East Wilkes 27 - North Stokes 21

East dominated the first half despite 2 turnovers jumping out to a 21 - 0 lead. One of the turnovers came on a bone headed play with 19 seconds left in the first half causing North Stokes to score right before halftime. East defense had just made another stop and East had the ball inside their own 20. Instead of taking a knee and going to halftime, the coaching staff calls a sweep. North had good pressure, the toss is fumbled, North picks it up and runs it in for the score. Not to be out done, East gets the ball after the kickoff with 6 seconds left, they run the same play. For the love of the game take a knee.

With the new life North had been given they played really well in the second half and had East on the ropes. They cut the lead to 21 - 10 on a 35-40 yard field goal. Nance for East broke a long touchdown run to put East up 27-10. North put together a nice drive with the help of 3 flags to cut the score to 27-17. With 4 minutes left East throws an interception, their 3rd for the game. On the next play North throws around a 40 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 27-24 and Uncle Mo is wearing green. Not so fast the refs call a hold on an offensive lineman and the play is called back. I am not sure if it was a good call or not, but it was one of the nicest pass plays I have seen in high school in a while.

I was hoping to find some answers as to is East for real or a fluke. As of today I have to say fluke. Why you ask?

Too many turnovers (1 fumble and 3 interceptions)

Undisciplined coaching. Covered above was the horrible call of not taking a knee at the end of the first half, twice, however I left out the two fourth down calls they made in the second half. East went for 4th and 5 and then 4th and 6 from around midfield. North stuffed both and as a result they received great field position. I understand being aggressive and going for it the first time, but East showed no respect for their opponent by going for it the second time. The defense held strong, but they can only save you so many times. Against a better team you cannot do stupid things.

People love being aggressive, if it is mixed in with a little common sense. East has the talent to win the conference this year, but will the minds on the sidelines put them in the right situations? Will the players on the field cut the turnovers out? Turnovers have been a problem 2 out of 3 weeks. East is 3 - 0, but they will need to clean a lot of things up against Forbush to come out on top.

Is It Over at Erwin?

Just wondering. They have been waxed like a cheap surfboard these past two weeks. I know for the longest time they were an easy win like Enka Stinka or N. Buncombe but that changed when they stole one of the Haywood County coaches and have enjoyed some solid seasons of good football. We played them twice in post season and split 1-1. Seems like they might be slipping back into obscurity on the mountain radar. Anyone?

Clinton and Shelby

Now that I've seen both State Championship participants play in person time to do a comparison of the two!
Clinton
• Lost a lot in the 2015 senior class that many thought would be too much to replace. But with the way the Offensive line and defensive line are holding up so far I believe they will be just fine this season.
•Not much size but Clinton has a Very fast team this year as some of you guys have stated before! But with 2,000 yard rusher Skinner back along with a supporting cast in Faison (when he comes back from injury), Kris Williams, Dre Oates, Pope #15, along with Tyion Wright, Clinton can be very dangerous this year.
•Defense for Clinton this year will still be very good but I believe last years defense was better. Lost a lot of size on the D Line and with #3 Dessus likely done for the year the Secondary looks really thin back there but still believe they will be just fine until they run into a team with a dangerous air attack! In the end I still believe that the Dark Horses will be too much for any team in the east and will return to the State title game.

Shelby
Saw this years Golden Lion team play for the first time last night at RS Central.
• From what I've heard/read/observed Shelby has had a REALLY tough non conference schedule this year and went 3-0 against top 10 3A schools.
• Very explosive offense led by #11 Lee. A pass heavy team this year for Shelby which I would never in my wildest dream thought was possible! Dynamic WR's in Borders and Wright are hard to cover for any defensive secondary. The O Line for Shelby is looking really sharp right now. They are returning 4 out of 5 starters from last years team and really look good as a unit right now
• Defense for Shelby this year still remains a work in progress I would say. Very valneurble on the right side of that D Line but with returning tackle leader LB Dax Hollifield there I believe this defensive unit will come together and be ready to defend the back to back state titles.

In the end if these two powerhouses meet again in Raleigh for the State Championship it will be a much better game I believe but I still give Shelby the edge in a way to early prediction just because the Golden Lions air game is way to tough to stop!
Final Score
Shelby - 38
Clinton - 23

Kings Mountain @ Burns

Hard to figure why this thread has not been started. As long as the "Dawgs" were playing Q Foundation or Chase, the thread was a go.

