Goldsboro should be in the 2A East bracket. Appears they were left out for some reason. 2-3, 5-5 wildcard.

Either R-S Central or East Rutherford (3-5, 5-5) should be removed. It is based on conf winning pct.

Only possible explanation might be that they opted out.

So did the injuries leave them with only ten players? Because I can't see how the brass at Goldsboro would do that to the other kids on the team. You're just gonna give up because some of your players are hurt? Did Goldsboro not have a JV team this year? Opting out because of injuries? That's....wow. They weren't 1-10 going against a juggernaut like they do in 1A. They were 5-5! They have proven that they can win games. I have no ties to the Goldsboro Cougars, but if this is why they aren't in the playoffs, then I am appalled. I would love to hear from some of the staff, parents, and other supporters of their program.

I agree. Unless they only have a handful of players left, this is a terrible decision by their leadership to not give the kids a chance to play in a playoff game. What are you teaching the kids? When things get tough, you just quit and don't compete.

The NCHSAA changed the rules a few years ago. You can opt out if you let them know before the brackets are set. They put in the rule after an 0-11 team (maybe 1-10, not sure, but a very weak team) got in one year in 1-A and lost something like 75-0 to the top seed, with a few kids getting hurt. They had already turned in their uniforms thinking the season was over, and the NCHSAA told them they had to play or be fined. It was so ridiculous that they put in the opt-out provision the next year.

I don't know the specifics about Goldsboro's situation, but they did play their last game of the regular season on a third-string QB called up from JV, and lost 56-0. So they may have just been banged up so badly they that they had no chance as a low seed in the first round.

If a coach feels like his 5-5 team has no chance, then I question his balls. You play with what you have and believe in your team. Those guys must be thinking "coach thinks we suck." I wonder if the players had a say. Did the coaching staff ask the players if they wanted to play? If it did, and the boys said no, then that's one thing. But if the staff opted out on their own without running it by the players, then I hope that they are shown the door.

I am Sterling Dodson and the starting Middle Linebacker for GHS. We were not appointed about this or anything. I was doing all of the math and schedule comparisons throughout last week and I knew we had earned a spot in the playoffs. My head coach, Bennett Johnson, then started saying that he didn't do such a thing and other coaches began to say that we didn't make it because of our conference record, but we had a pretty decent of not above average schedule.... So I know the some coaches were lying about coach Johnson not opting out.

So basically the coach is teaching never finish what you start. And I am the decision-maker and you players are not important. OOOOOOOKKKKKK.

Your schedule doesn't matter. It's wins and losses that do. You can have 10 or 11 middle schools on your schedule, but if u win enough games, you're in. And Goldsboro did enough to get in as a wild card. Its been confirmed that the head man at GHS called and opted out. If a coach opts out, then that means that he knew that there was a possibility of getting in. Why tell them to take your name out if you don't think you are getting in? Dude, y'all were in there. Might have been as a 14, 15, or 16 seed, but I can't think of any team that has won a championship without playing at all. Your coach took a special opportunity away from you and your teammates. Win or lose, just having the experience is something that you can have for the rest of your life. And it was taken away. Smh. And who knows what would have happened on the field? Goldsboro could have whooped some tail.

I wanna punch this guy right in the throat. I really do. Just to be clear, what was told to the players was that you didn't make it?

I was told that we didn't make it because we went 2-3 in conference play and didn't score but only 14 points our last 3 games.

I had a youth team with 17 players to start the season. Mid season I had 15. One game was over a holiday weekend and 5 never showed and went on vacations. I played that game with 10 players and a middle linebacker at QB. Got beat like a dog but we played the game. Goldsboro coach needs administrative direction or a change of scenery. Second year coach and this is how he builds a program? Not good to lose the respect of the team.

They put point total into it??? Wowwwww. Yeah ummm, we didn't make the playoffs because we didn't score enough points over our last three games. Dude, holler at your teammates and tell them that your coach gave up on you and didn't even give y'all the opportunity to try. The way I see it, he was ready to quit. Was probably done before the Greene Central game, but knew that he HAD to show up.

The thing that hurts the most is that it was my senior season and I had the opportunity taken away from me. No say on the decision, no opinions, nothing.... It kills to have to live the rest of my life knowing that my head coach my senior season took the opportunity away from me.

This thread should be shared with the school and athletic administration of Goldsboro high school. If things are exactly as they have been conveyed on this thread then the head coach at Goldsboro high school should be fired and any others who took part in this pathetic display of leadership. (Lack of leadership)

I agree. There hold be some sort of investigation as to why this happened. I'm sure the athletic department won't be too thrilled about missing out on money. With them most likely playing at a high seed, that home team most likely fills the stands, because people always show up when their team is good. So Goldsboro would have come out on the positive side of the financial equation once they got their share of the gate.

I've always heard and believed the saying "be sure your sin will find you out". I guess whoever made that call didn't realize that others are watching so closely and would bring it to light so soon.

