For those interested...here is a little Maiden history leading up to the start of the 2023 season with official practices starting on Monday.

A HUGE shoutout to @CHEERDUCK for supplying some long lost knowledge on Maiden's history to me this year. You Sir, are a legend. This is made further possible by Cheerduck's great fried, Roger Martin, who kept up with football knowledge in the Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, and Catawba county regions diligently so that this history will not be forgotten. Roger is no longer with us, but I'll keep his name attached to this knowledge as long as I'm alive to do so.

The 2023 season will mark 99 years since Maiden football was established in 1925, and will mark the 88th season of Maiden football. There were 11 years that Maiden didn't field a football team: 4 years during the Great Depression, 4 years during WWII, and 3 years during the Korean war.

In the 87 seasons we've had, Maiden has played in 903 games with a record of 599-281-23 (67.6%) - 102 of those being playoff games with a record of 57-45 (55.9%).

Maiden was known as the "Huskies" from 1925 to 1935, then became the Maiden "Red Raiders" from 1936 to 1949. In 1953 the new High School was built and Maiden fielded a football team for the first time in 3 years due to the Korean War, that Maiden team would be the "Blue Devils" under Head Coach Thomas McGraw and the winning tradition we know today was born.

Maiden has had 17 head coaches in it's history, the 4 longest tenured head coaches (coached more than 5 seasons) are:
--Tom Brown: 35 seasons (34 winning) from 1966-78 and 1986-2007 - 433 games - 328-99-6 (76.4%)
--Bill Barefoot: 9 seasons (7 winning) from 1955-59 and 1962-65 - 87 games - 56-27-4 (66.7%)
--Will Byrne: 7 seasons, entering his 8th (7 winning) from 2016-present - 84 games - 67-17-0 (79.8%)

Doubt. There's a whole lot of doubt laid on the Maiden team this year, inside and outside of Maiden from these forums, to the gossiping circles of town, on radio/talk shows, barber shops, pre-season rankings...I'll admit it's an odd place to be for us. Y'all enjoy that feeling while it lasts. Go ahead and paint that target on our back. We know the rest of the conference is boxing us into a corner...the problem with that game plan is...the Devil has you right where he wants you...one on one with no where to go...and week after week the Devil will collect what's due. Good Luck.

GDevil, let me say up front, I do this to pick your brain some because you would catch onto it if I tried to pass it off as something else.
What I'm about to ask you is meant respectfully as I know not to screw with Maiden people over football because they take it more seriously than any other contingent, and I do not want to make any of them mad, mainly because I like them, and too, I'm within arms reach if any of them were deeply insulted, and thirdly because our Wolves have not beaten them in the last seven years and they still have treated us kindly in spite of being our fathers for so long.

I do wonder though if you might be over-estimating the level of doubt, particularly from the outside. I've heard it talked about it here but no one has said Lincolnton or anyone else would beat the Devils in conference play. Any CVAC team going up against you must know they are playing the defending champs, and as long as they're the best team in the conference there will always be that target, but that's one of the many things making high school football fun.

Something else, isn't it possible to assume that fans and other sports sources are being disrespectful to one of the state's best programs when they talk about Maiden being down, when it might only be pre-season enthusiasm and wishful thinking. The reason I ask this is because of your admonition (above) seems to have a pretty good content of salt and vinegar in it, and I confess that is one of the things which I like about it.

Finally, as inconsiderate as that might sound, which it isn't meant to, but could it be that what talk you've heard has created a little doubt with you, too ? If there is so much negative talk as mentioned above I don't see how it could not. For some reason, though, it wouldn't surprise me if you said "NO ! it hasn't created doubt". If it has made you doubt, then I know it won't be long until you've put it into a proper perspective... Got a feeling you're a lot like the little guy from long ago who said "I don't allow no one to walk through my mind with dirty feet".

Right now, I'm afraid that when conference play is over you'll have the last laugh, again. If you're wondering if that indicates some doubt on my part concerning us, then yes, a little, and I always believe we can win, even when there's not a very good chance of it.

My friend, Forgive me. I was counting on your good nature. I do hope the bladder empties quick . Your friend L.:)
Not You…silly. 😉

Maiden’s record vs the Wolves. I’ve endured watching many a arse whipping watching those games…Newton too.

That’s why I always dread playing y’all. I don’t care how good we are…or how good y’all are….you just never know!

