I'm very pleased to see 4 different teams in the 3rd round. It seems it has always been the same three or four every year in the West. It is the same teams in the East this year, but hopefully East Wilkes, East Surry, Mitchell or Walkertown can bring home a State Championship. Has any of these teams ever won a State Championship before?? I know Walkertown hasn't, not sure on the other three/

As bad as I want Mitchell to win. If an it is a big IF, they get by East Wilkes, not sure they have enough defense to slow down either ES. or Walkertown.

Honestly, how good of a defense do you think the others have. Kind of sounded like each of their opponents scored at will too and came up on the losing end. I know that East Surry and Walkertown Prep are good but both gave up a lot of points on their way to victories. So i really dont understand your reasoning saying that you dont think you have enough defense. Maybe just maybe they dont either..But im an East Wilkes fan...so all we need is enough defense for you Mitchell guys and we need to have just as good of an offense to keep the ball away and sustain drives. Thats just as important as a good defense when you monopolize time of possession.

Are you mixing Walkertown and Winston Salem Prep up and calling them Walkertown Prep.

I may be mixing up the name by adding Prep but im not mixing up the schools. In know WS Prep is in the small 1a bracket.

According to information gleaned elsewhere, ES has come the closest with 1 western finals appearance, losing to Albemarle. There will be a new west representative this year in the finals. I will be pulling for whomever that is, but it will be a stiff test again based upon who survives the east. It looks like East Wilkes has the only defense in the west, and that will be challenged over the next couple of weeks. We can talk all we want about offenses, but defenses win those championships.

A little different type of animal to defend in the bottom part of this bracket compared to the top. Bottom is about athletes and spreading you out. Top is about ball control and power football. Next two weeks will be fun to see which style wins out. Good luck to all!

For the most part Swain shut or at least slowed the power of East down last night. It is great to be blessed with a team that is not one dimensional. Last night continued to prove that if you slow the East rush attack it just opens up the pass.

This weekend I give East Surry a slight edge, however Walkertown knows what they are facing and they have already given ES all they can handle. Walkertown is a scary team, but all teams expect to be challenged this time of year.

The Mitchell - East Wilkes game also appears to be a toss up. After holding up strong on the D line against Swain, I feel confident we will do the same against Mitchell, but only time will tell.

If we win, I would like to see and East on East matchup. The two teams have played over the years and usually have had good games.

Mitchell also played Albemarle in the western final in 2010. We had never been a 1a team until 5 or 6 years ago and had usually struggled in the 2a playoffs, with the 3rd round being our farthest trip, but this was also before the time of the watered down playoffs with subclasses. But since our move to 1a we have become a much better program, with a western final appearance, now 3 times to the 3rd round, and a 2nd round appearance all in just the last 5 years. Not really Mitchell, but before the consolidation of Harris and Bowman high schools to make Mitchell, Harris did lose to Cary high school in the state championship I think in the 60s.

Yall may very well control the line against us, but it will be a much different line than you seen against Swain. The line is huge with the players being, 6'7" 330, 6'3" 300, the other 3 at between 6' and 6'2" and above 240, and the tight end at 6'3" 240. I think I have seen where east wilkes doesn't play their lineman both ways so that could become a factor for our big line as they get tired later in the game. Mountain Heritage also had success against us with a smaller quicker line as I believe yall also have so it's hard to say who will control it. Swain has struggled on offense much of this year due to injuries and such and have not been there typical selfs, so I would assume Mitchell is bringing a much more potent offense next week which is averaging something like 46 points a game and has a season low of 27 points being the lowest total. Our defense has been our weakness though and East Wilkes will probably move the ball better than they did against Swain, especially if you can pass or get to the outside, because the strength of the defense is up the middle. Should be a good one, haven't been to East Wilkes high school since our girls played a playoff basketball game there 5 or 6 years ago.

This is a very good matchup, Mitchell I don't think will see the ball enough to see 30 much less 46 especially if their D is lacking, unless turnovers become a problem. Part of EW success on D comes from a time eating O that can keep the ball an entire quarter. I'm very impressed with how gap sound our D plays.

Keep the ball away for another team is a good play. We had the ball 10 minutes in the 2nd Q vs Swain. Hard to win if you dont have the ball. Good luck to both teams.

It's old school, but ball control is the best D against spread. Can't get in rhythm, then the score stays close and low, then panic sets in. BK you guys have used that idea for years. Side note Swain had the ball all but 3 min in the third against us and another 7 min drive into the 4th. It's tough to stop that many plays.
