Who on earth is Corvian? Another charter school who "totally doesn't recruit"? I've been out of the loop this year dealing with Helene, then my wife getting diagnosed with cancer. Does Mitchell have a chance? Are these the North Charlotte All-Stars? Or have they just not played anyone with a pulse?

Played no one with a pulse. But a good team. Prayers for your Wife!

I see them opening up on Mitchell unfortunately. My prediction 44-20 Corvian. Mitchell scores a late TD to close the gap for the final score.

Probably same as basketball last year. Very similar trek. Unheard of until they play the Big Boys . Then put everyone on notice. At least they did in Basketball last season!

Charter in Charlotte area with a 25 mile radius to get athletes. Surprise, they are a good team. Wonder why?
Yes, that's a very easy recipe to have a good basketball team. Football is different but it wouldn't be hard to massage the numbers and have a good 1a football team with that kind of dirt all while playing within the rules. 2A and above would be harder to play by the rules and be above average on a state level.

AWESHUXXXPA had the scoop on these guys until Deana gave him a whooping! 🤣

You can take 5 random kids from a 25 mile radius that have never played basketball together before and make it work. Hard to do that in football consistently.

But hey, this is what happens when we keep electing people that value the all mighty dollar that don't support traditonal public schools. Maybe if school systems could donate money it would be different.

We get what we ask for. Wait until these private schools that are getting millions of dollars push the state to be a part of things.

Yes, he was a poster that was already posting about his school and Deana saw his IP address was being used to stir up crap on several schools and AWESHUXXXPA has not posted since she showed she knew who he was and I have a pretty good idea who they were also.

I think all these charter and any non-public schools that can draw 25-plus miles away should eventually be in a playoff of their own in football and basketball. Once schools like Corvian start winning football State championships annually then we all will realize how unfair their advantage is. They need to be placed in a playoff of their own which I hear this said almost every year in football but mainly basketball.

They do need their own division but the state will never do that as they love charters.

Won't happen. NCGA doesn't care about fair. If they did they wouldn't be straining rural school systems to fund privates in metro areas.

Hated to hear about your wife. We are continuing to pray for you all.

Charter schools often have access to advanced training facilities and coaching staff that give them a major edge in competitions. And let's be real, it's not just about winning titles, but also the level of ease with which they do it.

Some of their supporters think they are the second coming! My wishes are with Mitchell to play like a true Mountain team and lay the wood to them!
Supporters are just proud off the culture they are building. We are humble and blessed to be in these state run positions.

None of this is accurate... The radius may be correct, but in most cases, what comes in the lottery are kids with parents that are looking for a better (whatever that means) education. We dont get as many athletes as folks think... We mainly get mathmaticians.... And theyre not typically good tacklers!

Charters are not what people imagine. We struggle to field teams... Never had a JV. we mainly get arithmatic majors in the lottery. If theyre big or seem athletic we have to beg them to play.

We dont have any special access to anything (wish we did). However, we do focus on developement and getting kids to college. 99% of that falls on the coaches dime and time. We pitch in for camps and tools to build success and try and get kids in front of college coaches (its about the long term success of the kids, right???). Only the head coach works at the school, so its PTO days and work schedule shuffling to ensure the kids get what they DESERVE. I cant speak for anyone else, but the staff sacrifices daily to ensure we build a sustainable culture that can compete with the historically dominant, tough, PHYSICAL 1A west teams. 😉

Recruited teams usually are very good. They (the Charter and private schools) get to choose their players while public schools normally only get the players from their community.

Sounds to me like a decided advantage. However, this coming Friday night Corvian gets to play EASTERN RANDOLPH.

Wish I could be in two places at once because I would certainly be pulling for ER, right along with Motherhood, apple pie and the American Way.
Not even to mention having a pregame meal at American Roadhouse!! OMG!

Mitchell may have been down this year no doubt about it. But I do recall some of their posters saying they would be good next year. Coach Pittman is a good coach I'm sure they'll be in the mix next year In the 2a ranks.
Yes. Great coach. 🙄. I can’t wait to play them going forward now that we finally have kids coming back out. I’m so sick of hearing how great they are. I don’t remember them winning anything. Conference ? I’m only glad that Coach Robinson stayed in Yancey. I’m fairly certain we can defend the QB power going forward. That eliminates 95% of the offense.

For what it's worth. Many people on here complain about Charter and private schools, yet continually vote in the same people in the General Assembly that is all about giving money to these schools and drain traditional public schools. As the GA controls the NCHSAA we know they will take care of their charter and private schools. The best way to solve the issue is to elect pro public education representatives. As long as the same are in power we will see the voucher program increase and your small local community scholl will suffer.

It seems as Corvian has managed to give the rest of the 1A West a taste of what it's like to be in the SMC. In the SMC we will fight each other like cats and dogs, but when we play others in the playoffs, most of us pull for each other. It seems like the SMC, Mt Airy, Starmount, Tarboro and others are all pulling for ER. I know I am.

Been saying this for years but the folks that keep electing these folks just laugh while ignoring the power grabs they keep playing like coming into session to override a veto which gave private schools millions of dollars. In the same session they've passed a bill to take power away from the Governor. This was tucked into a measley disaster relief bill. Folks need to stop worrying so much about national politics and get invested in state and local. Raleigh is a crap show right now.

Yes you should be looking forward to playing Mitchell. While they were very young this year, until they decided to quit arm tackling and find some toughness things will not improve.

As far as winning I have no doubt that Avery or most any 1a-8a school would consider 2 state title game appearances and multiple regional final games over a 12-15 year period winning. Unfortunately I do not see this kind is success happening again anytime soon. Not bashing just saying I do not see the athletes coming up to make it happen. Here is to hoping I am wrong.

Having watched the Avery Mitchell JV (jr high) game this year if Avery can keep the young men interested and involved and they should have a chance to compete with a lot of WNC teams. Way more players than on the purple side in my opinion.

Good luck to the Viking wrestlers again this year.

You are correct. I can tell you the rumor up here is Avery is about to do away with the recreation department. That alone has killed the participation of kids in Avery co. Too many kin folks coaching …. I suggest Mitchell do the same if they want to continue to grow. Cause I can tell you from experience, our kids know nothing when they get in high school.
