NCHSAA Delays start of 4AA and 4A State Championship Football Games at Wake Forest

CHAPEL HILL – Due to winter weather in the Winston-Salem area and what is expected to be dangerous conditions for spectators earlier in the day, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has made the difficult decision to delay the start of the 2017 4AA and 4A Football State Championship games scheduled at Wake Forest University’s BB&T Field.

The start of the 4AA game between Wake Forest and Mallard Creek has been delayed three hours and is now scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Subsequently, the 4A game between Scotland County and Harding University has also been delayed three hours and is now scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.

Sinclair Broadcasting is still planning to broadcast the games, however, the TV schedule and listings by market released earlier this week will be amended. An updated TV schedule for each market will be released when it becomes available later this evening. ALL GAMES WILL STREAM LIVE ON THE NFHS NETWORK. Subscriptions to the NFHS Network are $9.95 per month and subscribers will have access to content from all over the United States including North Carolina.

Commissioner Que Tucker, “Based on the reports we received from the staff at Wake Forest and our conversations in the office, we feel that it is in the best interest of all participants, especially the spectators, to delay the games at Wake Forest until the temperature rises, and the staff at the stadium has a chance to prepare the stadium to host everyone in a safe mann

That's because we can't handle the snow. You know, pre treat the roads, plow them, slag, etc. And if it freezes again later in the evening it is even less safer for the fans, and players to be heading home later at night. Play at Noon and 4. Then get heading home before the roads re freeze. And don't tell me it is unsafe for the kids. They Would Love Playing in the Snow!! Oh yea. Go Scots!

Darned if they do and darned if they don't. There are two problems and both have different solutions. If keep the games at noon and 4pm, fans will be driving in some less than ideal situations. Move the games back 3 hours and then you have the threat of black ice. From looking at the forecast it appears that it will be colder Saturday night than tonight which would lend to the bigger threat of black ice.

Either way, someone will complain.

They will play next week. That snow is not going anywhere for a few days, and Wake Forest U nor the NC athletic association is going to fork the money it takes to clear the field.

Latest accumulation forcast for Winston-Salem is 4-6 inches
doubt we make the 6” total for snow in WS, but they are now forecasting snow to continue till mid morning on Saturday. Can’t see any School system allowing activity buses out tomorrow headed to WS.

I remember the 89 game. I think they covered the field with tarp and the roads were clear we drove up that Sunday morning...and had a blast. I think the attendance was down somewhat compared to previous year.
