Since we had a Thursday night varsity game this week, I have no game to attend this Friday. So to pass the time, I would like to know who has the best fanbase out there? It would seem like the obvious choice would be the fans of your team, but there is a reason why I bring this question up. I have concerns about the fans of my beloved SW Egdecombe. It seems as if the group as a whole has become a little high siddity and I'm finding that going to away games are more exciting than our home games.
SWE has a Pinetops, NC address, which is a small, two stoplight town in rural Edgecombe County. But even then, the school is located a few miles outside of the town limit, in the country. No stores nearby, no restaurants, nothing to entertain you. It's a school in the middle of nowhere, with an address of a town that shuts down at 11pm, first with the grocery store at 9, then the dollar stores and Hardee's at 10, followed by the convenience stores at 11. It's a great place for the 50+ crowd. And no, I no longer live there. But because of the lack of things to do in Pinetops, games at SWE have become events, not just games. Friday nights on the campus of SouthWest, you could enjoy hanging with your friends, being entertained by the band and the color guards, who put on close to raunchy types of performances, let loose, take pictures, and oh yeah, watch a football game. It has been the thing to do. But this year, although we have only had two home games thus far, I have been completely bored. The stands are filled, but you wouldn't know it unless we score. That's the only time the home crowd seems to make noise. They sit there, looking like they are eating cheese and crackers, sipping on wine, watching a tennis match. What happened to the cheering when there is a first down? What happened to the GET HIM when we are on defense? What happened to to my people? Twice, on third down, the p.a. implored the crowd to GET ON YOUR FEET. I stood up and started clapping, but when I saw that I was the ONLY ONE that stood up, I sat my butt back down. I couldn't believe it. This type of behavior also happened in our first home game. Oddly enough, when we opened on the road, we were very loud and very supportive. We have travelled well over the past decade, so being a strong road crowd is not a surprise. But this year's home crowd has been a huge disappointment. If we don't score, we don't cheer. It's almost as if we have become spoiled. There is no encouragement. Only expectations.
I'd like to hear about home experiences of other teams.