Now that a real football team is about to come in to Ron Green Stadium..... "crickets*

Burns IMO is about to get a BOOT STOMPING" of monumental proportions.

Better pray for thunder and lightening an hail, and hurricanes, locusts, and lice, and goats to get turned loose. Oh that's right, even if all that happens, you'll still have to make this one up...

KM - A lot

Burns - Not enough.

Enjoy the cellar........

Four County Week 5

Losing the Trask and Pender games last week put me at 22-4 on the season. Midway helped me out with their 16-14 win over Lakewood. Congrats to Midway and WRH to the 4-0 start.

With 5 open dates, this will be a pretty slow week in the Four County but 3 pretty decent games.

Clinton @ Hoggard- Coming off the bye week, Clinton looks to remain undefeated but has to do it against 4A power Hoggard. Even though Hoggard is 1-3, they have played a pretty tough schedule. But I believe Clinton will have too much offensive fire power. Clinton 34- Hoggard 14

East Bladen vs Laney- This will be Laney's 5th away game in a row and had to travel to Rocky Mount twice on Friday and Saturday. Will that have an affect on the Bucs? If I believe East Bladen is just as good as Clinton and WRH, I have to make a bold prediction here. I think East's Defense will shutdown Laney and East will win big. East Bladen 35- Laney 7

Union @ Princeton- Union has been impressive so far this year. Must have a pretty good D down that way. Union will take this in a low scoring game. Union 13- Princeton 6

2015 SP football

SP is about to be the most untested 9-2 record in school history. Crest and Shelby were two good respective teams (albeit one 2a), Lincolnton will do well at 2a against other teams with their minimal depth and numbers, but SP is about to go through a Gaston County football gauntlet that resembles a 3 year old dance competition. Just show up, do half the steps and everybody will reward you with thunderous applause. It's not SPs fault. But, how far has GACO football fallen? It has been noted on an earlier thread that FV wouldn't be any good. I think EG is the 2nd class of the conference this year with HH, FV, NG and Ashbrook looking like 2-3 win teams this year (and getting those due to beating each other).
SP will walk backwards into the playoffs while winning the conference with ease. I think this has hindered them the last few years...having such a terrible conference. Around playoff round 2/3, when you face legitimate competition and actual defenses it seems we aren't as tough as we used to be for so long. I'm glad Crest, Lincolnton and Shelby are on the non conference schedule for sure (need those tough games). Not sure why in the world Q Foundation/W Charlotte or whoever is on there.

SMC Pick 'em Week 5 Games, and a question....

Week 5 games:

Andrews at Hayesville (DOUBLE JEOPARDY)

Tuscola at Swain Co.
Dropout GotW: N. Buncombe at Mitchell
1A GotW: S. Nash at Tarboro (DOUBLE JEOPARDY)
WNC GotW:
Franklin at Erwin
Open-Date GotW: W. Henderson at Mtn. Heritage
OMD's GotW: Plymouth at Camden Co.

Pick 'em here: http://goo.gl/forms/zahCx4fmE1

Conference starts next week, and all conference games will be double jeopardy. There will be enough other games to keep us at +/- 55 points a week max. Hope there are plenty of competitive ones to choose from... so here's the question: is it better to stay with more western/small school games, or should we pick games where the teams might be less familiar, but the games are maybe more competitive? For example, I passed on Kell/Hough last week in favor of a more local matchup... what do y'all think?

Crest @ TCR

The only reason I started this thread was because I am hoping someone can explain to me why in the world we keep rescheduling TCR and traveling up that dang mountain to play maybe the 4th or 5th best team in Asheville??? We might as well be playing Q Foundation! or North Hendersonville! Is there no one better than TCR that we can schedule for this particular week? Is that it? Freedom has even proven they are better than TCR...We really need to change this PLEASE! Find someone else! Anyone else! we can do better! Why can't we schedule Erwin? or Asheville? or ACR? Anyone else but those Richie Rich soccer playing douche bags...I pray this is bulletin board material, because TCR needs a fire lit under their a$$ and we need competition because this conference sucks a$$