After reading this thread, I am blown away that a head coach even has the power to do this by without some kind of sign off or majority vote from the rest of the team. I understand the head coach gets to make big decisions such as this, but in a situation like this, the players should have a say in the matter. If they couldn't produce enough players or the kids didn't want to play, sure - opt out and give someone else chance to play. But don't lie and deprive the kids of an opportunity that they can never get back. If I was a senior player for Goldsboro, me and the rest of the team would have that coaches head next week...

Coach Johnson called a meeting for all of the football players and said he did it out of frustration due to injuries, because a few players were arguing with coaches and a few players taking themselves out..... I myself, don't think that was a logical excuse.... He then apologized, I walked out before he even got through with it.... He then told everybody he was sorry and he told the freshman qb to take this as a lesson.. I don't know what he means by a "lesson". Then a coach said we weren't even playoff worthy.... But there was a coach or two that didn't know a thing about this because he was outcasted.

What possible lesson could a freshman qb take from this? Get better or we will quit again next year? Wow. What a loser. Hopefully you guys will turn out to be the bigger men in this ordeal and use this a motivational tool. No matter how terrible the odds are, you don't quit. Your odds are always zero when you don't try.

Once again, if this is true, where is the leadership at Goldsboro High? This man should lose his job immediately and it's almost negligible at this point if any member of administration is accepting of this man's actions. His lack of judgement, truthfulness and leadership is unacceptable.

Absolutely right, SWE. Sounds like the coaching staff has unreasonable expectations or was looking for a scapegoat for not being able to coach the team. Last year, East Rowan was the 15 seed in the 3A West with a 5-6 record. They travelled to Morganton and upset #2 Freedom, then beat 7 seed West Henderson, before losing to South Point

WOW. I would think that the AD and the Principal would have to sign off on a decision like that. If I was a parent of a player on the team I would be extremely upset. I just looked at their roster and 80 kids on roster and 14 seniors. Seriously Coach! 14 kids you took their last game. Schools in the PAC 6 do not have 60 kids on Varsity and JV together. We wished we had that many. Come on man.

Coach needs a new job. He has lost the respect of the team. Maybe he was planning on looking anyway and just wanted to end the season. Basically he is a quitter when times get tough.

I am the mother of Senior, Sterling Dodson and Junior, Rodney Dodson of Goldsboro High. I am absolutely appalled by this act from the coach. My boys are preparing for college, and they were pushing for playoffs to be on there records. I don't care who you are, you do not mess with someone's potential future. The coach/and or coaches that were involved with this decision, should be ashamed of themselves . You have taken away so much from these kids. Even if they go in to play the first playoff game, and they lose, it's still on record that they were in playoffs. The coach does not even seem to want to be there, because last year after the season was over he applied for another coaching job at a different school. The boys on this team have played their hearts out for this coach, and then he goes and stabs them in the back. You opted out because of frustration, really? I am sure the boys were frustrated out on the field at times, but they still played, they did not quit! And as far as it being said that the players for Goldsboro were not playoff worthy, how about the coach that made that statement, you're not coach worthy!

Don't mess with a momma.

We played Goldsboro and they are a member of our confrence. When we played they gave it all they had and left it out on the feild. Not sure what happened but really really bad deal for the seniors..... I would bet money right now that the coach if he did have anything to do with this action is wishing he had not taken this action

Wow, somehow I missed this all week until Thursday morning....points scored though??? If it was Monday Night Countdown, it would be time for #ComeOnMan...amount of points scored (or allowed) has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with tie breaking procedures for making the playoffs in high school (yea yea points scored might be the 5th tiebreaker to qualify for the NFL playoffs)...and some competent number crunching would have showed that 2-3 in conference with a 5-5 overall record absolutely had a team in the hunt, and for all intents and purposes locked in going into Friday's game...and of course one poster above made a good point in remarking that there was no need to make the call and opt out if one did not think they had a shot to be in

My nephew is the starting OLB for SW Edgecombe. I'll tell him to dedicate a tackle to Goldsboro High School tonight, from one Cougar Nation to another.

My nephew is starting RB for Providence Grove I will tell him to get a extra yard for them boys in Goldsboro that was not given that opportunity. Patriots Football

This will probably cost the coach his job and rightfully so but also at fault is the NCHSAA. They have a procedure in place for opting out of the playoffs and for some unknown reason they didn't follow it. Paperwork has to be completed & turned in by a specified date and must contain four signatures including the superintendent and principal's. I understant the coach requested, after the last game, for the AD to send an email to NCHSAA telling them he had too many injuries and was opting out, this was after the deadline had passed. They have a brand new superintendent & don't you know he just loves this kind of bad publicity in his first month or so on the job. Also, making the playoffs has no bearing on college transcripts, in 1-A and 2-A almost everyone makes the playoffs. It is sad because that is one thing kids strive for when they begin practicing in the heat of August.
