What's 23 plus 30? Somewhere close to a hundred? Because that's what I'm sure SW Edgecombe could have scored tonight against the 4A South Central Falcons had it not been for 5 lost fumbles, 3 inside the opposing 15. Even with those miscues, the #10 Cougars (NCPreps Baker's Dozen) improved to 3-0, while SC fell to 0-3.
With the hearts of Cougar Nation still heavy, the team opened with the ball first, and after 2 first downs, they are forced to punt to the SC 35. SC cannot move the ball, going 3 and out, and punt to the SW 36. The Cougars move the ball, aided by a 23yard pass to do-everything HB Marcus Williams, when at the Falcon 11 yard line, the ball is stripped and recovered by the defense inside the 5. And before you can blink, the 1st quarter is over just like that.
The first play of the second quarter sees SC run a stretch play from within the endzone, but it is snuffed out by SWE for a safety. That's the third safety for the defense this young season, as the score is moved to 2-0.
After SWE receives the kick, we again move the ball with ease, but a fumble at the SC 30 kills the drive, as it is recovered by the Falcons. However, the Falcons again go 3 and out, and punt, which is returned to the 50. This SWE drive includes a nice 20 yard run by M. Williams that takes the ball to the 7. But another scoring opportunity, another fumble, recovered by SC at their 10. No threat from their offense, as they go 3 and out once more and punt to the SWE 40. 2 plays later, M. Williams strikes from 55 yards out for a td, and a 2pt conversion run makes the score 10-0. SC takes the kickoff and drives to the SW 44, gaining their 1st first down of the game, but cant make anything of it, as the half ends. What could have and should have been a 31-0 lead sees the Cougars lead 10-0 at the break.
SC takes the 3 quarter kickoff and gains their 2nd second first down of the game but end up punting to the SW 21. M. Williams gains 30yards, and two consecutive facemask penalties take the ball inside the 5, where Williams takes it in from 1. The lead is now 17-0. On the kickoff, SW is charged with two unsportsmanlike penalties on the same play, giving SC 30 yards and 1st and 10 from the SW 30. Fortunately, the SWE defense intercepts a pass at the 1 and returns it to the 32. The offense finally stalls, and we punt. SC's offense finally sees good fortunes as our defense makes what seems to be a tackle, but the offensive player hears no whistle and smartly keeps playing, while our defense stopped, and because of that lapse, he scores from 65 yards out, giving SC just their 2nd touchdown of the year. 17-7. A nice kickoff sees SWE start this drive from their 19. K. Williams makes quick work of that, as he blazes his speed for an 81yd td jaunt. A high snap botches the xp, but the score improves to 23-7. That's how the 3rd ends.
In the 4th, my nephew, who I'm gonna always find a way to include in my posts, suffers cramps and leaves the game. However 3 more SWE players end up coming out due to cramps/injuries at a time where we are just trying to get out of here alive with this win. But before we do, we fumble at the SC 1, recovered by SC, and fumble once more at the SC 27, recovered by SC. The game mercifully ends by the score of 23-7.
What an....interesting 3 games we have had thus far this season. Our offense is not going to be a problem. We seem to have no problem moving the ball at all. Securing the ball is a whole other issue. Around 20 potential points were left on the field due to fumbles in our 37-27 victory at Edenton Holmes. We only had the ball for 3 minutes of the second half vs North Edgecombe, 35-14. And tonight, 30 points were given away because of fumbles in this 23-7 win. I want to be optimistic and say that winning contests in which we don't play flawlessly shows resolve and how good the team is, but I'm also realistic and know that turnovers will get us beat. We did not play an offensively efficient team tonight, and they also gave up over 40 points in their first two games, however any other team would have made us pay. Moving the ball as well as we do shouldn't be for naught. We have a credible defense that is something for teams to be concerned about. I think we gave up only 4 or 5 first downs tonight. Whave a championship caliber offense. But if we dont value the rock, the team will lose against some of the quality teams on our schedule. But hey.....3-0!
