I hope some of the ACR fans that frequent this board can shed some light on the current program at ACR. I know that ACR use to be a team that hit a team in the mouth for four quarters and whether they won or lost the other team paid the price. I have notice that in the last few years the ACR defense is not near what it use to be especially against the pass. I remember a time when teams were lucky to get two first downs in a row now teams seem to move the ball at will. What has happened? Has there been a change in coaches? I always admired the style and way they played smash mouth football. It was
a style of play the resulted in a lot of wins. Now they look like so many other spread teams that seem to have lost the identity that brought them state championships.

Well at least we don't have to hear about how Reynolds is averaging 80 points a game against Enka north buncombe McDowell and Roberson anymore.

typical of spread teams even on the college level defenses lose their toughness. they just can't maintain the tough physical edge you do when you play smashmouth football.

Numbers alone will tell you if you are a spread team and not a smash mouth running team that your defense will not be as good simply because they will be on the field more. A smash mouth running team chews up clock and the defense isn't playing. A spread team even a great spread passing team their defense will be on the field for many more plays because their offense is scoring quickly or they throw a couple incomplete passes stops the clock more and bam your defense gets very little break. The reason our defense was great in the Poss era was because we ran the ball 40 to 50 times or more a game then we passed it thus running clockand thus our D was on the sidelines resting. Are there things we could do better? Sure but sometimes the better team wins and I think that happened Friday night.

Reynoldsrocks, right on.

I don't think there is anything soft about Reynolds. If I had to pick one thing about you guys program from top to bottom that needs work, it would be clock management. I've never understood why coach Laws gives the ball back to any team with 2 minutes in the ball game when you're only up by one score. Had nothing to do with Friday night though. I agree with your whole statement.

Pound the rock = control the clock = well rested defense = win

reynoldsrocks you speak truth as far as ball control etc. but when poss coached when our guys tackled you you went backwards. now a days we get drug for a few yards before the ball carrier goes down. i think our players are still capable of that kind of defense but practicing against the spread takes that away from any defense

Coug I agree with the ball control philosophy but spread teams are repped to score quick and score a lot. If a ball control team can execute and keep the ball away from spread teams they will be successful but if a team well versed in ball control falls behind to a spread team the odds are definitely against them. Ball control teams don't practice the passing game as much as spread teams. I saw where Coach Wilkins aired it out a bit more last week and that bodes well for you guys! You have to throw it to beat the teams down east. Good luck!

To reply to Bruce, I understand the mid term elections have you in a tizzy but ACR football doesn't need any of your democratic backlash. Back in the Poss days they ran a 4 - 4 defense that was a smash mouth defense and rightly so they faced run first teams in that era, but that defense would get throttled in the spread era. ACR is in a 3 - 5 scheme and won a ship in 09 running this defense. Beat a Dudley team who thought they could line up in a mighty duck flying v formation and grind the 3 - 5 but the defense held.....probably because they had not one but two division 1 (Notre Dame and Brown) linebackers that anchored that defense. If opposing teams choose to run the wishbone/veer I'm sure ACR along with the rest of football would go back to running 4 -4 or 5-3 defenses and play "smash mouth football" This is 2014 not 1984 kids are bigger and faster and coaching is better for the most part.... You can't hit what you can't catch... can't coach speed, it's god given... ACR is highly respected on the boards and in football around the state. Stop trolling for verification of your predisposed accusations. The dems lost get over it.... wake the "F" up! If you're not smart enough to see that it doesn't matter if you're Dem or Rep the only thing that matters is GREEN!

There is nothing wrong with the ACR program. Laws is a helluva football coach and we are lucky to have him here. Part of the reason it got ugly quick down there this past Friday were turnovers. Our first three possessions ended with a fumble, blocked punt and an interception. The kids were shell shocked and struggled to gain any momentum after that.

But to say that the ACR program is going away is, frankly, a misguided and ignorant statement. Defense is just simply tougher to play now whether it is the rule changes or the simple fact that teams throw it 40-50 times a game now. The game is not played between the tackles, like it was in the Poss-era. Teams are filled with more speed and spread offenses allow them to attack your weakest player in one on one matchups.

Since 2005 the Rockets have only been beaten in the first round once (2011). And all Rocket fans know how tough of a year that was with a sophomore quarterback, as well as a star running back gone for the season with a knee injury.

Kick us while we are down after a loss, but rest assured these kids will bounce back and ACR football will continue to be what it has been for the past 30 years, a WINNING program.