That’s what makes it so fun!

@Lincolnton let me say this lol ur not that bad for a wolf 🤣🤣. As for doubt I came up through maiden during the Tom brown years and he engrained in us, to never doubt the outcome of Friday nights. Doubt isn't allowed under coach brown and I'm sure that is an important part that is still part of the program today as his disciples have continued his work. I can honestly say I have never had a game at maiden I was part of, where I went into it thinking we were gonna lose. And I still believe that is a part of the fabric of maiden today.

AMD, Some coaches can shape and mold someone into the players they need. Coach Brown could do that and I would think Coach Byrne can too.

By the way, at this time I’m over at the stadium looking at the renovations to the field and track. It’s surely different.

Right now, it’s just getting dark and if I listen real close I can almost hear the Wolves calling. It’s as though they’re saying “AMD, AMD, bring it on, AMD.
Makes me want to howl, too.

Great post Grizz, lol, it sure seems you are very analytical with a lot of spare time. I too agree the Maiden faithful do not doubt. This team is young but talented.
Let the smoke roll
Sometimes too analytical....and as the old saying goes "you make time for the things that you want"

My friend. I am not easily offended...say what you need to without hesitation any time.

I don't believe I've over estimated the doubt outside of Maiden. Personal experiences talking to HS football fans in Denver, Newton, Hickory, Catawba, Sherrills Ford, Morganton, Lincolnton, Gastonia, Cherryville and even Huntersville. Non forum types.

And I don't believe I specified conf foes in particular...I was calling out to everyone. My assumption being more than CVAC people will view this thread and more than CVAC people have their opinions.

Yes, I agree the most likely source of the excitement and chatter is enthusiasm and dreams. We're on the hit list and "hot diggity dog this year we'll beat Maiden". I'll put it like this for you: if the enlisted ranks start rallying against the company commander, what is the appropriate response from the comander supposed to be? Hence my salt and vinegar.

I have zero doubt. The only thing I'm concerned about is if concessions will actually have food through the 4th quarter this year...and will they have all the windows open or just 3.

The last time we lost this many seniors, we won the conference 😜

Good luck to the Wolves and their young head coach.

Think about it that was some distance to travel to play high school football in 1925

I knew a man, Edgar "Cap" Love, born in 1905 who lived until around 2001, some of the Lincolnton people will recognize the name. He told the county historian that he was a water boy for Lincolnton in their first football game against Newton.

I asked the County historian how old Mr. Love was and who won, but this particular historian wasn't a football fan and didn't ask him. I meant to ask him myself after that but the last time I saw him was in the summer on a nasty hot day like today, sometime in the early 90's, and his car had broke down on South Laurel Street and we were trying to get his car fixed, and get his wife and him out of the heat, and didn't get to ask him.

This game might have been played before sports records were kept. The county historian telling me about this said Mr. Love told him the game was played on South Aspen Street. just below and across the street where the old Lincolnton High School (currently Lincoln Center of Gaston College) was (which was not there then, it was on East Congress Street, later, the Lincolnton Grammar School). Mr. Love was a Lincolnton High School Alumnus, class of 1922.

Good Luck.

KEEP YOUR HEAD ON A SWIVEL AND LET THE SMOKE ROOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!

@amaidendevil @Maiden Creek @Lincolnton @daagoob
I dunno. I kinda liked "Huskies".

Did Caleb Farley play at Maiden? I saw online his house in Mooresville exploded and killed his father. There is pictures online of the demolished house. If you look on google earth at 300 Barber Loop Rd you can see what this huge house looked like before it blew up. I'm guessing it was gas related??

Yes…Caleb played for Maiden, then Va. Tech and now plays for the Tennessee Titans.

It is heartbreaking for our Maiden community. Caleb’s father, Robert, played at Maiden as well. He was on the state championship ‘78 team and the ‘79 team that lost to Swain 7-6 on their way to the state championship.

Robert was a fine man that all of Maiden loved and respected. His smile and smooth voice would melt your heart. I’ve known him since I was in elementary school and all my brothers and sisters from that age group are hurting…as well as many more that Robert touched.

Tragic loss is an understatement for those of us who knew him. Lifting thoughts and prayers for the Farley family!❤️

Yes…gas leak of some kind appears to be what happened.

You guys have our sympathy. This certainly brings to light how temporary our lives are here.
