I'm sure there will be some mad people, but 2 of the top candidates either declined an offer or backed out. Ridiculous that it took this long to end up hiring someone from already in the program though. Congrats to David, he is a great guy and coach and he now has a great opportunity to prove the doubters wrong-hope the Cougars continue to be successful under his watch. Biggest plus I see is that coach Metcalf will likely be running the offense from what I've heard.

With Metcalf running the offense and Burdette continuing to run the defense I don't think this is as bad as people are making it out to be. Either way, it'll take more than a coaching change to make me stop being a cougar.

I'm not at all happy with the way this whole coaching process happened. There are going to be a lot of people who believe the search was a scam. HOWEVER, David Burdette is a hell of a motivator, he knows the players, he knows Ashevilles tradition, we wont have to change the verbiage of our offense, hes young, hes coached in over 40 PLAYOFF games and the players love him.
I will say I will be ecstatic to see Coach Metcalf's offense. He is an offensive genius and nobody will benefit more from Metcalf calling the plays more than Makaius Brewer who will be WNC's best wide receiver next year.

Happy for coach. Well deserved. People will be mad, but owell. He has been around threw the good and bad. He knows football. I'm looking for us to really compete year in and out even more than before. Rumor is metcalf will take on OCord. And if so we will be very dangerous in the spread. Making teams play us as a team. Not just looking for the run now

Metcalf is a phenomenal offensive mind. In his many years as offensive coordinator at high point Andrews, they were always strong.

Good chance for the Coach, but from the outside looking in, how does Asheville just not do a massive search and get anyone they want to with the talent they have. I would have wanted someone with a serious long term track record and multiple State Championships. But like I said, from the outside looking into the Cougars program. Congrats to Coach Burdette, he is starting on the top of the mountain.

Could've said the same for when Reynolds turned the program over to coach Laws. That hire didn't turn out so bad for you guys.

Congrats to coach Burdette. He is an excellent coach, teacher, and man. Coach Wilkins was the same. In 2000, The search took longer to replace Fogle. Wilkins was not the first choice, or second. We now know that Wilkins was the correct choice. I believe strongly that Burdette is the right choice. Coaching is one of the best ways to motivate and help kids grow into productive adults. AHS has many single parent kids who need a good motivator. Wilkins was one and so is Burdette. Congrats!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a guy that is already invested in your program. That is what happened at ACR with Shane Laws and I couldn't be anymore pleased with what he has done with our program. I think he already knows what to expect in regards to the players and the family situations of each. Like it or not that is part of being a high school coach now.

Sounds like Asheville got the best of all worlds. The get a guy already vested in the program. Sounds like there will be a change in the offense. You get to keep rolling.

It isn't like Asheville was horrible and hired an assistant. They are good, they hired an assistant. God bless Danny Wilkins he was the right man to be there all these years, but the offense was stagnant (I am not a spread fan), and it sounds like it will be different. Win/win

congrats to you guys at ahs sounds like you got a good coach thats experienced in the system already in my opinion what makes great coaches are the guys that can and will change and adapt their teams to the types of players and the talent they have from year to year i dont think you can run the exact offense and defense every year at the high school level just my opinion

In 2015 we ran the same plays we did in 2001. In a 2008 interview on the Tuscola football website, former head coach Donnie Kiefer said, to prepare for Asheville he would sometimes watch game film as far back as 2003. lol. "The players change, but the scheme always stayed the same". He meant it as a compliment but its also easier to game plan for an offense when you've run the same plays for over a decade. Id be willing to bet nobody in 2015 runs the same offense they did in 2005. I know Reynolds doesn't, I know Erwin doesn't.

im not knocking coach wilkins methods at all . he did a great job for asheville and i bet he has the respect of every coach they played against. and you sure cant argue with his record.

(I realize coach wilkins started coaching in 2000 at AHS but this is what I found)

From 2001 to 2015 Danny Wilkins teams went 91-18 in conference play.

Out of conference games from 2001-2015 record was 71-26-1

From 2002-2015 Asheville averaged less than 1 conference loss per year.

Under Wilkins Asheville has the record for most MAC conference wins in a row with 18

Under Wilkins Asheville won 12 consecutive conference games 2013-2014

From 2002-2005 Asheville went 24-1 in MAC play.

Under Wilkins Asheville was 4-3 in 3rd round games

Under Wilkins Asheville was 1-4 in 4th round games

Under Wilkins Asheville was 1-0 in state championship games.

Yeah I'm a statistic nerd if you can't tell, 3rd round- 02, 03, 04, 05, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 14

no question that is outstanding. how do you asheville guys think you will be next year.

I think it all depends on how quickly our guys pick up the new offense and how hard they are willing to work. Cougar1 is right though, we don't have much coming back. Worst case is we're looking at a 3rd place finish again in the MAC.

The good news is we have the mountains best wide receiver returning and maybe this year we will get him more than 11 catches.

Will be very young with no depth or size in some spots. Plus, could have some hurdles to get over in the non-conf schedule going to play in the Pit and @ Pisgah as well as home games with Newton and Carver. None of those games are guaranteed wins. Big key will be the development of Devon at QB and getting the ball to Shivers and Brewer in space because this could be Ashevilles weakest line-play in years.

having a qb that can get the ball to the receivers quickly on the outside sure helps a young offensive line .

We were predicted to finish 3rd? Or 4th couple years ago. And finished 1st. Never count us out.

Last year we all had somewhat decent teams and we won a combined 1 playoff game. 8 teams 1 playoff win. That's pathetic and this years Mac conference is weaker than lasts. As it stands right now 5 months away, none of us currently have anything remotely resembling an elite team. 2016 may be the worst the Mac has ever been as all the rosters currently stand.

you mite be right cougar. and i hate to say it but erwin mite be at the top next year but im full of hope that the rockets can be there and u guys are rite there with us im betting too. every team has to rebuild most years i think we can too

Erwin may be the best team coming back but I don't see much. Losing Austin was huge and they have a qb who will throw 40 times a game. That might not be a good thing. Also you look at their schedule which does them no favors. You look at their schedule and best case they are going into the playoffs with 2-3 losses, which means a 5+ seed. I have seen Erwin teams that were good not win a playoff game, I think Erwin may have a pretty good team coming back but as it stands today nobody in the Mac has 3-4th round talent coming back
