great football mind, but has struggled in consistently getting kids on the same page during his tenure. What I mean is that many folks, both Raider fans and other respected football leaders here locally, believe Andrews has left a few state title opportunities on the table due to lack of discipline, organization, etc in the last 5-6 years. Andrews is a tough gig. Inner city kids with tremendous talent but need some extra TLC but once they buy in, they'll run through a brick wall for you.
Same coach SWE. I've stated before I like him as a man and a program builder but the in game adjustments and sometimes lax discipline (players and coaches alike--we had to forfeit all wins last year because of coach and/or AD not doing their job with clerical things) is maddening. The state championship team you saw was actually less talented than the previous year's team that imploded with a comfortable lead against Salisbury in the playoffs. By my observation we should have won three more titles over the last eleven years. The talent is always there. How it's managed and developed is another thing entirely.
That seems to be the recurring theme concerning complaints of him...discipline.
He's a great person but his game management leaves a lot to be desired, as said with the Salisbury game his clock management was horrid. That team should have brought home a ring
The meltdown against Salisbury (blowing a 3 td lead with 10 minutes left in the game) and the terrible game management overall given our talent level that year was kind of the straw that broke the camels back for a lot of folks. I can be critical of McKoy as others on this board are, but there are still die hard fans that haven't been back to a game since that debacle. As mentioned above, that team was significantly better than the team that won the state title a year later. Andrews teams have also routinely been penalized nearly 8-10 times per game most games for what I consider controllable penalties. Late hits and things like that happen in the heat of battle. However, routine procedure penalties and delay of games at the rate we have seen under McKoy's staff has been less than desirable. Those are just Some of the things that feed into the dialogue you see from time to time. Regardless, this team is playing well right now after laying an egg in an opening game loss to a SW Guilford team that they would beat handily at this point in the season. There's a ton of room for improvement but I like the progression. Go raiders!
