I foresee a 31-21 victory for the Cardinals. ;-)
East Surry has improved tremendously since they got their heads handed to them by Surry Central in their opener. I didn't see their Starmount game, but they seem to be finding an identity that works for them now. As Coach Diamont pointed out, they have five upperclassmen on the O-line, and they kind of rode them to the win last night. They had about 200 yards rushing in the first half alone, and their ability to run the ball opened up the play-action passing game when they wanted it.
This could have been a much more interesting game than it was. North Surry fumbled the ball away on the ES 1-yard line right before halftime, and came up empty on two other trips to the red zone in the third quarter. Coach Lyons seemed to be blaming himself for the failure to score when they were at the 1, but he also said, correctly, that you can't miss that many opportunities in a game. NS was down a couple of key players, including an experienced lineman, and Avery Smith showed some rust in his first game back. He got cramps in the second half and never did look sharp throwing the ball, although he was dazzling on several runs early in the game. The kid who started the first two games actually took over on their last touchdown drive, but all that did was make it a 10-point game again.
One of the ES sideline guys mock-interviewed me late in the game and asked me if I thought ES had any chance coming in. I told him, truthfully, that I thought it would be close, but that NS would win. When I saw the Cardinals in their opener, I could see that they had talent and that the things they did to get blown out were things that were correctable--and that Coach Diamont and his staff would get them corrected. But I didn't expect them to improve this much, this quickly.
We should get an idea just how good they are next week, when they get West Stokes in town. WS already lost 21-7 to Mount Airy, so here's a measuring stick for how the two teams match up.
