Looking over the recent Brackets in the 1A playoffs, there's some interesting first round matchups:

Of the 32 playoff teams, only 14 teams have a winning-record with 3 teams at .500, meaning 15 teams enter the playoffs with a losing-record....No reason to discuss this since it's been hashed out so many times before, but it's not a good look for the NCHSAA when basically half the teams that qualify, have losing records...

Anyway, here's some interesting statewide 1A Playoff Matchups:

East
--------
There's 3 first round matchups that have some intrigue to me personally:

#11 seed North Edgecombe traveling to 6-seed Pamlico County...Both teams enter the game with identical 5-5 overall records, and don't know for sure whether these two teams have played before in the playoffs or not?...

#8 seed Kestrel Heights playing a first-round playoff game at home in spite of not playing in a football conference with other 1A schools, should be concerning for 1A schools moving-forward IMO?.... #9 seed Columbia who seems to be having one of their better seasons will be the visitor for Kestrel Heights in this playoff matchup......Who wins this matchup, and what is your feeling about the NCHSAA letting a team into the 1A Football Playoffs and giving them a home playoff game, even though that team didn't play ANY Conference Football Games?

#5 Seed Manteo hosting #12 Jones Sr. is a game that seems to be a tossup too me, but how about you?

Overall, Top-Seeded Plymouth once again seems to be the heavy favorite to return to the Title game for the 4th straight season, but think that #4 Seed South Creek might just give the Vikings a tussle in the 3rd round?....#2 Southside looks to be the favorite to meet Plymouth in the Eastern Final....

West
---------
Right at the Top of the list of must-see first round matchups is #13 Seed Albemarle traveling to face #4 Seed Thomas Jefferson....The Bulldogs might have been a little down this year, but they are in a perfect situation to make some real noise in the playoffs...Better watch out for Albemarle in the top-half of the Bracket?

#7 Mountain Island Charter and #10 WS Prep will meet this coming friday for the first time ever, and it will also be the first time that either team has played a playoff game in school history?....Who has the edge?....It's hard too tell from the outside looking-in, but it is an intriguing matchup between the Phoenix and the Raptors?....

Which SMC school will get the first shot at the Top Seed Community School of Davidson in the 2nd round?....Will it be a rested #8 Seed Andrews who had the week off last week with their last win at home, coming 3 weeks ago against #9 Seed Cherokee who will be their opponent in the first round?

#6 Rosman will entertain the #11 Alleghany Trojans for the first time in the first round....The two teams met once before back in 1993 in the first round in Sparta with the Tigers winning that first-ever matchup 31-13...A Tiger win would likely setup a 2nd round playoff matchup at #3 Murphy who will be a heavy favorite in the first round against #14 Bishop McGuinness, and the Bulldogs just beat the Tigers 21-6 on friday in Murphy to end the Regular Season....

Overall, A Robbinsville/Plymouth rematch in the 1A Final looks like a REAL possibility heading into the playoffs...Be interesting to see if that matchup happens, or whether some team from the East or West surprises the Championship Favorites?

On a personal note: Look forward to watching the Tigers this friday in Rosman against the Alleghany Trojans...

I look for Andrews to give Community School of Davidson all they want. I would not be at all surprised to see Andrews knock them out.

Looks like a Rosman - Murphy rematch in round 2.

Not trying to slight any of the schools here but it is perfectly clear that the NCHSAA is a complete joke for the way the playoffs are put together. More than half the teams have a losing record. There are a couple of quality teams but overall this bracket is horrendous. I believe the winner of the Murphy/Rosman game and Robbinsville will win it all.

Mountain Island Charter is an interesting question mark in the bracket...they got killed in SPC play, but have had a coaching change since then and seem to be playing a lot better. However, those wins were against much worse competition. It's hard to judge how much they've actually improved under the new coach based off wins against home school teams and whatnot. I guess we will find out now.

