Asheville just forfeited their playoff series to Lincoln County. So Lincoln County also advances to the 2nd round and will play Cherryville beginning 7/9. So Area IV is now down to 13 teams participating in the playoffs.

Area IV Playoff story.
The Saturday morning meeting resulted in all 15 teams indicating they could field their team for the playoffs. Cleveland County won the coin toss over Cherryville getting a first rd bye and the brackets were finalized. Union County, who was the first rd match for Cherryville said they did not have a field to play on so it was agreed that all games in the series would be played at Cherryville. Then Saturday afternoon Union called and said they were going to forfeit the series. Union County only played 4 of their 12 Eastern division scheduled games this season. They probably should not even been considered for the playoffs in the first place.

On Sunday afternoon Asheville called and said they did not have enough players and would be forfeiting their series with Lincoln County.

So, as it turns out 3 teams get byes to the 2nd round and Mint Hill the first place team out of the Eastern division has to play a first round series. They are probably not happy about that. Legion baseball is always interesting.

Crazy stuff. I was expecting both Asheville and Union County to field some pretty decent teams knowing what they had the potential to draw from. Saw Asheville play and they were ok. Seems like they only had 2 or 3 bench players when I saw them. Just a shame.

Union county only had 12 players on their roster. I got to imagine a lot of players were not available due to the 4th of July holiday.

I wonder what a shorten American Legion baseball season this summer of only basically 2 weeks will do to some teams in NC in the coming years. I got to imagine a lot of teams lost a lot of gate that they normally rely on!

Heard a lot of conversations about this issue. Lack of gate money was a real concern. Hopefully everyone weather's the storm and everything is back to normal next year.
