Very difficult times right now for our world because of a nasty thing named Coronavirus aka. COVID-19. Most states have closed schools and shut down all spring sports indefinitely which breaks my heart for the Class of 2020. Who knows what's down the road? With many football programs having plans for spring practices to start soon, will we have the go ahead by the NCHSAA to start on time? Will we be in the clear by June when most start getting real serious about the upcoming season? Will we even HAVE a season? Lots of questions, no definate answer, lots of concern, and many prayers and hopes.

Some say this will last til august or longer.I don't know how you could play in September if it did last til August.I feel for those seniors in springs sport and fall sports if it last that long.
I understand why we're doing this and hope it don't get really bad.

One of the difficulties that I see that's making it so hard to pin down is (like most germs)a person can be a carrier of it and not even know they are.

Most viruses, especially strains of flu, are easier to recognize. Most exposed show symptoms with other viruses. With Covid 19, many show no symptoms, but are carriers and can pass it along to others. That’s why that argument that this is a media ploy, a political stunt or just overreaction is so dangerous. The very people who disregard this may be the ones to infect someone else.
Many folks have said “treat this as if you have it”. Good advice.

Can't remember high school athletics as a whole to ever being cancelled indefinitely for anything. Recently, I remember school's down east being delayed because of hurricanes, but they did resume pretty quick. I don't know, anyone else remember an indefinite postponment by the NCHSAA?

Totally planned pandemic. Just ask Richard Burr.

But yes, my heart breaks for all these seniors that are affected.

When they first started talking about this in China I told my wife with all the travel millions do a day this will spread like wildfire. I told her I wished we had extra money to invest because the market is going to fall. Richard Burr didn't do anything wrong. You buy stocks to make money. He knew the market would fall and he did what millions of others did.( that's what makes it drop) I took my 2 kids piggy bank money almost 20 years ago and put it in US savings bonds. When I realized that was a waste I cashed it and bought company stock where I worked for a discount. Less than 2.50 a share and bought almost 400 shares. Yes they had a nice piggy bank. Big family that donated often. Just a few years ago I sold the stock for them at over 54.00 a share. I gave my oldest her part and the younger is still in college so I invested in some mutual funds for her until she graduates. That piggy bank money I invested was the smartest thing I could do for them.

Whether Burr did anything wrong depends on what he knew and when, and how much he directs his investments. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until evidence shows otherwise. But if he’s guilty, he needs to pay the price. Seems to me, that’s the swamp everybody keeps talking about draining.

He did the same thing in 08.Told everyone not to panic then called his wife and told her to withdraw all their money.

To answer the question about the hurricane, we in Onslow County had some schools out for 3 months. Even this year some teams had to play home basketball games in other high school gyms. That being said I think we were out of the Fall sports about 3 weeks. We all played on our bye week and had the option to play 2 games in one week. Jacksonville had one game we did not make up that year. I think ot was Hereford County which is a good 3 hours away, so both schools decided against it.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the schedule juggling was a big challenge, hopefully we've had our fair share of disappoints. Looking like we may loose this thread, it's going political and preps will shut it down. Hate that.

I understand that in the grand scheme of things that high school athletics are not at the top of the priority list for real life and human survival. But, since we're here on this site, I'll just stick to that... I tried to put myself in these young men and women's shoes for a minute and I absolutely couldn't imagine not having a senior sports season or a senior school year all together. Yeah, I know it's not the end of the world, but sports provide so much more than many will ever realize. Everyone is not as fortunate as you and I might be. The trajectory of a lot of young lives depend the structure, education, disciplines etc. that they will only ever get from sports. I know that without my senior season, I wouldn't be where I am today. I wouldn't have gotten an athletic/academic scholarship. My life probably would be a whole lot different than it is now and it wouldn't be for the best. I just can't help but feel for the young athletes that have been negatively affected by this. I hope this craziness passes sooner than later and life returns to it's regular level of crazy. I'm just glad in times like these that we don't have a Socialist or an Alzheimers patient running the county...

