As the season winds down I think it is appropriate to reflect on the four years Catholic has spent in 4A. For those who do not know the Cougars are making the move back down to 3A into a Union County conference which will be an upgrade from the one they are in now and provide better gates, but let's forget about that for now.
The Cougars stepped into 4A in 2013 and many expected them to start strong since Hood was heading into his senior year, but after Hood left many wondered if Catholic's dominance would end? You tell me:
2013: 12-3, Regional Finals
2014: 14-2 State Runners Up
2015: 15-0 State Champions
2016: 13-2 Regional Finals
Catholic complied a 54-7 record in 4A which I think is pretty solid. The Cougars lost close games to Dudley in 2013, New Bern in 2014 and Dudley again in 2016. If they win those we may be talking about Catholic winning 2-3 or maybe even four straight 4A titles.
The Cougars also did not lose one single conference game, even though heading into several seasons many people went with flashy Ardrey Kell and South Meck to finally unseat the Cougars, but the old fashioned, boring Red Pain again prevailed.
The Cougars are young as they head to 3A, but the 4A experience I think did the Cougars wonders. I'm excited about heading back to 3A football, but 4A was fun. Stepping up to the plate and playing Mallard Creek(which many other schools simply refuse to do) helped the Cougars I think and who knows maybe another home and home happens in the future.
There was the butt whooping of Reagan in 2014 when many people picked the high flying Raiders to beat Catholic, only to be proven wrong by the tune of 49-0 and a running clock.
The two incredibly close wins over Vance will always stick out in my mind and of course the 2015 title game vs Rose which exorcised many demons for the Cougars after 4 title game losses since 2006.
Heck even this year beating East Forsyth when many again doubted the Cougars they rose to the occasion and prevailed.
All in all 4A was very good to the Cougars, but I'm very excited to get down to 3A and see what lies there.
GO COUGARS!

Catholic is at 1240 right now, and will stay there for at least the next couple years so they may be on that line. In 2015 they would've been 3A not 3AA
However, I agree I think Dudley and Catholic will meet again.

Does NCHSAAA or NC Preps have a list of who is going where for classifications in 2017? North Davidsonfor example is moving to 2A (have no clue what the expected Average daily #s will be or if we will be 2A or 2AA). Curious after reading this thread how many schools are moving as well. Thx.

Link below of conferences for fall of 2017. Of course dividing into A or AA only happens in football and will not be decided until LEA submits enrollment next fall.

3A is jacked. Whoever brought that up earlier is right, good stuff and thanks again for the link.

ND will almost certainly go 2AA the first couple of years since Oak Grove is starting with only freshmen and sophomores. In 2017, ND will play in 2A with the Jr and Sr enrollment of a big 3A school. In 2018, they will play in 2A with the Sr enrollment of a big 3A school. After that, it's hard to say where they will fall.
