Hello Guys.....I have fond memories of playing Cherokee Braves when I was in HS. I was not great but our school felt a bond in some way with Cherokee Braves. I graduated from NCSD. We were in same conference with CHS along with Rosman, Tryon, Polk Central and Edneyville. It was called Appalachian Conference. We had rough treatment from Rosman and Edneyville. I never really cared for Edneyville. I remember they were throwing apples at us at football field at Edneyville HS. I saw all those apple trees around Edneyville HS. I don't think most of our schools in the conference cared for Edneyville.
Let me explain, all of deaf students at NCSD came from all over the state of NC. I was from Asheville and later on moved to Morganton to go NCSD. I remember really well telling some of my friends from eastern part of the NC that Cherokee is a unique place. We would go over Soco Gap before heading to Cherokee HS (old one) . Needless to say, some of my friends got sick going over Soco Gap due to height and dizzy drive. We were awed by Cherokee HS back then with their facility. We gasped when we saw indoor swimming pool and wonderful track around the football field. That Cherokee school etched in our memories as one of the finest school facility NCSD students had ever seen. Sadly that facility wore down but Cherokee did built even BETTER facility few years ago. I finally saw the school about two years ago and were blown away.
The players on CHS always talk to us in homemade sign language about playing different sports during the year after the football game. We got along pretty good and we do play hard against each other. I know my deaf friends and I had good memories from playing against Cherokee HS.Heck some of us did go to State final game between Cherokee and Midway back in 1978. They were real good but came up short against Midway. I also fondly remember seeing Cherokee fans sitting on the bleachers in our basketball gym and usually outnumber us home fans most of the time. We enjoyed watching Cherokee Boys Club buses driving by the school. It was a neat sight.
Some of you Oldies might remember Stacey Rogers that play for us in football and basketball from 1978 to 1981. His brother happen to be Rodney Rogers that went to WFU and play pro for a long time. Sadly he is paralyzed now due to ATV accident. Stacey Rogers had some influence over his younger brother Rodney about playing basketball. Stacey was one of our best athletes coming from NCSD history. Other great player was Craig Brown that play for us from 1974 to 1977. He was undoubtedly the best football player we had and one of the best all around player in NCSD history.
Hey this is a good one for you.....Charles Crowe was another great one from NCSD and he was a full blooded Cherokee. He played for NCSD in early 60's. He got in Burke County Hall of Fame along with NCSD Hall of Fame. He was a great great football player. He passed away last July and his family from Cherokee was at the service. I did shake hands with all of the family members. The church was full of people giving respect to Charles Crowe ...a proud Cherokee and deaf person. He was one of the finest man I ever know and glad to be a good friend with him.
On a side note, what happen to Tiny Taylor and his cousin(?) Pepper Taylor...they play on football team in same time span as Stacey Rogers, Buddy Hill, Bobby Robbins, Archie Elliott and Joe Fish. If I am not mistaken, Joe Fish got all conference as a linebacker for NCSD and Joe Fish for Cherokee did end up All Conference as a lineman?? Any of you know this??
I know that Bob Marr that coach Cherokee back in those days. He graduated from Swain County HS and were in same class with my parents. He did become Superintendent of Swain County School system and retired recently right? He was a fine fine coach.
Sorry guys...I got carried away but I always will be fond of Cherokee School for this reason and hope they will rise again in football. Heck win Smoky Mountain Conference would be great!