I'm 61 and I don't remember anything close to this except Katrina. Im a lineman and started out with Weeks Construction company in 1985. I've worked every major hurricane since then until I went to work with a Co-op in 2010. Weeks became Mastec along the way. I've heard of people dying in hurricanes aftermath but most were accidents from electrocution or carbon monoxide from using grills indoors. In 2005 it took us 2 days to get to Biloxi Miss. When we arrived we met with Miss power reps that assigned a search and rescue team to go ahead of us and remove bodies from the streets. Death was everywhere. They searched houses and marked them with a special mark if it was clear or a mark to mean dead bodies were inside. After 4 days you didn't need to look at the mark. Your nose would tell you. Wierd thing is a human don't smell like an animal. I spent close to 2 months there. It took years to shake it. Only storm I ever worked like that. We have been blessed on the East Coast. Hopefully we never get a direct impact from a cat 4 or 5 storm. It's life changing. Homes were swept away by a 30' storm surge. I took some pictures but I have only looked at them once. It's easier to talk about now but it's taken almost 10 yrs to do so. When we got power back on at a funeral home in Biloxi they had 2 -18 wheeler trailors refrigerated that they stored the bodies in. They had 168 in there and we were still smelling it in areas where bodies were still there. After 7 days we saw a lot of commotion on the beach one night. We stopped to see what was wrong. Bodies that had been washed out with the surge were washing back up onshore. Hopefully we don't have nowhere near the deaths Italy has had.

I will say this let the football season be cancelled or cut. Then the state and schools will realize how important football is from an economic standpoint and how it keeps other sports afloat. I would guess many AD, Principals and NCHSAA members might look at the sport a little differently

No football would really be tough. Looking forward to the new coach here at Forest Hills and seeing what he can do. Hope this virus can be brought under control better when warm weather comes or a cure/vaccine is developed in the near future. God Bless all of you out there. Stay safe as possible. We'll get through this.

Not sure the warmer weather will have a significant effect. I have family in Australia and there are a fair number of cases. It’s been summer there with temperatures over 100 most of the last three months.
Extreme social distancing and mitigation are the best bets. And if it’s over by Easter, the bunny must have brought the cure. Listen to the medical folks, not that man behind the curtain.

Unfortunately for Australia they're headed into the Winter months there. On top of Coronavirus many different strands of flu begin to be more prominent along with just common colds and other cold weather sicknesses. Also here we have Spring and Summer allergies beginning. Those allergies will have some of the same symptoms as Coronavirus.

Absolutely true that flu, allergies and other seasonal conditions often have the same symptoms as Covid 19. People are understandably paranoid right now.
Temperature in Brisbane in the eighties this week but Australia has just banned travel into or out of the country. My daughter was due to fly there April 13th.

I'm hoping and praying things level out before it's too late to have a 2020 season. I know there's a lot of people that has high school sports low on priority and I understand the logic in that control of the spread is most critical at the moment. I would guess however also that several of those either never played, never had a child play, or just is against it (I can't understand anyone that doesn't like football). There's never been a year of my life that the boys of fall were cancelled and I hope I never have to see that.
Social distancing, hand washing and hygiene are as far as I know, the only defense at the moment. The sooner that the masses embrace that, I feel the better it will get. Give science time to catch up and we'll be fine.
Amen to that. The day that Governor Cooper made his first public announcement on the pandemic and it's symptoms, my seasonal allergies kicked in, yeah I was like "wonderful".
Stay safe and healthy folks!

Another issue probably not many are thinking of is what about the players and their conditioning during this massive downtime. Anybody that knows football knows in reality it's a 365 sport.

Class of 2020 is paying the price. Rising seniors hoping to put there name on the radar at summer camps will pay the price also. Football recruits are graded on Friday nights other sports have a strong AAU summer circuit. Baseball and basketball recruits have other chances to be graded out other than there high school seasons.

Spanish Flu 1918. 1/4 of the world’s population is thought to have been had this flu. Reports of death range from low millions and way up. This stopped NC high school sports for a period including no football title game but it was a dufferent world back then.

The Spanish flu started in the United States and was only called the Spanish Flu because Spain had the most cases. If the political climate back then matched today’s, would the world have insisted that it be called the American or Texas flu?

I am not only bored... I am hungry. Now I want some Texas Toast. Gahhh.. I’m not going to be able to fit out of my front door by the time this is over.

Have read the COVID-19 has been found to mutate in China, also it has shown to be passed from human to animal. If this is the case, this fall we could have a mutant strain. of COVID-19, and a strain that could be passed from animal to human.

Guys im beginning to get a little concerned about the 2020 season. The American Legion World Series in Shelby scheduled for August has just cancelled. This is covered by ESPN and a big deal locally. We are basically 4 months away from opening week and with folks packed elbow to elbow on Friday nights i just dont know if Gov. Coop will go for that. Short of a cancelled season could we see a partial season, games with no or limited fans, a full season that goes into Jan.....who knows.
