If I wasn't there myself, I would think that the title score was a typo, but alas, it's not. Washington defeats #5 on offense, defense, and special teams, enforcing a running clock in the process. It was the first quarter that did the Cougars in, as Washington scored on the second play from scrimmage from 48 yards out, followed by a blocked punt recovered at the 1, an easy 1 yard TD, another punt on the ensuing SWE drive that saw the snap go into the end zone and recovered by Washington for a TD, which then saw a fumble by SWE on their very next play be recovered by Washington, who then takes in in from 13 yards out....and before you know it, it's 26-0 Washington, with three minutes left in the first. That was the ball game, because from then on out, SWE wasn't into it. Credit Washington for taking our will away. I hate that we didn't get to see a hard fought game, but SWE was done playing after the half. At 13-33, SWE had an opportunity to make it 20-33 going into the half with the possession of the ball coming out, but Washington themselves scored with 9 seconds left to make it 13-40. Our goose was cooked at that moment. I told people that Washington was NOT down. Their three losses came to teams with a combined record of 21-1, and they've beaten some pretty good teams. They actually have the #1 toughest 2A schedule. It's been said that the SWE team was feeling themselves. Hopefully, this brought them back down a little and motivates them. Losing is one thing. Losing how we did......ouch.

SWE'98 you hit the nail directly on the head. It was Katie, bar the door at halftime. I walked down the bleachers, exited stage left and crossed I95 before the second half even started. I didn't want to admit leaving at the half, but after looking at the final score my conscious was a little easier on me.

They played a different defensive formation. Why, I don't know. The defense has been averaging 11ppg.....and they switched it up. My nephew is the starting OLB. He plays the weak side 90% of the time. He made the first tackle of the game, and then they took him out on play number two. Play number two...a 48 yard scamper to the weak side. Smh. He only played five snaps the entire game. Five snaps...starting OLB. Why we tried to be cute and switch things up, I just don't know.

Back from where? Washington wasn't down. That now 5-3 record is misleading if u look at who they lost to. Plus their wins weren't against slouches either.

SWE coaching staff very exposed. Cannot prepare for a quality team. Too simple minded attack-need to get some offensive diversity in the program. Of course, that would require cutting strings from the previous head coach and going to clinics, reading books, get some instructional dvd's........expand the breadth of knowledge within the coaching staff. Running backs are in a Knute Rockne stance-have them upright to get a good first step. Not sure about the game plan for the defense last week.......Need a contingency plan as that toe-to-toe-run between tackles will get stopped.

Well '98, looks like we will eat our share of crow this week... 4 things that greatly impacted the loss Friday night: 1. Mistakes - horrible special teams effort with blocked kicks and snaps over the head, fumbles every drive (it felt like it) and a defensive effort that never really showed up. The mistakes I'd hope Washington was going to make were ours and dug our own grave. 2. Blackout night - Players were too focused on the "events" going on. I know, the intent of the Blackout night is to get players and fans hype and motivated, but when Cobb Sr. was coaching - you didn't have that kind of stuff. You walked down the catwalk or the stairs near the baseball field like you owned the place and that was intimidation enough towards anyone from the opposing side that was there to play. Football should be motivation enough! 3. Coaching - when the run isn't working - lets run it again. That was the philosophy Friday night. They shut our run down consistently and we looked like we were scared to try anything else. Sure, SWE's bread and butter is 30 trap, but when a good team figures out how to stop it, you have to have some way to overcome that. Not sure what the passing stats were, but there weren't many attempts and one of those was a completion for a fairly long TD. Quon dropped one or two and that snap that the QB fumbled early on should not have been enough to keep the receivers on the sideline. 4. Will to win - We weren't done before the half, we were done before the 2nd quarter. I like to pay attention to how the sidelines react to plays whether they are for bad or for worse. Our sideline had their heads down as soon as Washington blocked that punt on our first drive.

Maybe we can come back to life this week and win out on the last 3...

Couldn't for the life of me figure out why we kept trying over and over and over again to run the ball the way we were without even attempting to spread them out. The previous game, we threw it all over the place and was successful, and I thought that it was specifically in preparation for this game. But we never did. They had hogs on the d line to stuff the run, and their linebackers had excellent sideline to sideline speed to stop sweeps and outside runs. But I have to think that if we had just spread them out, or at least kept them guessing, that it would have been anybody's game. But when you know what's about to happen, and you have the bodys to do something about it, then you're gonna get a game like that. Oh well. On to the next. I hope the staff learned something. I'm utterly surprised by the lack of adjustment.
