East Wilkes 15 - South Stokes 6

Hard fought game tonight. South Stokes should have a good year. They have a good QB, good speed in the backfield and a good receiving core. Their line looks the part and they played well.

East took the first quarter led on a 6 yard touchdown run by Jolly, botched snap on the extra point and the kicker runs in the two point conversion.

A ton of flags tonight against both teams.

South scored in the second quarter for a half time score of 8 - 6. After a scoreless 3rd quarter East puts together a 91 yard drive on the back of Javeon and take a 15 - 6 lead. Then the defense forced two interceptions to finish the game off.

Sloppy football at times. East may be able to move the ball down the field through the air more than on the ground. The O line is young and nicked up. If the line play becomes more steady this will be a really good Cardinal team. The D was sound tonight. They did a great job playing fundamental football and wrapping up.

Onto Surry Central who should also be improved this year. Good luck the rest of the South.

This game surprised me considering Simmons had South as a 59 point underdog. East did not look as physical as they did last season. I agree their defense plays good fundamental football and pretty much shut South down most of the game. Offensively I thought the mesh in the veer looked sloppy and not very good reads. The O-line was suspect. South's #2 created havoc up front the whole night. Not being negative on East but just does not look like the same team that beat Swain County by 2 TDs in the playoffs last season. Hope they have another good season. They are well disciplined and play hard.

After an 0-10 season last year it is hard to read how good South can be this season. Saw a lot of positives on D. I already mentioned #2 but #8 Dutton is the best LB South has had since Zack Singleton. Offensively there seems to be some weapons (#44, #14, and #7) but struggled against a very good D tonight.

Best of luck to both teams. It would be nice to see some wins this season in Saura Country.

Surprising score. Either South will be much better this season, East has fallen off (I thought they had a lot of players from 2015 back and a good JV team last season) or it is a combination of both. Or maybe it was just first game jitters and East will get better as the season goes on. Not sure what to think of the Surry Central and East Surry score. Central usually isn't very good. But it looks like East could have another tough one next Friday.

Last years E.W team is gone. This years team can be solid, but the offensive line must find an identity. The S.Stokes defensive line pretty much disrupted the offensive flow for E.W. The Qb/Center exchange for E.W. was riddled with inconsistencies and fumbles. In order for the Cardinals to be successful, they will need to find the correct set of ball carriers that compliment each other's strengths. There are plenty weapons in the backfield, it just seemed like the workhorse fullback #8 didnt get enough touches. He gained positive yards with each touch, and was hard to deal with in the open field. Kudos to the defense of E.W. for bailing the sputtering offense out time after time. E.W. defense pretty much shutdown S.Stokes consistently all night. The defensive backs especially played lights out. Overall a lot of growing pains for the E.W. Cardinals. As long as they work on the offensive line, so that the Qb isn't running for his life, work on the Qb/Center exchange, and find their offensive identity, then they will be fine.

Make no mistake. Next weeks match up with S.Central, can and will be ugly for E.W. if they turn the ball over like they did against S.Stokes. S.Central is poised to be pretty good with 27 seniors. When is the last time anyone has beaten East Surry by 3 touchdowns. Yikes!!!!!

I do think South is much improved. It seems our line guys have been riddled with injuries. Once the sloppiness is worked out East will have a good year. The pass protection was not bad last night. I do think we should mix it up a little more. We have as many weapons at receiver as we do in the backfield.

The center/qb snap was off. It appeared Bruce was getting the ball but attempting to pull out too quick.

No doubt Central will be tough next week. It is good to see them doing well.
