Asheboro at Providence Grove

Got my first taste of basketball in Climax last night.

I was treated to an unexpectedly amazing girls contest. PG erased a nine-point deficit in the third quarter and wound up winning 71-68 in OT. The game was an up-tempo affair the entire way. Brooke Ingram, Laurel Bernhardt, and Kenzi Mundy all hit big threes during this stretch. Asia Steverson did a great job on the boards.

Boys game was tough. PG battled Asheboro evenly till about the fourth quarter. Just too much Jequarious Stanbeck for the Pats to deal with. Stanbeck finished with 26 and pretty much got anything he wanted on the inside.

Despite the loss, I do think the PG boys have the potential to be a little better than last year. I liked what I saw out of point guard Gabe McKoy.

OFFICIALS

https://www.qcnews.com/news/u-s/nor...als-for-high-school-sports-commissioner-says/ I have herd a lot of complaining at playoff games about officiating either on here or in the stands. I will be honest its not been good. I had a guy ask me why is the officiating not good after he was yelling at the officials and said bc of people yelling at them. Was funny if you were their. Anyway I reminded him NC has still a official's shortage as the older guys are retiring the younger guys coming in just stay two years and quit. Just remember when you are yelling at the officials Friday night and i'm including my self just tell yourself there is a shortage bc of fans and coaches bad behaviors and this is what you get. If it keeps going in this direction there will be no games. You want the best of the best in these playoff games and we are just not getting it anymore. These guys are working there butts off and have the effort it's just they may not have the experience to work the playoffs yet with two good teams where the action is quicker but are having to be used due to shortages of experienced refs.

FOREST HILLS (5-0) @ MONROE (4-1) - 9/29/23

Usually this game is the last game of the season for all the marbles in the Rocky River 3A/2A but this year it's the first conference game of the season. Forest Hills owned this rivalry for many years and now Monroe has owned it for many years. Forest Hills was in a drought after legendary coach John Lowery retired and a not so great coach took his spot. (Terrible hire) Now with a new coach who knows his football Forest Hills is back to winning. Last year's game was a barn burner. FH jumped out to a two score lead but the game was lost in the end 21-19. Love to see another close one but Monroe looks really good. Forest Hills has the talent, speed and size but they've got to have a mistake free game to keep it close like last year. Go Jackets!!!!

(3) SWE 10-2 vs (6) Whiteville 10-2 UPDATES

Brawn meets brawn in Pinetops tonight. Paw vs paw. Canine vs big cat. The Wolfpack brings their stout defense to Cougar Stadium to see if it can slow down SWE's high scoring offense. But make no mistake about it, Whiteville's offense is no slouch either. They've actually put up more points than the Cougars. However, the strength of schedule favors SWE, partly because of the 2A/1A conference that Whiteville resides in. The two teams that SWE lost to are 20-2, 2A and 1A teams that are both still in the playoffs. The two teams that Whiteville lost to are 23-1, 2A and 1A teams that both still in the playoffs. One of their losses was to Clinton, who I'm sure we would lose to, and one of our losses was to Tarboro, who I think could defeat Whiteville.
I'm expecting defensive resistance like we haven't seen all year. Out of 12 games, they've only been scored on more than once 5 times. That's 7 games of 1 TD or less. Yikes! However.....I'm also expecting an offensive output that they haven't seen yet. I think we can utilize our speed and excellent blocking to get to the outside. I don't think there would be a point in running up the gut, other than to set them up for a sweep. Defensively, well, I'm just hoping that we play well enough to give us a chance. I have been critical of that side of the ball, but the defense has been lights out lately. I just need them to be...there...somewhere....on the field tonight. As usual, I will update, but I'm sure their poster will be doing the same. Safe travels to the Pack crew. I hope we are rude and ungracious hosts tonight!