One reason the 1-A teams have losing records is because they have to play much larger 1-AA, 2-A, 2-AA, 3-A, 3-AA teams. Size does matter when it comes to winning even if there are some exceptions to be found. However, there are too many 1-A teams in the playoffs, cut the number in half.

Exactly bearcat. Its not freaking rocket science. Yey year after year the same thing. Let the small schools play for Christs sake.

We have to get by a really talented Cherokee team first. Our boys are not looking ahead and know they have a battle ahead.

Andrews will roll into the third round of the playoffs!! Will give Cherkee another beat down and will destroy Community School of Davidson.

Here's some random thoughts ... Kestrel Heights is a charter school in Durham ... Durham borders Chapel Hill ... Chapel Hill is where the NCHSAA headquarters Is located ... NCHSAA staff, or family and friends of the staff, may or may not have kids that attend Kestrel Heights ... Very Interesting ??

I took a gander at Kestrel Heights schedule - yep 0 conference games ?? They played home school teams, prep schools, private schools - two games were forfeits ?? If I were Columbia's AD and coaches I would be making some noise about this homefield situation.

At the top the brackets are still pretty strong my opinion. it's the dropoff after that that is weak. Robbinsville, Murphy, Rosman, Andrews and Cherokee are all quality clubs. Albemarle is always dangerous. CSD is 10-1 and top seed. Plymouth and Southside are fine looking 1-2 seeds in the east.

They made a mid-season coaching change? That rarely works at any level, but I would think it would be even more detrimental at the high school level. Just my opinion of course, but that is an extremely interesting situation in high school.

Yeh their coach resigned after they started 0-3 despite a lot of hype about their D1 recruits. They went 6-2 under the new coach, but against an easier part of the schedule. It also looks like they switched QBs around the start of October and haven't lost since...but again, they've been playing home school teams and bad private schools since they had to play their SPC games early.

Good post, and agree that it is strange to say the least that a small little ole' Independent school near the Headquarters of the NCHSAA is allowed to participate in the 1A State Playoffs in spite of NOT having to do what the rest of the 1A membership is REQUIRED to do, and that's play in a conference with other members who play football....

And to give that team a HOME playoff game too boot is really disgusting IMO, and shows a TRUE bias by the NCHSAA in this case....

That's going to be some road trip for Columbia to make in the first round, and I think I would also be more than a little upset about it if I were the Coach of the Wildcats....He should be able to use this as motivation for his team as SamtheMan mentioned above?

I just hate it when the NCHSAA pulls junk like this during the playoffs, and makes me wonder about the people in charge of the Association?

There's nothing fair at all about this situation, and don't see how it can be justified by the NCHSAA because it clearly shows favortism toward Kestrel Heights by awarding them a home playoff game?

Don't worry, Columbia is gonna make the long ride up there and put a backyard whooping on them boys!! Columbia is a fairly good football team. Talent at a couple of the skill positions and the QB is gonna give them fits all night!!

Vikingfan08, I'm just curious....Was last friday's win by Columbia over Perquimans the first victory by one of the former Tideland Conference 4(Cape Hatteras,Columbia, Creswell or Mattamuskeet) since those teams have joined the Coastal-10 Conference?

Thanks in advance, and good luck to your Vikings in the 1A East....Although, it's probably the other 1A teams in the East that will need th luck...lol!

I'm really not sure.. For some reason I wanna say Creswell several years ago won a couple of games. And I think Perquimans was the victim then too..

there actually is a keistrel heights fan on carolinapreps, he said the ad for the school shows no support for football whatsoever. they dont have a stadium, he said they had to rent a middle school field to play there games this year, and although they r higher seed they may have to travel week 1.

mountain island charter i think i read switched from throwing the ball all the time with a freshman qb to running the power i and whipping up on sorry teams. i think there game will be a good one vs wsp then robbinsville will crush the winner.

I don't think mountain island will impact the playoffs at all this year. With that being said with their location and the kids they could draw from the surrounding charlotte area they may greatly improve over the course of the next few years.
