Are we going to 5A

I doubt it.. the whole requirement they are striving for is way too much. Even if they do pass it they will screw it up. NCHSAA hasn't done many things right since the start of the century.

I kinda was looking forward to it as we can play in a new conference but I'm sure even if that happens it won't come out good. I have little faith in the NCHSAA anymore. They gotta prove me wrong and I just don't see it.

No. Will not pass.
Yes, this is what I'm guessing will happen.....Every member school will get a vote and 3/4 of the members must say YES....note that it's not a matter of 3/4 of the schools that vote, but 3/4 of the members......so if anybody chooses not to vote, or is late responding, that counts as a NO....might be hard to convince a lot of the current 2A & 3A schools to go for the change (with the, "What's in it for me?" mentality)....the small 4A schools and the small 1A schools are the ones hurt most by the current system, especially in sports other than football where the playoffs are not subdivided....even if every 1A & 4A school votes for a change, that's currently not even half of the member schools with the current 20/30/30/20 model....and it seems like the larger 4A schools might vote against it out of self-interest....plenty of current 2A & 3A schools may say YES but unless it's almost unanimous among them, I would agree that it's doubtful that the vote passes

Go to six classifications, and six champions eliminate A, AA. Will make for better football playoffs.

I dont care what they do as long as SWO gets out of the Coastal 8 conference ......

Maybe so.. I just don't see the need for some teams having byes in 1A & 4A... That's kinda what brought me to that

IF they want to keep it at four classes and eight football champions it is a simple fix. Reduce the amount of qualifying 1A and 4A teams to 40% (43% for 1a) and have 32 teams in the playoff. No byes, four rounds. Finish a week before 2A and 3A. They could then consolidate each weeks games to one or two stadiums depending on how they scheduled the games. I think would help the attendance at the title games and may be they could make the games more of an event.

Does SC still do that Big 16 league or whatever?

The true Big 16 has been gone for years. There were some positives and negatives with their structure of that. They had been subdividing 4A down the middle (just like NC) for several years and went to five classifications with no subdividing in 2016.

What about just adding 5 classes to football only?

They would need to align football separately and that was an option for the 2013 realignment but the schools could not seem to "grasp" that idea. Then director, Davis Whitfield, told the members at regional meetings it would allow the sport that is the most different more autonomy. Got no traction.

Six football champions is the perfect number in my opinion!

Other than 1A the classifications are competitive now. Only way I would support six "classifications" is if they figure out a way to have for non football sports a 1A subclass with charters, 1A Parochials, and open enrollment 1A schools. That is an issue and it is only going to get worse.

Good, informative post tarheelg! Think how bad it would be for small 1A and 4A schools if the four or five classes are split evenly (4 by 25% or 5 by 20%). That is what people seem to miss. A school struggling to get to 1,400 enrollment in a class with mostly 2,200 to 2,800 enrollment schools.

I have a feeling Meck, Wake, Guilford, and Forsyth may all go with it as they may see it in their view as a way to improve the overall aspect of the NCHSAA. That is sixty members. 1A has about 120 voting members including non football. That is 180 but they are still about 135 short if those would all vote for the change which is no guarantee and a long way from what is needed.

If you think we have too many football champions, I just glanced at the results of the cheerleading competition. 25 divisions.

please note. I plead ignorance. I know absolutely nothing about cheerleading competition. But 25 winners?!!

It's the participation trophy age

Going to 10 classifications, split.
Round robin playoff.

NCHAA will receive 90% of gate and concessions.
